We consider a toy del to analyze the consequences of dark matter interaction with a dark energy background on the overall rotation of galaxy clusters and the misalignment between their dark matter and baryon distributions when compared to ACDM predictions. The interaction parameters are found via a genetic algorithm search. The results obtained suggest that interaction is a basic phenomenon whose effects are detectable even in simple models of galactic dynamics.
Enhancement of Nematic Order and Global Phase Diagram of a Lattice Model for Coupled Nematic Systems
Resumo:
We use an infinite-range Maier-Saupe model, with two sets of local quadrupolar variables and restricted orientations, to investigate the global phase diagram of a coupled system of two nematic subsystems. The free energy and the equations of state are exactly calculated by standard techniques of statistical mechanics. The nematic-isotropic transition temperature of system A increases with both the interaction energy among mesogens of system B, and the two-subsystem coupling J. This enhancement of the nematic phase is manifested in a global phase diagram in terms of the interaction parameters and the temperature T. We make some comments on the connections of these results with experimental findings for a system of diluted ferroelectric nanoparticles embedded in a nematic liquid-crystalline environment.

The liquid-liquid equilibria of systems composed of rice bran oil, free fatty acids, ethanol and water were investigated at temperatures ranging from 10 to 60 degrees C. The results of the present study indicated that the mutual solubility of the compounds decreased with an increase in the water content of the solvent and a decrease in the temperature of the solution. The experimental data set was correlated by applying the UNIQUAC model. The average variance between the experimental and calculated compositions was 0.35%, indicating that the model can accurately predict behavior of the compounds at different temperatures and degrees of hydration. The adjustment of interaction parameters enables both the simulation of liquid-liquid extractors for deacidification of vegetable oil and the prediction of phase compositions for the oil and alcohol-rich phases that are generated during cooling of the stream exiting the extractor (when using ethanol as the solvent). The influence of deposition parameters, namely polymer concentration and pH of the deposition solution, cleaning, and drying steps on the morphology and electrical characteristics of polyaniline and sulfonated polystyrene (PANI/PSS) nanostructured films deposited by the self-assembly technique is evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, optical and atomic force microscopy, and electrical resistance measurements. It is found that stirring the cleaning solution during the cleaning step is crucial for obtaining homogenous films. Stirring of the cleaning solution also influences the amount of PANI adsorbed in the films. In this regard, the drying process seems to be less critical since PANI amount and film thickness are similar in films dried with N-2 flow or with an absorbent tissue. It is observed, however, that drying with N-2 flow results in rougher films. As an additional point, an assessment of the influence of the deposition method (manual versus mechanical) on the film characteristics was carried out. A significant difference on the amount of PANI and film thickness between films prepared by different human operators and by a homemade mechanical device was observed. The variability in film thickness and PANI adsorbed amount is smaller in films mechanically assembled. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Attempts to improve beef tenderness through supplementation with dietary vitamin D-3 have been challenged by null results and negative impacts on animal performance and carcass traits. Because vitamin D-3 is also synthesised by the animal via ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, the effectiveness of supplementation with dietary vitamin D-3 may be modulated by the degree of exposure of the animal to sunlight. Hence, this work aimed to verify whether dietary vitamin D-3 modifies meat quality without negatively affecting animal performance and carcass traits in B. indicus beef cattle that were either exposed to or protected from natural sunlight. Forty-two (411 +/- 38 kg) Nellore-type castrated males were fed a high-concentrate diet for 45 days after assignment to a treatment group. The treatments comprised combinations of three levels of vitamin D3 [ViTD - none (V0) or 2 x 10(6) IU of vitamin D-3 administered for either 2 (V2) or 8 (V8) consecutive days pre-slaughter] and two shading conditions (SHADE - unshaded or shaded). The post-mortem (pm) measurements were taken in the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle. The animal performance and carcass traits were unaffected by ViTD or SHADE The V2 treatment increased the Myofibrillar Fragmentation Index in shaded animals compared to unshaded ones. Animals under shade had higher muscle calcium concentration. There was no effect of either ViTD or SHADE on the shear force. The L* values were higher at 24 h pm than at 0 and 1 h pm, with no differences among the animals in the ViTD or SHADE groups. Higher a* values were observed among animals in the V8 group than in the V0 group, and higher b* values were observed among animals in the V8 group than in the V2 or V0 groups, which were not different. In conclusion, ViTD and SHADE did not affect animal performance, carcass traits or shear force, whereas animals receiving a lower ViTD dosage and SHADE exhibited altered myofibrillar fragmentation. ViTD affected the colour parameters, and changes in the lightness of the beef related to the time pm were found in meat from animals under SHADE. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of the room temperature ionic liquid (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMMI][BF4])) on the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) was studied. The electrochemical performance of biosensors prepared following different protocols indicated a beneficial effect of the ionic liquid on the analytical parameters. The chemical interaction between GOx, [BMMI][BF4] and glutaraldehyde was investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and circular dichroism (CD). Structural changes of the biomolecule were observed to depend on the method used for the immobilization. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aims: Inflammation may have an important role in the beginning and in the progress of cardiovascular diseases. Testosterone exerts important effects on vascular function, which is altered in arterial hypertension. