Kinetic theory studies the macroscopic properties of large numbers of particles, starting from their (classical) equations of motion while the thermodynamics describes the equilibrium behavior of macroscopic objects in terms of concepts such as work, heat, and entropy. The phenomenological laws of thermodynamics tell us how these quantities are constrained as a system approaches its equilibrium. At the microscopic level, we know that these systems are composed of particles (atoms, particles), whose interactions and dynamics are reasonably well understood in terms of more fundamental theories. If these microscopic descriptions are complete, we should be able to account for the macroscopic behavior, i.e. derive the laws governing the macroscopic state functions in equilibrium. Kinetic theory attempts to achieve this objective. In particular, we shall try to answer the following questions [1]: How can we define equilibrium for a system of moving particles? Do all systems naturally evolve towards an equilibrium state? What is the time evolution of a system that is not quite in equilibrium?

The application of stochastic methods to the problem of particle and energy transport in turbulent plasmas is briefly reviewed. The "classical" Corrsin approximation is shown to be valid only in the limit of weak turbulence. The recently developed method of decorrelation trajectories is applicable over the whole range of turbulence intensities and yields the correct asymptotic behavior in the limit of very strong turbulence (subdiffusion). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Single agent chemotherapy of advanced lung cancer is still unsatisfactory. The most encouraging results have been obtained with high dose intermittent treatment with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate or adriamycin. Combination chemotherapy is probably more efficacious than single agent chemotherapy, especially in oat cell carcinoma. The best treatment schedules give a response rate of approximately 80%. The value of adjuvant chemotherapy is not yet established, but new controlled clinical trials are indicated considering the poor results achieved by surgery and radiotherapy.

All antiepileptic medications have potential side-effects. Some are rather specific like diplopia for carbamazepin or lamotrigin, whereas others are not, like fatigue or unsteadiness. Most are dose- related and can therefore be alleviated by dose reduction (e.g. somnolence or tremor) but a few are idiosyncratic (e.g. rash) and require cessation of the causative agent. Some can be detected and followed-up on a clinical basis but others necessitate specific examinations.

This paper provides an agent-based software exploration of the wellknown free market efficiency/equality trade-off. Our study simulates the interaction of agents producing, trading and consuming goods in the presence of different market structures, and looks at how efficient the producers/consumers mapping turn out to be as well as the resulting distribution of welfare among agents at the end of an arbitrarily large number of iterations. Two market mechanisms are compared: the competitive market (a double auction market in which agents outbid each other in order to buy and sell products) and the random one (in which products are allocated randomly). Our results confirm that the superior efficiency of the competitive market (an effective and never stopping producers/consumers mapping and a superior aggregative welfare) comes at a very high price in terms of inequality (above all when severe budget constraints are in play).

Rett syndrome is one of the most common causes of complex disability in girls. It is characterized by early neurological regression that severely affects motor, cognitive and communication skills, by autonomic dysfunction and often a seizure disorder. It is a monogenic X-linked dominant neurodevelopmental disorder related to mutation in MECP2, which encodes the methyl-CpG-binding protein MeCP2. There are several mouse models either based on conditional knocking out of the Mecp2 gene or on a truncating mutation. We discuss the clinical aspects with special emphasis on the behavioral phenotype and we review current perspectives in clinical management alongside with perspectives in altering gene expression.
