The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied in KOH electrolyte on carbon supported epsilon-manganese dioxide (epsilon-MnO2/C). The epsilon-MnO2/C catalyst was prepared via thermal decomposition of manganese nitrate and carbon powder (Vulcan XC-72) mixtures. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed in order to determine the crystalline structure of the resulting composite, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) was used to evaluate the chemical composition of the synthesized material. The electrochemical studies were conducted using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and quasi-steady state polarization measurements carried out with an ultra thin layer rotating ring/disk electrode (RRDE) configuration. The electrocatalytic results obtained for 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) and alpha-MnO2/C for the ORR, considered as one of the most active manganese oxide based catalyst for the ORR in alkaline media, were included for comparison. The RRDE results revealed that the ORR on the MnO2 catalysts proceeds preferentially through the complete 4e(-) reduction pathway via a 2 plus 2e(-) reduction process involving hydrogen peroxide as an intermediate. A benchmark close to the performance of 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) was observed for the epsilon-MnO2/C material in the kinetic control region, superior to the performance of alpha-MnO2/C, but a higher amount of HO2- was obtained when epsilon-MnO2/C was used as catalyst. The higher production of hydrogen peroxide on epsilon-MnO2/C was related to the presence of structural defects, typical of this oxide, while the better catalytic performance in the kinetic control region compared to alpha-MnO2/C was related with the higher electrochemical activity for the proton insertion kinetics, which is a structure sensitive process. In this paper we report a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNps) and their activities towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV-vis) and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-protected colloidal AgNps through direct reduction of Ag+ by glycerol in alkaline medium at room temperature. For the ORR tests, the AgNps were directly produced onto carbon to yield the Ag/C catalyst. Levich plots revealed the process to occur via 2.7 electrons, suggesting that the carbon support contributes to the ORR. We discuss here possibilities of improving the catalytic properties of the Ag/C for ORR by optimizing the parameters of the synthesis.

In this paper we report the electrosynthesis of PVA-protected PtCo films (PVA = poly(vinylalcohol)) and their activities towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). PtCo electrodeposits were potentiostatically obtained in the presence and absence of PVA at distinct potentials. The film morphology and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), which revealed that the use of PVA in the electrodeposition of PtCo films was decisive to achieve better film composition control. Cyclic voltammetry for PVA-protected PtCo films showed that the electrochemical surface area is dependent on the electrodeposition potentials and suggested different adsorption strengths of oxygen-containing species. Films produced in the presence of PVA presented the following activity order towards ORR as a function of the electrodeposition potential (vs. Ag/AgCl): -0.9 V> -0.8 V> -1.0 V> -0.7 V. In contrast, PtCo films electrodeposited in the absence of PVA displayed very similar activities regardless of the electrodeposition potential. The simplicity of the electrodeposition method combined with its effectiveness enabled the production of "model electrodes" for investigating the fundamental aspects of the reactions taking place in the fuel cell cathodes. The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Reduction of nitrate on palladium-modified platinum single-crystal electrodes has been investigated both voltammetrically and spectroscopically in acidic media (pH = 1). Results obtained in H2O and D2O solvents are compared for the three crystallographic orientations. FTIR and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results clearly indicate that the isotopic substitution of the solvent has a large effect in the mechanism of the reaction, changing the nature of the detected products. For Pt(111)/Pd and Pt(100)/Pd, N2O is detected as the main product of nitrate reduction when D2O is used as solvent, while no N2O is detected when the reaction is performed in H2O. For Pt(110)/Pd, N2O is detected in both solvents, although the use of D2O clearly favours the preferential formation of this product. The magnitude of voltammetric currents is also affected by the nature of the solvent. This has been analysed considering, in addition to the different product distribution, the existence of different transport numbers and optical constants of the solvent.

