This work investigates pure ionic liquids (ILs) derived from an imidazolium ring with different carbonic chains and halides or bis(trifluoromethanesulfonilimide) (TFSI-) as anions, using X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at different energies (N, S, O, F, and Cl edges) to probe the interionic interactions. XANES data show that the interaction with the anion is weaker when the cation is an imidazolium than when the salt is formed by smaller cations, as lithium, independently of the length of the carbonic chain attached to the imidazolium cation. The results also show that, for all studied as, it is not observed any influence of the anion on the XANES spectra of the cation, nor the opposite. 1-Methylimidazolium with Cl-, a small and strongly coordinating anion, presents in the N K XANES spectrum a splitting of the band corresponding to nitrogen in the imidazolic ring, indicating two different chemical environments. For this cation with TFSI-, on the contrary, this splitting was not observed, showing that the anion has a weaker interaction with the imidazolic ring, even without a lateral carbonic chain.

Local structure around Fe ions on Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 ceramics was probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy in order to settle the controversies about its structure. It is observed that the shell structure around Fe atoms exhibits a monoclinic local symmetry at 130 and 230 K, tetragonal local symmetry at room temperature, and cubic local symmetry at 410 K. Independently of the coordination, temperature, or symmetry, Fe-O mean bond-length does not vary significantly. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4709490]

This work presents a study on the effects of the particle size, material concentration and radiation energy on the X-ray absorption. CuO nanoparticles and microparticles were incorporated separately into a polymeric resin in concentrations of 5%, 10% and 30% relative to the resin mass. X-ray absorption by these materials was analyzed with a CdTe detector. The X-ray absorption is higher for the nanostructured material compared to the microstructured one for low energy X-ray beams for all CuO concentrations. (c) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The first stage of the photosynthetic process is the extraordinary efficiency of sunlight absorption in the visible region [1]. This region corresponds to the maximum of the spectral radiance of the solar emission. The efficient absorption of visible light is one of the most important characteristics of photosynthetic pigments. In chlorophylls, for example, the absorptions are seen as a strong absorption in the region 400-450 nm in connection with other absorptions with small intensities in the region of 500-600 nm. This work aims at understanding the essential features of the absorption spectrum of photosynthetic pigments, in line with several theoretical studies in the literature [2, 3]. The absorption spectra were calculated for H2-Porphyrin, Mg-Porphyrin, and Zn-Porphyrin, and for H2-Phthalocyanine and Mg-Phthalocyanine with and without the four peripheral eugenol substituents. The geometries were optimized using the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) theoretical model. For the calculation of the absorption spectra different TD-DFT calculations were performed (B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, O3LYP, M06-2X and BP86) along with CIS (D). For the spectra the basis set 6-311++G (d, p) was used for porphyrins and 6-31+G (d) was used for the other systems. At this stage the solvent effects were considered using the simplified continuum model (PCM). First a comparison between the results using the different methods was made. For the porphyrins the best results compared to experiment (both in position and intensities) are obtained with M06-2X and CIS (D). We also analyze the compatibility of the four-orbital model of Gouterman [4] that states that transitions could be well described by the HOMO-1, HOMO, LUMO, and LUMO+1 molecular orbitals. Our results for H2-Porphyrin shows an agreement with other theoretical results and experimental data [5]. For the phthalocyanines (including the four peripheral eugenol substituents) the results are also in good agreement compared with the experimental results given in ref [6]. Finally, the results show that the inclusion of solvent eÆects gives corrections for the spectral shift in the correct direction but numerically small. References [1] R.E. In the last years, extensive research has been devoted to develop novel materials and structures with high electrochemical performance for intermediate-temperatures solid-oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) electrodes. In recent works, we have investigated the structural and electrochemical properties of La0:6Sr0:4CoO3 (LSCO) and La0:6Sr0:4Co1¡yFeyO3 (LSCFO) nanostructured cathodes, finding that they exhibit excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction [1,2]. These materials were prepared by a pore-wetting technique using polycarbonate porous membranes as templates. Two average pore sizes were used: 200 nm and 800 nm. Our scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) study showed that the lower pore size yielded nanorods, while nanotubes were obtained with the bigger pore size. All the samples were calcined at 1000oC in order to produce materials with the desired perovskite-type crystal structure. In this work, we analyze the oxidation states of Co and Fe and the local atomic order of LSCO and LSCFO nanotubes and nanowires for various compositions. For this pur- pose we performed XANES and EXAFS studies on both Co and Fe K edges. These measurements were carried out at the D08B-XAFS2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). XANES spectroscopy showed that Co and Fe only change slightly their oxidation state upon Fe addition. Surprisingly, XANES results indicated that the content of oxygen vacancies is low, even though it is well-known that these materials are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. EXAFS results were consistent with those expected according to the rhombohedral crystal structure determined in previous X-ray powder dffraction investigations. [1] M.G. Bellino et al, J. Am. Chem. This paper describes the effect of using different titanium precursors on the synthesis and physical properties of SrTiO3 powders obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction measurements, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were carried out to investigate the structural and optical properties of the SrTiO3 spherical and cubelike-shaped particles. The appropriate choice of the titanium precursor allowed the control of morphological and photoluminescence (PL) properties of SrTiO3 compound. The PL emission was more intense in SrTiO3 samples composed of spherelike particles. This behavior was attributed to the existence of a lower amount of defects due to the uniformity of the spherical particles.

