Book Review of Portraits of the Bison: An Illustrated Guide to Bison Society by Wes Olson

Thundering herds of bison have become synonymous with the pre-European colonization of the Great Plains. As such, they have captured the imagination of countless people, including Wes Olson, a 20-year warden for Parks Canada. Throughout Portraits of the Bison, based on both existing literature and the author's extensive experience observing and managing these animals, Olson's bison fascination is not only obvious but infectious. A remarkably talented artist as well, Olson's line drawings appear throughout the book, accompanied by Johane Janelle's photographs.

Kowalewskiella totani n. sp. (Cestoda: Dilepididae) from Totanus flavipes

Totanus flavipes (Gmelin) 1789 (lesser yellowlegs) collected from the Cheyenne Bottoms Waterfowl Management area, Barton County, Kansas was parasitized by cestodes belonging to the poorly known genus Kowalewskiella Baczynska 1914 and constituting a species new to science. Kowalewskiella totani n. sp. is described from Totanus flavipes from Barton County, Kansas. It differs from K. cingulifera (Krabbe 1869) Sandeman 1959 in being much larger and having roughly twice as many testes as the latter species.

Improving the Effectiveness of Independent Practice with Corrective Feedback

In this action research study of my 8th grade Algebra class, I investigated the effects of teacher-to-student written corrective feedback on student performance and attitude toward mathematics. The corrective feedback was given on solutions for selected independent practice problems assigned as homework. Each problem being assessed was given a score based on a 3- point rubric and additional comments were written. I discovered that providing teacher-to-student written corrective feedback for independent practice problems was beneficial for both students and teachers. The feedback positively affected the attitudes of students and teacher toward independent practice work resulting in an improved quality of solutions produced by students. I plan to extend my research to explore ways to provide corrective feedback to students in all of my mathematics classes.