Three nanostructured platinum-niobium supported on Vulcan XC-72R carbon black materials were prepared as catalysts for the ethanol electroxidation: (i) deposition of platinum and niobium on Vulcan XC-72R carbon black, (ii) platinum decorated on a mixture of commercial amorphous Nb2O5/carbon black, and (iii) the same than ii but using crystalline Nb2O5, by reduction of the precursors with sodium borohydride in ethanol. All the catalysts showed platinum crystal sizes in the range of 3-4 nm, with no or little modification of the lattice parameter. The analyses of the electronic structure from the XANES region of the XAS spectra displayed some interactions between platinum and niobium, despite the niobium was primarily in the form of pentoxide in all the catalysts. CO stripping exhibited a promising low onset potential and a large current density, especially in the case of the deposited catalyst. Ethanol electroxidation experiments revealed that the Pt-Nb(2)O(5)crystalline/C generated the largest current. However it was not effective to completely oxidize ethanol, leading to acetic acid as the main product. In this sense, the highest efficiency for the complete oxidation of ethanol was obtained for the deposited catalyst. These results were interpreted in terms of the physico-chemical characteristic displayed by the different catalysts. (C) 2012 The Electrochemical Society. The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was evaluated using a polycrystalline Au substrate modified with two different amounts of Pt using the galvanic exchange methodology. FTIR results suggest that Pt deposits have a greater ability to break the C-C bond present in the ethanol molecule. However, under potentiostatic conditions both modified Au surfaces undergo faster deactivation in comparison with polycrystalline platinum as indicated by the chronoamperometric results. XPS results indicate the presence of two phases depending on the Pt content. These are: (i) Pt-Au alloy and (ii) segregated Pt. The structural and electronic properties of these phases were related to the differences observed in the catalytic activity.

Pt extended surfaces and nanoparticle electrodes are used to understand the origin of anomalous activities for electrocatalytic reactions in alkaline electrolytes as a function of cycling/time. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of the surfaces before and after cycling in alkaline electrolytes was used to understand the morphology of the impurities and their impact on the catalytic sites. The nature of the contaminant species is identified as 3d-transition metal cations, and the formation of hydr(oxy)oxides of these elements is established as the main reason for the observed behavior. We find that, while for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) the blocking of the sites by the undesired 3d-transition metal hydr(oxy)oxide species leads to deactivation of the reaction activities, the CO oxidation reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can have beneficial effects from the same impurities, the latter being dependent on the exact nature of the adsorbing species. These results show the significance of impurities present in real electrolytes and their impact on electrocatalysis.

A comparative study using different proportions of CeO2/C (4%, 9% and 13% CeO2) was performed to produce H2O2, a reagent used in the oxidation of organic pollutants and in electro-Fenton reactions for the production of the hydroxyl radical (OH center dot), a strong oxidant agent used in the electrochemical treatment of aqueous wastewater. The CeO2/C materials were prepared by a modified polymeric precursor method (PPM). X-ray diffraction analysis of the CeO2/C prepared by the PPM identified two phases. CeO2 and CeO2. The average size of the crystallites in these materials was close to 7 nm. The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were evaluated by the rotating ring-disk electrode technique. The results showed that the 4% CeO2/C prepared by the PPM was the best composite for the production of H2O2 in a 1 mol L-1 NaOH electrolyte solution. For this material, the number of electrons transferred and the H2O2 percentage efficiency were 3.1 and 44%, respectively. The ring-current of the 4% CeO2/C was higher than that of Vulcan carbon, the reference material for H2O2 production, which produced 41% H2O2 and transferred 3.1 electrons per molecule of oxygen. The overpotential for this reaction on the ceria-based catalyst was substantially lower (approximately 200 mV), demonstrating the higher catalytic performance of this material. Gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) containing the catalyst were used to evaluate the real amount of H2O2 produced during exhaustive electrolysis. The 4% CeO2/C GDE produced 871 mg L-1 of H2O2, whereas the Vulcan carbon GDE produced a maximum amount of only 407 mg L-1. Thus, the 4% CeO2/C electrocatalyst prepared by the PPM is a promising material for H2O2 electrogeneration in alkaline media. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents the results from the development of bio-cathodes for the application on paper-based biofuel cells. Our main goal here is to demonstrate the possibility of using different designs of air-breathing bio-cathodes and ink-based bio-cathodes for this new type of paper based electrochemical cell. The electrochemical performance for the bio-electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction was studied by using open circuit voltage and amperometry measurements, as well as polarization curves to probe the four-electron reduction reaction of ambient oxygen catalyzed by bilirubin oxidase (BOx). The electrochemical measurements showed that all procedures allowed the direct electron transfer from the active site of the bilirubin oxidase to the electrode surface with a limiting current density of almost 500 mu A cm(-2) for an air-breathing BOx cathode and 150 mu A cm(-2) for an ink based BOx cathode. Under a load of 300 mV a stable current density was obtained for 12 h of continuous operation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the