This paper presents a comprehensive review on the interaction between hydrodynamic processes, beach morphology and sedimentology at large scale coastal behaviour along the coastline of Santa Catarina, between Laguna and Sao Francisco Island, a microtidal east coast swell environment with headland and bay geomorphologies. The parabolic bay shape equation has proven to be a convenient and practical tool for studying the stability of the headland-bay beaches, tombolos, and salients in Santa Catarina. The beaches exhibit different patterns of sediment removal as a function of the degree of beach curvature. In highly curved beaches, there is a well-developed shadow zone and a range of morphodynamic conditions, from a sheltered low-energy beach adjacent to the downdrift headland to a high-energy exposed beach on the straight end of the headland-bay beach. The less curved beaches instead, tend to show more uniform behaviour since they are directly exposed to incident waves. There is no obvious relationship between average wave height and mean grain size, showing the importance of sediment source to characterize the sedimentary distribution patterns in the study area. The analysis of beaches showed that beach morphodynamics and sequence profiles for a bay-headland coast in a microtidal east coast environment is a function of geological inheritance (e.g., distance between headlands and orientation, nearshore and inner shelf morphology, coastal plain morphology, and sediment source), and hydrodynamic factors (wave conditions, oceanic wave exposure and relative tidal range). We aimed to develop site-specific sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for two estuarine and port zones in Southeastern Brazil (Santos Estuarine System and Paranagua Estuarine System) and three in Southern Spain (Ria of Huelva, Bay of Cadiz, and Bay of Algeciras), and compare these values against national and traditionally used international benchmark values. Site-specific SQGs were derived based on sediment physical-chemical, toxicological, and benthic community data integrated through multivariate analysis. This technique allowed the identification of chemicals of concern and the establishment of effects range correlatively to individual concentrations of contaminants for each site of study. The results revealed that sediments from Santos channel, as well as inner portions of the SES, are considered highly polluted (exceeding SQGs-high) by metals, PAHs and PCBs. High pollution by PAHs and some metals was found in Sao Vicente channel. In PES, sediments from inner portions (proximities of the Ponta do Mix port`s terminal and the Port of Paranagua) are highly polluted by metals and PAHs, including one zone inside the limits of an environmental protection area. In Gulf of Cadiz, SQGs exceedences were found in Ria of Huelva (all analysed metals and PAHs), in the surroundings of the Port of CAdiz (Bay of CAdiz) (metals), and in Bay of Algeciras (Ni and PAHs). The site-specific SQGs derived in this study are more restricted than national SQGs applied in Brazil and Spain, as well as international guidelines. This finding confirms the importance of the development of site-specific SQGs to support the characterisation of sediments and dredged material. The use of the same methodology to derive SQGs in Brazilian and Spanish port zones confirmed the applicability of this technique with an international scope and provided a harmonised methodology for site-specific SQGs derivation. Phenomena as reconnection scenarios, periodic-orbit collisions, and primary shearless tori have been recognized as features of nontwist maps. Recently, these phenomena and secondary shearless tori were analytically predicted for generic maps in the neighborhood of the tripling bifurcation of an elliptic fixed point. In this paper, we apply a numerical procedure to find internal rotation number profiles that highlight the creation of periodic orbits within islands of stability by a saddle-center bifurcation that emerges out a secondary shearless torus. In addition to the analytical predictions, our numerical procedure applied to the twist and nontwist standard maps reveals that the atypical secondary shearless torus occurs not only near a tripling bifurcation of the fixed point but also near a quadrupling bifurcation. The Akodontini is the second most speciose tribe of sigmodontine rodents, one of the most diverse groups of neotropical mammals. Molecular phylogenetic analyses are discordant regarding the interrelationships of genera, with low support for some clades. However, two clades are concordant, one (clade A) with Akodon sensu strictu (excluding Akodon serrensis), "Akodon" serrensis, Bibimys, Deltamys, Juscelinomys, Necromys, Oxymycterus, Podoxymys, Thalpomys and Thaptomys, and another (clade B) with Blarinomys, Brucepattersonius, Kunsia, Lenoxus and Scapteromys. Here, we present chromosome painting using Akodon paranaensis (APA) Y paint, after suppression of simple repetitive sequences, on ten