Producing turbulent speech sounds in the context of cleft palate.

Aims and Scope: No sound class requires so much basic knowledge of phonology, acoustics, aerodynamics, and speech production as obstruents (turbulent sounds) do. This book is intended to bridge a gap by introducing the reader to the world of obstruents from a multidisciplinary perspective. It starts with a review of typological processes, continues with various contributions to the phonetics-phonology interface, explains the realization of specific turbulent sounds in endangered languages, and finishes with surveys of obstruents from a sociophonetic, physical and pathological perspective.

An evaluation of the implications of the best interests of the child principle in the context of same-sex parenting in Ireland

Same-sex parenting is by no means a new phenomenon but the legal recognition and acceptance of gay and lesbian couples as parents is a relatively recent development in most countries. Traditionally, such recognition has been opposed on the basis of the claim that the best interests of children could not be met by gay and lesbian parents. This thesis examines the validity of this argument and it explores the true implications of the best interests principle in this context. The objective is to move away from subjective or moral conceptions of the best interests principle to an understanding which is informed by relevant sociological and psychological data and which is guided by reference to the rights contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Using this perspective, the thesis addresses the overarching issue of whether the law should offer legal recognition and protection to gay and lesbian families and the more discrete matter of how legal protection should be provided. It is argued that the best interests principle can be used to demand that same-sex parenting arrangements should be afforded legal recognition and protection. Suggestions are also presented as to the most appropriate manner of providing for this recognition. In this regard, guidance is drawn from the English and South African experience in this area. Overall, the objective is to assess the current laws from the perspective of the best interests principle so as to ensure that the law operates in a manner which adheres to the rights and interests of children.

The role of age and emotional valence in word recognition: an ex-Gaussian analysis

The aim of this work is to evaluate the roles of age and emotional valence in word recognition in terms of ex-Gaussian distribution components. In order to do that, a word recognition task was carried out with two age groups, in which emotional valence was manipulated. Older participants did not present a clear trend for reaction times. The younger participants showed significant statistical differences in negative words for target and distracting conditions. Addressing the ex-Gaussian tau parameter, often related to attentional demands in the literature, age-related differences in emotional valence seem not to have an effect for negative words. Focusing on emotional valence for each group, the younger participants only showed an effect on negative distracting words. The older participants showed an effect regarding negative and positive target words, and negative distracting words. This suggests that the attentional demand is higher for emotional words, in particular, for the older participants.

An investigation of the functional role of GRAB in the context of Rab3, Rab8 and Rab11

Rab GTPases are the largest family of the Ras superfamily and are key regulators of membrane trafficking within the cell. There are over 60 members of the Rab family which localise to specific membrane compartments and interact with effector proteins to regulate membrane trafficking processes, such as vesicle formation, vesicle trafficking within the cell and fusion with an acceptor compartment. Multiple effector proteins have been identified for many Rabs, some of which can interact with more than one Rab to link their function at a specific membrane location or to link them together in a Rab activation cascade. Rabin8 is one such protein which is an effector for Rab11a and a Guanine nucleotide Exchange Factor (GEF) for Rab8a. Rabin8 participates in a conserved Rab activation cascade which is critical in the formation of primary cilia. Data presented in this thesis has shown that GRAB interacts with Rab3a, Rab8a, Rab11a and Rab11b in a nucleotide dependent manner. Furthermore, the minimal interacting regionbetween these proteins has been investigated. The functional outcome of GRAB knockdown has also been examined and data in this thesis highlights the phenotypic outcome.
