Background: Dysregulation of HPA axis has been widely described in subjects with bipolar disorder (BD), including changes in cortisol levels during mood episodes and euthymia. However, most of the studies were done with medicated BD patients with variable length of illness, which was shown to interfere on peripheral cortisol levels. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate plasma cortisol levels in drug-naive BD subjects during the first manic episode, as well as investigate the relationship between plasma cortisol levels and manic symptomatology. Methods: Twenty-six drug-naive patients were enrolled meeting criteria for a first manic episode in bipolar I disorder. Severity of mania was assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). The control group included 27 healthy subjects matched by age and gender. Cortisol was quantified using a direct radioimmunoassay. Results: Plasma cortisol levels were decreased during first manic episode compared to healthy controls. Higher cortisol levels were positively associated with the presence of irritability (dysphoria), while elated mania showed lower cortisol levels compared to controls. Limitation: Data including larger samples are lacking. Conclusion: Higher cortisol in dysphoric mania compared to predominantly elated/euphoric mania may indicate a clinical and neurobiological polymorphic phenomenon, potentially involving a higher biological sensitivity to stress in the presence of irritable mood. The present findings highlight the importance to add a dimensional approach to the traditional categorical diagnosis for future neurobiological studies in BD. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This study aimed to verify the influence of the transport in open or closed compartments (0 h), followed by two resting periods (1 and 3 h) for the slaughter process on the levels of cortisol as a indicative of stress level. At the slaughterhouse, blood samples were taken from 86 lambs after the transport and before slaughter for plasma cortisol analysis. The method of transport influenced in the cortisol concentration (0 h; P < 0.01). The animals transported in the closed compartment had a lower level (28.97 ng ml(-1)) than the animals transported in the open compartment (35.49 ng ml(-1)). After the resting period in the slaughterhouse. there was a decline in the plasmatic cortisol concentration, with the animals subjected to 3 h of rest presenting the lower average cortisol value (24.14 ng ml(-1); P < 0.05) than animals subjected to 1 h of rest (29.95 ng ml(-1)). It can be inferred that the lambs that remained 3 h in standby before slaughter had more time to recover from the stress of the transportation than those that waited just 1 h. Visual access to the external environment during the transport of the lambs is a stressful factor changing the level of plasmatic cortisol, and the resting period before slaughter was effective in lowering stress, reducing the plasmatic cortisol in the lambs.

In this work we characterized the social hierarchy of non-reproductive individuals of Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840). independently for both sexes, and its relationship to the opportunity for social status ascent. Female and male individuals who were located on the top rank of the social hierarchy, ascended in social status when the opportunity arose, therefore indicating that dominance is directly correlated with social ascent likelihood. Dominance was positively correlated with size in males but not in females, suggesting for the latter a relationship with intrinsic features such as aggressiveness or personality rather than to body and/or ovarian size. Physiological and morphometrical variables related to reproduction, stress and body color were measured in non-reproductive fish and correlated with dominance and social ascent likelihood. Dominance was negatively correlated with plasma cortisol levels for both sexes. No correlation with dominance was found for androgen plasma levels (testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone). No correlation was detected between dominance and the selected morphological and physiological variables measured in females, suggesting no reproductive inhibition in this sex at a physiological level and that all females seem to be ready for reproduction. In contrast, social hierarchy of non-reproductive males was found to be positively correlated with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) pituitary content levels and gonadosomatic indexes. This suggests an adaptive mechanism of non reproductive males, adjusting their reproductive investment in relation to their likelihood for social status ascent, as perceived by their position in the social hierarchy. This likelihood is translated into a physiological signal through plasma cortisol levels that inhibit gonad investment through pituitary inhibition of FSH, representing an anticipatory response to the opportunity for social status ascent.