Akodontini genera. Partial Y chromosome homology, in addition to the homology already reported on the Akodon genus, was detected on the Y chromosomes of "A." serrensis, Thaptomys, Deltamys, Necromys and Thalpomys and on Y and X chromosomes in Oxymycterus. In Blarinomys, Brucepattersonius, Scapteromys and Kunsia, no APA Y signal was observed using different hybridization conditions; APA X paint gave positive signals only on the X chromosome in all genera. The Y chromosome homology was variable in size and positioning among the species studied as follow: (1) whole acrocentric Y chromosome in Akodon and "A." serrensis, (2) Yp and pericentromeric region in submetacentric Y of Necromys and Thaptomys, (3) pericentromeric region in acrocentric Y of Deltamys, (4) distal Yq in the acrocentric Y chromosome of Thalpomys and (5) proximal Yq in the acrocentric Y and Xp in the basal clade A genus Oxymycterus. The results suggest that the homology involves pairing (pseudoautosomal) and additional regions that have undergone rearrangement during divergence. The widespread Y homology represents a phylogenetic signal in Akodontini that provides additional evidence supporting the monophyly of clade A. The findings also raise questions about the evolution of the pseudoautosomal region observed in Oxymycterus. The Y chromosomes of these closely related species seem to have undergone dynamic rearrangements, including restructuring and reduction of homologous segments. Furthermore, the changes observed may indicate progressive attrition of the Y chromosome in more distantly related species.

The results of a pedagogical strategy implemented at the University of Sao Paulo at Sao Carlos are presented and discussed. The initiative was conducted in a transportation course offered to Civil Engineering students. The approach is a combination of problem-based learning and project-based learning (PBL) and blended-learning (B-learning). Starting in 2006, a different problem was introduced every year. From 2009 on, however, the problem-based learning concept was expanded to project-based learning. The performance of the students was analyzed using the following elements: (1) grades in course activities; (2) answers from a questionnaire designed for course evaluation; and (3) cognitive maps made to assess the effects of PBL through the comparison of the responses provided by the students involved and those not involved in the experiment. The results showed positive aspects of the method, such as a strong involvement of several students with the subject. A gradual increase in the average scores obtained by the students in the project activities (from 6.77 in 2006 to 8.24 in 2009) was concomitant with a better evaluation of these activities and of the course as a whole (90 and 97% of options "Good" or "Very good" in 2009, respectively). A growing interest in the field of transportation engineering as an alternative for further studies was also noticed. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)EI.1943-5541.0000115. Among the soils in the Mato Grosso do Sul, stand out in the Pantanal biome, the Spodosols. Despite being recorded in considerable extensions, few studies aiming to characterize and classify these soils were performed. The purpose of this study was to characterize and classify soils in three areas of two physiographic types in the Taquari river basin: bay and flooded fields. Two trenches were opened in the bay area (P1 and P2) and two in the flooded field (P3 and P4). The third area (saline) with high sodium levels was sampled for further studies. In the soils in both areas the sand fraction was predominant and the texture from sand to sandy loam, with the main constituent quartz. In the bay area, the soil organic carbon in the surface layer (P1) was (OC) > 80 g kg(-1), being diagnosed as Histic epipedon. In the other profiles the surface horizons had low OC levels which, associated with other properties, classified them as Ochric epipedons. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2), the pH ranged from 5.0 to 7.5, associated with dominance of Ca2+ and Mg2+, with base saturation above 50 % in some horizons. In the flooded fields (P3 and P4) the soil pH ranged from 4.9 to 5.9, H+ contents were high in the surface horizons (0.8-10.5 cmol(c) kg(-1)), Ca2+ and Mg-2 contents ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 cmol(c) kg(-1) and base saturation was < 50 %. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2) iron was accumulated (extracted by dithionite - Fed) and OC in the spodic horizon; in the P3 and P4 soils only Fed was accumulated (in the subsurface layers). According to the criteria adopted by the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) at the subgroup level, the soils were classified as: P1: Organic Hydromorphic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P2: Typical Orthic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P3: Typical Hydromorphic Ferroluvic Spodosol. P4: Arenic Orthic Ferroluvic Spodosol.
