The phosphorescence excitation spectra of two thiones, 4-H-1-xanthione (XT) and 4-H-1-pyrane-4-thione (PT), cooled in a supersonic jet were investigated. The vibronic lineshape of the T1z origin of PT measured by cavity ring-down spectroscopy is considered and the excited state rotational constants are calculated. For XT the 3A2(nπ* ) → X1A1 phosphorescence excitation spectrum was investigated in the region 14900-17600 cm-1. The structure observed is shown to be due to the T1← S0 absorption and an assignment in terms of the vibronic structure of the band is proposed. A previous assignment of the S1 ← S0 origin is considered and the transition involved is shown to be most probably due to the absorption of a vibronic tiplet state T1z,v7. An alternative but tentative assignment of the S1,0 ←S0,0 transition is suggested. In the case of PT the phosphorescence excitation spectrum was investigated in the region of the 1A2(ππ*) ← X1A1 absorption band between 27300 and 28800 cm-1. The spectrum exhibits complex features which are typical for the strong vibronic coupling case of two adjacent electronic states. The observed intermediate level structure was attributed to the coupling with a lower lying dark electronic state 1B1(nπ*2), whose origin was estimated to be ~ 825 - 1025 cm-1 below the origin of 1A2(ππ*)0. Consequences of the vibronic coupling on the decay dynamics of 1A2(ππ*) as well as tentative assignments of vibronic transitions 1A2(ππ*)v ← X1A1 are also discussed. In the T1z ← S0 cavity ring-down absorption spectrum of PT, the vibronic lineshape of the T1z origin is analysed. As the T1z line is separated from the T1x,1y lines by a large zero-field splitting it is possible to use an Asyrot-like program to calculate the vibrational-rotational parameters determining the lineshape. It is shown that PT is non-planar in the first excited triplet state and the lineshape is composed of a mixture of A-type and C-type bandshapes. The non-planarity of PT is discussed.

This thesis describes a systematic investigation of the mechanistic and synthetic aspects of intramolecular reactions of a series of α-diazo-β-oxo sulfone derivatives using copper and, to a lesser extent, rhodium catalysts. The key reaction pathways explored were C–H insertion and cyclopropanation, with hydride transfer competing in certain instances. Significantly, up to 98% ee has been achieved in the C–H insertion processes using copper-NaBARF-bisoxazoline catalysts, with the presence of the additive NaBARF critical to the efficiency of the transformations. This novel synthetic methodology provides access to a diverse range of enantioenriched heterocyclic compounds including thiopyrans, sulfolanes, β- and γ-lactams, in addition to carbocycles such as fused cyclopropanes. The synthesis of the α-diazosulfones required for subsequent investigations is initially described. Of the twenty seven diazo sulfones described, nineteen are novel and are fully characterised in this work. The discussion is subsequently focused on a study of the copper and rhodium catalysed reactions of the α-diazosulfones with Chapter Four concentrated on highly enantioselective C–H insertion to form thiopyrans and sufolanes, Chapter Five focused on C–H insertion to form fused sulfolanes, Chapter Six focused on C–H insertion in sulfonyl α-diazoamides where both lactam formation and / or thiopyran / sulfolane formation can result from competing C–H insertion pathways, while Chapter Seven focuses on cyclopropanation to yield fused cyclopropane derviatives. One of the key outcomes of this work is an insight into the steric and / or electronic factors on both the substrate and the catalyst which control regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivity patterns in these synthetically powerful transformations. Full experimental details for the synthesis and spectral characterisation of the compounds are included at the end of each Chapter, with details of chiral stationary phase HPLC analysis and assignment of absolute stereochemistry included in the appendix.

We report the comparative structural-vibrational study of nanostructures of nanourchins, nanotubes, and nanorods of vanadium oxide. The tube walls comprise layers of vanadium oxide with the organic surfactant intercalated between atomic layers. Both Raman scattering and infrared spectroscopies showed that the structure of nanourchins, nanotubes, and nanorods of vanadium oxide nanocomposite are strongly dependent on the valency of the vanadium, its associated interactions with the organic surfactant template, and on the packing mechanism and arrangement of the surfactant between vanadate layers. Accurate assignment of the vibrational modes to the V-O coordinations has allowed their comparative classification and relation to atomic layer structure. Although all structures are formed from the same precursor, differences in vanadate conformations due to the hydrothermal treatment and surfactant type result in variable degrees of crystalline order in the final nanostructure. The nanotube-containing nanourchins contain vanadate layers in the nanotubes that are in a distorted γ- V5+ conformation, whereas the the nanorods, by comparison, show evidence for V5+ and V4+ species-containing ordered VOx lamina.

Polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were used here in three studies, one on Salmo salar and two on S. trutta. In the case of S. salar, the survival of native fish and non-natives from a nearby catchment, and their hybrids, were compared in a freshwater common garden experiment and subsequently in ocean ranching, with parental assignment utilising microsatellites. Overall survival of non-natives was 35% of natives. This differential survival was mainly in the oceanic phase. These results imply a genetic basis and suggest local adaptation can occur in salmonids across relatively small geographic distances which may have important implications for the management of salmon populations. In the first case study with S trutta, the species was investigated throughout its spread as an invasive in Newfoundland, eastern Canada. Genetic investigation confirmed historical records that the majority of introductions were from a Scottish hatchery and provided a clear example of the structure of two expanding waves of spread along coasts, probably by natural straying of anadromous individuals, to the north and south of the point of human introduction. This study showed a clearer example of the genetic anatomy of an invasion than in previous studies with brown trout, and may have implications for the management of invasive species in general. Finally, the genetics of anadromous S. trutta from the Waterville catchment in south western Ireland were studied. Two significantly different population groupings, from tributaries in geographically distinct locations entering the largest lake in the catchment, were identified. These results were then used to assign very large rod caught sea trout individuals (so called “specimen” sea trout) back to region of origin, in a Genetic Stock Identification exercise. This suggested that the majority of these large sea trout originated from one of the two tributary groups. These results are relevant for the understanding of sea trout population dynamics and for the future management of this and other sea trout producing catchments. This thesis has demonstrated new insights into the population structuring of salmonids both between and within catchments. While these chapters look at the existence and scale of genetic variation from different angles, it might be concluded that the overarching message from this thesis should be to highlight the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in salmonid populations as vital for their long-term productivity and resilience.
