We have investigated optical and transport properties of the molecular structure 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-phenylethynyl-cyclopenta-2,4-dienol experimentally and theoretically. The optical spectrum was calculated using Hartree-Fock-intermediate neglect of differential overlap-configuration interaction model. The experimental photoluminescence spectrum showed a peak around 470nm which was very well described by the modeling. Electronic transport measurements showed a diode-like effect with a strong current rectification. A phenomenological microscopic model based on non-equilibrium Green's function technique was proposed and a very good description electronic transport was obtained. The photoluminescence from individual quantum wells of artificially disordered weakly coupled multi-layers embedded in wide AlGaAs parabolic wells was investigated in a strong magnetic field. We show that the response of the individual wells is very different from the average response of the multi-layers studied by transport measurements and that photoluminescence represents a local probe of the quantum Hall state formed in three-dimensional electron system. The observed magnetic field induced variations of the in-layer electron density demonstrate the formation of a new phase in the quasi-three-dimensional electron system. The sudden change in the local electron density found at the Landau filling factor nu = 1 by both the magneto-transport and the magneto-photoluminescence measurements was assigned to the quantum phase transition. The influence of layer-by-layer films of polyaniline and Ni-tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (PANI/Ni-TS-Pc) on the electrical performance of polymeric light-emitting diodes (PLED) made from (poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]) (MEH-PPV) is investigated by using current versus voltage measurements and impedance spectroscopy. The PLED is composed by a thin layer of MEH-PPV sandwiched between indium tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum electrodes, resulting in the device structure ITO/(PANI/Ni-TS-Pc)(n)/MEH-PPV/Al, where n stands for the number of PANI/Ni-TS-Pc bilayers. The deposition of PANI/Ni-TS-Pc leads to a decrease in the driving voltage of the PLEDs, which reaches a minimum when n = 5 bilayers. In addition, impedance spectroscopy data reveal that the PLED impedance decreases as more PANI/Ni-TS-Pc bilayers are deposited. The PLED structure is further described by an equivalent circuit composed by two R-C combinations, one for the bulk and other for the interface components, in series with a resistance originated in the ITO contact. From the impedance curves, the values for each circuit element is determined and it is found that both, bulk and interface resistances are decreased upon PANI/Ni-TS-Pc deposition. The results indicate that PANI/NiTS-Pc films reduce the contact resistance at ITO/MEH-PPV interface, and for that reason improve the hole-injection within the PLED structure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Estuarine hydrodynamics is a key factor in the definition of the filtering capacity of an estuary and results from the interaction of the processes that control the inlet morphodynamics and those that are acting in the mixing of the water in the estuary. The hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport in the Cambori estuary were assessed by two field campaigns conducted in 1998 that covered both neap and spring tide conditions. The period measured represents the estuarine hydrodynamics and sediment transport prior to the construction of the jetty in 2003 and provides important background information for the Cambori estuary. Each field campaign covered two complete tidal cycles with hourly measurements of currents, salinity, suspended sediment concentration and water level. Results show that the Cambori estuary is partially mixed with the vertical structure varying as a function of the tidal range and tidal phase. The dynamic estuarine structure can be balanced between the stabilizing effects generated by the vertical density gradient, which produces buoyancy and stratification flows, and the turbulent effects generated by the vertical velocity gradient that generates vertical mixing. The main sediment source for the water column are the bottom sediments, periodically resuspended by the tidal currents. The advective salt and suspended sediment transport was different between neap and spring tides, being more complex at spring tide. The river discharge term was important under both tidal conditions. The tidal correlation term was also important, being dominant in the suspended sediment transport during the spring tide. The gravitational circulation and Stokes drift played a secondary role in the estuarine transport processes.

In this analysis a 3.5 years data set of aerosol and precipitation chemistry, obtained in a remote site in Central Amazonia (Balbina, (1A degrees 55' S, 59A degrees 29' W, 174 m a.s.l.), about 200 km north of Manaus) is discussed. Aerosols were sampled using stacked filter units (SFU), which separate fine (d < 2.5 mu m) and coarse mode (2.5 mu m < d < 10.0 mu m) aerosol particles. Filters were analyzed for particulate mass (PM), Equivalent Black Carbon (BCE) and elemental composition by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE). Rainwater samples were collected using a wet-only sampler and samples were analyzed for pH and ionic composition, which was determined using ionic chromatography (IC). Natural sources dominated the aerosol mass during the wet season, when it was predominantly of natural biogenic origin mostly in the coarse mode, which comprised up to 81% of PM10. Biogenic aerosol from both primary emissions and secondary organic aerosol dominates the fine mode in the wet season, with very low concentrations (average 2.2 mu g m(-3)). Soil dust was responsible for a minor fraction of the aerosol mass (less than 17%). Sudden increases in the concentration of elements as Al, Ti and Fe were also observed, both in fine and coarse mode (mostly during the April-may months), which we attribute to episodes of Saharan dust transport. During the dry periods, a significant contribution to the fine aerosols loading was observed, due to the large-scale transport of smoke from biomass burning in other portions of the Amazon basin. This contribution is associated with the enhancement of the concentration of S, K, Zn and BCE. Chlorine, which is commonly associated to sea salt and also to biomass burning emissions, presented higher concentration not only during the dry season but also for the April-June months, due to the establishment of more favorable meteorological conditions to the transport of Atlantic air masses to Central Amazonia. The chemical composition of rainwater was similar to those ones observed in other remote sites in tropical forests. The volume-weighted mean (VWM) pH was 4.90. The most important contribution to acidity was from weak organic acids. The organic acidity was predominantly associated with the presence of acetic acid instead of formic acid, which is more often observed in pristine tropical areas. Wet deposition rates for major species did not differ significantly between dry and wet season, except for NH4+, citrate and acetate, which had smaller deposition rates during dry season. While biomass burning emissions were clearly identified in the aerosol component, it did not present a clear signature in rainwater. The biogenic component and the long-range transport of sea salt were observed both in aerosols and rainwater composition. The results shown here indicate that in Central Amazonia it is still possible to observe quite pristine atmospheric conditions, relatively free of anthropogenic influences.