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of endogenous testosterone on leukocyte behavior in post-capillary venules of the mesenteric bed of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Main methods: 18 week-old intact SHR, castrated SHR and normotensive rats (intact Wistar) were used. Blood pressure was measured by tail plethysmography and serum testosterone levels by ELISA. Leukocyte rolling, adhesion and migration were evaluated in vivo in situ by intravital microscopy. Key findings: Castration significantly reduced blood pressure and reversed the increased leukocyte rolling and adhesion observed in SHRs. Leukocyte counts and other hemodynamic parameters did not differ among groups. SHRs displayed increased protein expression of P-selectin and ICAM-1 in mesenteric venules when compared to intact Wistar. Castration of SHRs restored the protein expression of the cell adhesion molecules. Significance: The findings of the present study demonstrate the critical role of endogenous testosterone mediating the effects of hypertension increasing leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction. Increased expression of cell adhesion molecules contribute to the effects of endogenous testosterone promoting increased leukocyte rolling and adhesion in SHRs. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Frequency-dependent electroluminescence and electric current response spectroscopy were applied to polymeric light-emitting electrochemical cells in order to obtain information about the operation mechanism regimes of such devices. Three clearly distinct frequency regimes could be identified: a dielectric regime at high frequencies; an ionic transport regime, characterized by ionic drift and electronic diffusion; and an electrolytic regime, characterized by electronic injection from the electrodes and electrochemical doping of the conjugated polymer. From the analysis of the results, it was possible to evaluate parameters like the diffusion speed of electronic charge carriers in the active layer and the voltage drop necessary for operation. Dispersion of photoluminescent rare earth metal complexes in polymer matrices is of great interest due to the possibility of avoiding the saturation of the photoluminescent signal. The possibility of using a natural ionic conducting polymer matrix was investigated in this study. Samples of agar-based electrolytes containing europium picrate were prepared and characterized by physical and chemical analyses. The FTIR spectra indicated strong interaction of agar O-H and 3.6-anhydro-galactose C-O groups with glycerol and europium picrate. The DSC analyses revealed no glass transition temperature of the samples in the -60 to 250 degrees C range. From the thermogravimetry (TG), a thermal stability of the samples of up to 180 degrees C was stated. The membranes were subjected to ionic conductivity measurement, which provided the values of 2.6 x 10(-6) S/cm for the samples with acetic acid and 1.6 x 10(-5) S/cm for the samples without acetic acid. Moreover, the temperature-dependent ionic conductivity measurements revealed both Arrhenius and VTF models of the conductivity depending on the sample. Surface visualization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated good uniformity. The samples were also applied in small electrochromic devices and showed good electrochemical stability. The present work confirmed that these materials may perform as satisfactory multifunctional component layers in the field of electrochemical devices. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Herein, we demonstrate the physical and chemical characterizations of the supramolecular complex formed between beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD) and bradykinin potentiating nonapeptide (BPP9a), an endogenous toxin found in Bothrops jararaca. Circular dichroism results indicate a conformational change in the BPP9a secondary structure upon its complexation with beta CD. Nuclear magnetic resonance results, mainly from NOESY experiments, and theoretical calculations showed a favorable interaction between the tryptophan residue of BPP9a and the beta CD cavity. Thermodynamic inclusion parameters were investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry, demonstrating that beta CD/BPP9a complex formation is an exothermic process that results in a reduction in entropy. Additionally, in vitro degradation study of BPP9a against trypsin (37 degrees C, pH 7.2) showed higher stability of peptide in presence of beta CD. This beta CD/BPP9a complex, which presents new chemical properties arising from the peptide inclusion process, may be useful as an antihypertensive drug in oral pharmaceutical formulations. The ability to entrap drugs within vehicles and subsequently release them has led to new treatments for a number of diseases. Based on an associative phase separation and interfacial diffusion approach, we developed a way to prepare DNA gel particles without adding any kind of cross-linker or organic solvent. Among the various agents studied, cationic surfactants offered particularly efficient control for encapsulation and DNA release from these DNA gel particles. The driving force for this strong association is the electrostatic interaction between the two components, as induced by the entropic increase due to the release of the respective counter-ions. However, little is known about the influence of the respective counter-ions on this surfactant-DNA interaction. Here we examined the effect of different counter-ions on the formation and properties of the DNA gel particles by mixing DNA (either single-(ssDNA) or double-stranded (dsDNA)) with the single chain surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTA). In particular, we used as counter-ions of this surfactant the hydrogen sulfate and trifluoromethane sulfonate anions and the two halides, chloride and bromide. Effects on the morphology of the particles obtained, the encapsulation of DNA and its release, as well as the haemocompatibility of these particles are presented, using counter-ion structure and DNA conformation as controlling parameters. Analysis of the data indicates that the degree of counter-ion dissociation from the surfactant micelles and the polar/hydrophobic character of the counter-ion are important parameters in the final properties of the particles. The stronger interaction with amphiphiles for ssDNA than for dsDNA suggests the important role of hydrophobic interactions in DNA.

