Maxwell Arboretum Anniversary Celebration

What a pleasure it is to have this opportunity to welcome you to campus today as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum. Henry Van Dyke once wrote that "He that planteth a tree ... provideth a kindness for many generations, and faces that he hath not seen shall bless him."

2006 East Campus Arbor Day Celebration

It cannot be lost on those of us present here today that Nebraska, the land of tall skies and wide prairies, where early settlers saw grass roll to the horizon broken only by the call of the lark, is the home of Arbor Day. Nebraska is, indeed, the tree planter state.

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory 50th Anniversary Celebration

Today we celebrate 50 years of work done here at the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory for Nebraska. Work that addresses issues of great importance here. Work that matters. As your land-grant university, it is a point of pride for us to celebrate work done for our state. We are at work for Nebraska. That's our heritage. It's why we're here.

2007 East Campus Arbor Day Celebration

As we celebrate Arbor Day, it seems fitting to begin with a J. Sterling Morton quote. "The cultivation of trees is the cultivation of the good, the beautiful, and the ennobling in man,” Morton once said, adding, "and for one, I wish to see it become universal."

UAAD Founders' Day

Because today is the birthday of Thomas Edison who was born in 1847 in Ohio, I suppose that you would expect me as today's speaker to have a special obligation to be inventive. Some of you probably know that for several years, Edison's birthday has been observed as National Science Youth Day, which sounds to me like a rather interesting invention itself. Youth is not a science and science is certainly not a youth, but I am perfectly willing to go along with the national celebration and wish a happy birthday to any science youth that I might happen to encounter. I would encourage you to do the same.

CASNR Salute to Graduates

We appreciate your being with us this afternoon as we celebrate the accomplishments of tomorrow's graduates from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. These students truly are a reason for celebration. Thank you for attending and congratulations to the class of 2008! This Salute to the Graduates ceremony has become a wonderful tradition in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
