The taxonomic status of anoplocephaline cestodes of microtine rodents has been reviewed. Of the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, five species are considered valid: A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. montana Kirshenblat, 1941 ; A. arctica Rausch, 1952; A. bairdi Schad, 1954. Of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, six species are regarded as valid: P. omphalodes (Hermann, 1783); P. blanchardi (Moniez, 1891); P. infrequens (Douthitt, 1915); P. variabilis (Douthitt, 1915); P. lemmi Rausch, 1952; P. neofibrinus Rausch, 1952. Andrya caucasica Kirshenblat, 1938, and A. bialowizensis Soltys, 1949, are regarded as synonyms of A. macrocephala. Paranoplocephala brevis Kirshenblat, 1938, is regarded as a synonym of P. infrequens. Three species, A. macrocephala, P. omphalodes, and P. infrequens, are holarctic in distribution, occurring mainly in species of Microtus. The uniformity of microtine rodents as hosts for various helminths has been discussed. It is concluded that Dicrostonyx is the most isolated genus from this standpoint, having two nematodes which have not been recorded from members of other genera, and harboring few helminths in common with others. This agrees with Hinton's conclusions, based on morphological characters of Dicrostonyx. From the present concept of Pleistocene glaciations, it is concluded that P. omphalodes and P. infrequens reached the St. Matthew Islands, in Bering Sea, as parasites of a vole from which Microtus abbreviatus has evolved. It appears that this vole arrived on these islands before North America was invaded, in the late Pleistocene, by the palearctic M. oeconomus and Clethrionomys rutilus,/i>. The present known distribution of P. omphalodes in North America corresponds about to that of M. oeconomus on the continent.

An ecological and taxonomic study of the helminth parasites of voles (Microtus spp.) in the Jackson Hole region of Wyoming is reported. Nematospiroides microti n. sp. from Microtus montanus nanus and M. richardsoni macropus is described and figured. A cestode, Paranoplocephala infrequens, and a nematode, Syphacia obvelata, were generally distributed throughout the region in all habitats except the sage flats. A trematode, Quinqueserialis hassalli, was recovered only from voles collected near streams at low altitudes. This was presumably due to the localized distribution of the molluscan intermediate host. Four helminths, viz., Hymenolepis horrida, Heligmosomum costellatum, Nematospiroides microti and Trichuris opaca, were restricted in their distribution to the alpine and sub-alpine meadows. Of these parasites, H. horrida and H. costellatum are reported for the first time from North America. Most of the other host and locality records are new. Available data indicate that host specificity was not a factor in restricting the distribution of parasites. Although the greatest numbers of parasites, both qualitative and quantitative, occurred in habitats where host density was greatest, it seems unlikely that host density is the only factor involved.

The helminths of North American mouse-like rodents have received little study. Previous work has been based on low numbers of animals examined, and there has been little reference to the ecology involved. The purpose of this paper is to present data resulting from the examination of over 600 voles, with special reference to host-parasite relationships

Schizorchis caballeroi n. sp. has been described from the collared pika, Ochotona collaris (Nelson), from Alaska, and has been distinguished morphologically from its congeners, S. ochotonae Hansen, 1948, and S. altaica Gvozdev, 1951. Nine species of helminths have been described 10 dale from North American pikas, O. collaris and O. princeps (Richardson). These mammals are markedly allopatric and do not share any species of helminth. Nematodes of two genera, Eugenuris Shults and Labiostomum Akhtar, 1941, occur in O. collaris as weIl as in palearctic species of Ochotona. This, along with other pertinent information, is taken to suggest that O. collaris has invaded North American more recently than did O. princeps or its precursor.

In spite of the importance of the various species of shrews to the biotic community, several aspects of their ecology remain very incompletely known. The helminths parasitic in the more conspicuous small mammals in North America have been studied more or less completely, but those occurring in shrews have been largely disregarded. This situation is particularly inappropriate when one considers that shrews often constitute the most abundant mammalian group in a given area. We have attempted to secure an adequate amount of shrew helminth material for study, and it is the purpose of this paper to present observations resulting from this work.
