We investigate the occurrence of the optical Kerr effect and two-photon absorption when an oil-based magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles colloidal suspension is illuminated with high intensity femtosecond laser pulses. The frequency of the pulses is controlled and the Z-scan technique is employed in our measurements of the nonlinear optical Kerr coefficient (n(2)) and two-photon absorption coefficient (beta). From these values it was possible to calculate the real and imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibility. We observed that increasing the pulse frequency, additional physical processes take place, increasing artificially the absolute values of n(2) and beta. The experimental conditions are discussed to assure the obtention of reliable values of these nonlinear optical parameters, which may be useful in all-optical switching and optical power limiting applications. Several studies on polythiophene gas sensors, based mainly on electrochemical and gravimetric principles can be found in the literature. However, other principles of gas detection, such as optical and thermal, are still little studied. Optical sensing is suitable for remote detection and offers great versatility at low cost. Here,we report on the use of thin films of seven polythiophene derivatives as active layer in optical sensors for the detection of six volatile organic compounds (n-hexane, toluene, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, dichloromethane and methanol) and water vapor, in concentration range of 500-30,000 ppm. The results showed that it is possible to use different polythiophene derivatives to differentiate VOCs by optical sensing. Differentiation can be performed based on the presence or not of response to an analyte and the sensitivity value of the sensors for the analytes. Another important feature is the lack of the effect of humidity on the response of most films, which could be a major drawback in the application of these sensors. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This paper reports the synthesis of Au nanoparticles by 30-fs pulses irradiation of a sample containing HAuCl4 and chitosan, a biopolymer used as reducing agent and stabilizer. We observed that it is a multi-photon induced process, with a threshold irradiance of 3.8 x 10(11) W/cm(2) at 790 nm. By transmission electron microscopy we observed nanoparticles from 8 to 50 nm with distinct shapes. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that the reduction of gold and consequent production of nanoparticles is related to the fs-pulse induced oxidation of hydroxyl to carbonyl groups in chitosan. Aims To evaluate the ability of multifocal transient pattern electroretinography (mfPERG) to detect neural loss and assess the relationship between mfPERG and visual-field (VF) loss in eyes with chiasmal compression. Methods 23 eyes from 23 patients with temporal VF defects and band atrophy of the optic nerve and 21 controls underwent standard automated perimetry and mfPERG using a stimulus pattern of 19 rectangles, each consisting of 12 squares. The response was determined for the central rectangle, for the nasal and temporal hemifields (eight rectangles each) and for each quadrant (three rectangles) in both patients and controls. Comparisons were made using variance analysis. Correlations between VF and mfPERG measurements were verified by linear regression analysis. Results Mean +/- SD mfPERG amplitudes from the temporal hemifield (0.50 +/- 0.17 and 0.62 +/- 0.32) and temporal quadrants (superior 0.42 +/- 0.21 and 0.52 +/- 0.35, inferior 0.51 +/- 0.23 and 0.74 +/- 0.40) were significantly lower in eyes with band atrophy than in controls (0.78 +/- 0.24, 0.89 +/- 0.28, 0.73 +/- 60.26, 0.96 +/- 0.36, 0.79 +/- 0.26 and 0.91 +/- 0.31, respectively). No significant difference was observed in nasal hemifield measurements. Significant correlations (0.36-0.73) were found between VF relative sensitivity and mfPERG amplitude in different VF sectors. Conclusions mfPERG amplitude measurements clearly differentiate eyes with temporal VF defect from controls. The good correlation between mfPERG amplitudes and the severity of VF defect suggests that mfPERG may be used as an indicator of ganglion cell dysfunction.
