Cutaneous Fibroma in a Captive Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

An adult female common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) had a mass on the plantar surface of the right forelimb that was removed surgically. Microscopical examination revealed many spindle cells with mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and a surrounding collagenous stroma. There were no mitoses. Immunohistochemistry showed that the spindle cells expressed vimentin, but not desmin. A diagnosis of cutaneous fibroma was made. Tumours are reported uncommonly in chelonian species. Cutaneous fibroma has been diagnosed in an alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), but not previously in a common snapping turtle. Crown Copyright (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Management of desmoid-type fibromatosis involving peripheral nerves

Desmoid-type fibromatosis is an uncommon and aggressive neoplasia, associated with a high rate of recurrence. It is characterized by an infiltrative but benign fibroblastic proliferation occurring within the deep soft tissues. There is no consensus about the treatment of those tumors. We present a surgical series of four cases, involving the brachial plexus (two cases), the median nerve and the medial brachial cutaneous nerve. Except for the last case, they were submitted to multiple surgical procedures and showed repeated recurrences. The diagnosis, the different ways of treatment and the prognosis of these tumoral lesions are discussed. Our results support the indication of radical surgery followed by radiotherapy as probably one of the best ways to treat those controversial lesions.

Central Granular Cell Odontogenic Tumor of the Maxilla

The central granular cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm composed of varying amounts of large eosinophilic granular cells and apparently inactive odontogenic epithelium. It tends to occur as a small asymptomatic swelling in the posterior region of the mandible with nonaggressive appearance. We report an unusual case of CGCOT in the maxillary region with clinical features of malignancy. The patient underwent surgical treatment, and the 2-year follow-up revealed no signs of recurrence. Central granular cell odontogenic tumor is a very rare condition with few cases reported, especially in the maxillary region. This case highlights the possibility of aggressive behavior by these lesions.

Case for diagnosis

Infantile digital fibromatosis or Reye's tumor is a benign fibroproliferative tumor, the etiopathogenesis of which has yet to be fully clarified. It typically presents at birth or in the first year of life and is characterized by a firm, flesh colored or erythematous nodule or nodules located on the digits. These lesions tend to regress spontaneously.