The objectives of the present study were to characterize and define homogenous production environments of composite beef cattle in Brazil in terms of climatic and geographic variables using multivariate exploratory techniques and to use them to assess the presence of G x E for birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW). Data from animals born between 1995 and 2008 on 36 farms located in 27 municipalities of the Brazilian states were used. Fifteen years of climate observations (mean minimum and maximum annual temperature and mean annual rainfall) and geographic (latitude, longitude and altitude) data were obtained for each municipality where the farms were located for characterization of the production environments. Hierarchical and nonhierarchical cluster analysis was used to group farms located in regions with similar environmental variables into clusters. Six clusters of farms were formed. The effect of sire-cluster interaction was tested by single-trait analysis using deviance information criterion (DIC). Genetic parameters were estimated by multi-trait analysis considering the same trait to be different in each cluster. According to the values of DIC, the inclusion of sire-cluster effect did not improve the fit of the genetic evaluation model for BW and WW. Estimates of genetic correlations among clusters ranged from -0.02 to 0.92. The low genetic correlation among the most studied regions permits us to suggest that a separate genetic evaluation for some regions should be undertaken. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The two main tools to determine the dynamical and physical parameters of exoplanet systems are the radial velocity (RV) measurements and, when available, transit timings. The two techniques are complementary: The RV's allow us to know some of the orbital elements while the transit timings allow us to obtain the orbital inclination and planetary radius, impossible of obtain from the RV, and to resolve the indetermination in the determination of the planet mass from the RV's. The space observation of transiting planets is however not limited to transit times. They extend to long periods of time and are precise enough to provide information on variations along the orbit. Besides the effects of stellar rotation, deserve mention the Doppler shift in the radiation flux, as consequence of stellar movement around the center of mass, or Beaming Effect (BE); the Ellipsoidal Variability (EV) due to the tidal deformation of the star due to the gravitation of its close companion; and the Reflection (ER) of the stellar radiation incident on the planet and re-emitted to the observer. In the case of large hot Jupiters, these effects are enhanced by the strong gravitational interaction and the analysis of the light variation allows us independent estimates of the mass and radius of planet. The planetary system CoRoT 3 is favorable for such analysis. In this case, the secondary is a brown dwarf whose mass is of the order of 22Mj. We show results obtained from the analysis of 35 RV measurements, 236999 photometric observations and 11 additional RV observations made during a transit to determine the star rotation via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. The results obtained from this determination are presented in this communication. The results are compared to those resulting from other determinations.

This work reports on the photophysical properties of zinc porphyrins meso-tetrakis methylpyridiniumyl (Zn2+TMPyP) and meso-tetrakis sulfonatophenyl (Zn2+TPPS) in homogeneous aqueous solutions and in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. The excited-state dynamic was investigated with the Z-scan technique, UV-Vis absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Photophysical parameters were obtained by analyzing the experimental data with a conventional five-energy-level diagram. The interaction of the charged side porphyrin groups with oppositely charged surfactants can reduce the electrostatic repulsion between porphyrin molecules leading to aggregation, which affected the porphyrin characteristics such as absorption cross-sections, lifetimes and quantum yields. The interaction between anionic ZnTPPS with cationic CTAB micelles induced the formation of porphyrin J-aggregates, while this effect was not observed in the interaction of ZnTMPyP with SDS micelles. This difference is, probably, due to the difference in electrostatic repulsion between the porphyrin molecules. The insights obtained by these results are important for the understanding of the photophysical behavior of porphyrins, regarding potential applications in pharmacokinetics as encapsulation of photosensitizer for drug delivery systems and in its interaction with cellular membrane.