In this work, barium zirconate (BaZrO3) ceramics synthesized by solid state reaction method and sintered at 1670 degrees C for 4 h were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement data and FT-IR spectra which confirmed that BaZrO3 ceramics have a perovskite-type cubic structure. Optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. UV-vis absorption spectra suggested an indirect allowed transition with the existence of intermediary energy levels within the band gap. Intense visible green PL emission was observed in BaZrO3 ceramics upon excitation with a 350 nm wavelength. This behavior is due to a majority of deep defects within the band gap caused by symmetry breaking in octahedral [ZrO6] clusters in the lattice. The microwave dielectric constant and quality factor were measured using the method proposed by Hakki-Coleman. The dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) was investigated experimentally and numerically using a monopole antenna through an infinite ground plane and Ansoft's high frequency structure simulator software, respectively. The required resonance frequency and bandwidth of DRA were investigated by adjusting the dimension of the same material. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. We report herein for the first time a facile synthesis method to obtain SrTi1-xFexO3 nanocubes by means by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) method at 140 degrees C. The effect of iron addition on the structural and morphological properties of SrTiO3 was investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements show that all STFO samples present a cubic perovskite structure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Fe absorption K-edge measurements revealed that iron ions are in a mixed Fe2+/Fe3+ oxidation state and preferentially occupy the Ti4+-site. UV-visible spectra reveal a reduction in the optical gap (E-gap) of STFO samples as the amount of iron is increased. An analysis of the data obtained by field emission scanning electron microscopy points out that the nanoparticles present a cubic morphology independently of iron content. According to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy results, these nanocubes are formed by a self-assembly process of small primary nanocrystals.

In this paper, we report our initial research to obtain hexagonal rod-like elongated silver tungstate (alpha-Ag2WO4) microcrystals by different methods [sonochemistry (SC), coprecipitation (CP), and conventional hydrothermal (CH)] and to study their cluster coordination and optical properties. These microcrystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinements, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies. The shape and average size of these alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals were observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The optical properties of these microcrystals were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals have an orthorhombic structure. FT-IR spectra exhibited four IR-active modes in a range from 250 to 1000 cm(-1). XANES spectra at the W L-3-edge showed distorted octahedral [WO6] clusters in the lattice, while EXAFS analyses confirmed that W atoms are coordinated by six O atoms. FE-SEM images suggest that the alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals grow by aggregation and the Ostwald ripening process. PL properties of alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals decrease with an increase in the optical band-gap values (3.19-3.23 eV). Finally, we observed that large hexagonal rod-like alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals prepared by the SC method exhibited a major PL emission intensity relative to alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals prepared by the CP and CH methods.

The knowledge of electronic and local structures is a fundamental step towards understanding the properties of ferroelectric ceramics. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of Pb1-xLaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 ferroelectric samples was measured in order to know how the local order and electronic structure are related to their ferroelectric property, which was tailored by the substitution of lead by lanthanum atoms. The analysis of XANES spectra collected at Ti K- and L-edges XANES showed that the substitution of Pb by La leads to a decrement of local distortion around Ti atoms on the TiO6 octahedron. The analysis of O K-edge XANES spectra showed that the hybridization between O 2p and Pb 6sp states is related to the displacement of Ti atoms in the TiO6 octahedra. Based on these results, it is possible to determine that the degree of ferroelectricity in these samples and the manifestation of relaxor behavior are directly related to the weakening of O 2p and Pb 6sp hybridization. The persistent luminescence of CdSiO3:Tb3+ was investigated with photoluminescence, thermoluminescence (TL), synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption (XANES and EXAFS) and UV-VUV spectroscopies. Only the typical intraconfigurational 4f(8)-4f(8) transitions of the Tb3+ ion were observed with no traces of band emission in either the conventional UV excited or persistent luminescence spectra. The trap structure from TL with three traps from 0.65 to 0.85 eV is ideal for room-temperature persistent luminescence similar to, e.g., Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu2+,R3+. Despite the rather low band gap energy, 5.28 eV, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is produced only under UV irradiation due to the inauspicious position of the F-7(6) ground level deep in the band gap of CdSiO3. This confirms the role of electrons as the charge carriers in the mechanism of Tb3+ persistent luminescence. The XANES spectra indicated the presence of only the trivalent Tb3+ species, thus excluding the direct Tb3+ -> Tb-IV oxidation during the charging process of persistent luminescence. Eventually, a unique persistent luminescence mechanism for Tb3+ in CdSiO3 was constructed based on the comprehensive experimental data.

Intense phytoplankton blooms were observed along the Patagonian shelf-break with satellite ocean color data, but few in situ optical observations were made in that region. We examine the variability of phytoplankton absorption and particulate scattering coefficients during such blooms on the basis of field data. The chlorophyll-a concentration, [Chla], ranged from 0.1 to 22.3 mg m−3 in surface waters. The size fractionation of [Chla] showed that 80% of samples were dominated by nanophytoplankton (N-group) and 20% by microphytoplankton (M-group). Chlorophyll-specific phytoplankton absorption coefficients at 440 and 676 nm, a*ph(440) and a*ph(676), and particulate scattering coefficient at 660 nm, b*p(660), ranged from 0.018 to 0.173, 0.009 to 0.046, and 0.031 to 2.37 m2 (mg Chla)−1, respectively. Both a*ph(440) and a*ph(676) were statistically higher for the N-group than M-group and also considerably higher than expected from global trends as a function of [Chla]. This result suggests that size of phytoplankton cells in Patagonian waters tends to be smaller than in other regions at similar [Chla]. The phytoplankton cell size parameter, Sf, derived from phytoplankton absorption spectra, proved to be useful for interpreting the variability in the data around the general inverse dependence of a*ph(440), a*ph(676), and b*p(660) on [Chla]. Sf also showed a pattern along the increasing trend of a*ph(440) and a*ph(676) as a function of the ratios of some accessory pigments to [Chla]. Our results suggest that the variability in phytoplankton absorption and scattering coefficients in Patagonian waters is caused primarily by changes in the dominant phytoplankton cell size accompanied by covariation in the concentrations of accessory pigments.

Changes in bioavailability of phosphorus (P) during pedogenesis and ecosystem development have been shown for geogenic calcium phosphate (Ca-P). However, very little is known about long-term changes of biogenic Ca-P in soil. Long-term transformation characteristics of biogenic Ca-P were examined using anthropogenic soils along a chronosequence from centennial to millennial time scales. Phosphorus fractionation of Anthrosols resulted in overall consistency with the Walker and Syers model of geogenic Ca-P transformation during pedogenesis. The biogenic Ca-P (e.g., animal and fish bones) disappeared to 3% of total P within the first ca. 2,000 years of soil development. This change concurred with increases in P adsorbed on metal-oxides surfaces, organic P, and occluded P at different pedogenic time. Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy revealed that the crystalline and therefore thermodynamically most stable biogenic Ca-P was transformed into more soluble forms of Ca-P over time. While crystalline hydroxyapatite (34% of total P) dominated Ca-P species after about 600-1,000 years, beta-tricalcium phosphate increased to 16% of total P after 900-1,100 years, after which both Ca-P species disappeared. Iron-associated P was observable concurrently with Ca-P disappearance. Soluble P and organic P determined by XANES maintained relatively constant (58-65%) across the time scale studied. Disappearance of crystalline biogenic Ca-P on a time scale of a few thousand years appears to be ten times faster than that of geogenic Ca-P.

Polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP)-capped platinum nanoparticles (NPs) are found to change shape from spherical to flat when deposited on mesoporous silica substrates (SBA-15). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses are used in these studies. The SAXS results indicate that, after deposition, the 2 nm NPs have an average gyration radius 22% larger than in solution, while the EXAFS measurements indicate a decrease in first neighbor co-ordination number from 9.3 to 7.4. The deformation of these small capped NPs is attributed to interactions with the surface of the SBA-15 support, as evidenced by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES).