last years, extensive research has been devoted to develop novel materials and structures with high electrochemical performance for intermediate-temperatures solid-oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) electrodes. In recent works, we have investigated the structural and electrochemical properties of La0:6Sr0:4CoO3 (LSCO) and La0:6Sr0:4Co1¡yFeyO3 (LSCFO) nanostructured cathodes, finding that they exhibit excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction [1,2]. These materials were prepared by a pore-wetting technique using polycarbonate porous membranes as templates. Two average pore sizes were used: 200 nm and 800 nm. Our scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) study showed that the lower pore size yielded nanorods, while nanotubes were obtained with the bigger pore size. All the samples were calcined at 1000oC in order to produce materials with the desired perovskite-type crystal structure. In this work, we analyze the oxidation states of Co and Fe and the local atomic order of LSCO and LSCFO nanotubes and nanowires for various compositions. For this pur- pose we performed XANES and EXAFS studies on both Co and Fe K edges. These measurements were carried out at the D08B-XAFS2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). XANES spectroscopy showed that Co and Fe only change slightly their oxidation state upon Fe addition. Surprisingly, XANES results indicated that the content of oxygen vacancies is low, even though it is well-known that these materials are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. EXAFS results were consistent with those expected according to the rhombohedral crystal structure determined in previous X-ray powder dffraction investigations. [1] M.G. Bellino et al, J. Am. Chem. This Letter reports on the synthesis of Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled structures and compositions via a galvanic replacement reaction between Ag NPs and AuCl4(aq)- followed by the investigation of their optical and catalytic properties. Our results showed the formation of porous walls, hollow interiors and increased Au content in the Ag-Au NPs as the volume of AuCl4(aq)- employed in the reaction was increased. These variations led to a red shift and broadening of the SPR peaks and an increase of up to 10.9-folds in the catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol relative to Ag NPs. In this paper we report a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNps) and their electrocatalytic activity for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR). Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV- vis) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)protected colloidal AuNps through direct reduction of Au3+ by glycerol in alkaline medium at room temperature. For the BOR tests the AuNps were directly produced onto carbon to yield the Au/C catalyst. Levich plots revealed that the process occured via 7.2 electrons, therefore near the theoretical value of 8 electrons. When compared to bulk Au, the gold nanoparticles presented enhanced catalytic properties since the onset potential for BOR was shifted 200 mV towards negative potentials. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are attractive energy generators for powering portable electronic devices, mainly due to their high energy density and number of electrons per borohydride ion. However, the lack of a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the borohydride oxidation reaction limits the performance of these devices. The most commonly studied electrocatalysts for this reaction are composed of gold and platinum. Nevertheless, for these metals, the borohydride electrooxidation reaction mechanism (BOR) is not completely understood, and the total oxidation reaction, involving eight electrons per BH4- species, competes with parallel reactions, with a lower number of exchanged electrons and/or with heterogeneous chemical hydrolysis. Considering the above-mentioned issues, this work presents recent advances in the knowledge of the BOR pathways on polycrystalline (bulk) Au and Pt electrocatalysts. It presents the studies of the BOR reaction on Au and Pt electrodes using in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FUR), and on-line Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The spectroscopic and spectrometric data provided physical evidence of intermediate species and the formation of H-2 in the course of the BOR as a function of the electrode potential. These results enabled to advance in the knowledge about the BOR pathways on Au and Pt electrocatalysts. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract Background Biofuels produced from sugarcane bagasse (SB) have shown promising results as a suitable alternative of gasoline. Biofuels provide unique, strategic, environmental and socio-economic benefits. However, production of biofuels from SB has negative impact on environment due to the use of harsh chemicals during pretreatment. Consecutive sulfuric acid-sodium hydroxide pretreatment of SB is an effective process which eventually ameliorates the accessibility of cellulase towards cellulose for the sugars production. Alkaline hydrolysate of SB is black liquor containing high amount of dissolved lignin. Results This work evaluates the environmental impact of residues generated during the consecutive acid-base pretreatment of SB. Advanced oxidative process (AOP) was used based on photo-Fenton reaction mechanism (Fenton Reagent/UV). Experiments were performed in batch mode following factorial design L9 (Taguchi orthogonal array design of experiments), considering the three operation variables: temperature (°C), pH, Fenton Reagent (Fe2+/H2O2) + ultraviolet. Reduction of total phenolics (TP) and total organic carbon (TOC) were responsive variables. Among the tested conditions, experiment 7 (temperature, 35°C; pH, 2.5; Fenton reagent, 144 ml H2O2+153 ml Fe2+; UV, 16W) revealed the maximum reduction in TP (98.65%) and TOC (95.73%). Parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), BOD/COD ratio, color intensity and turbidity also showed a significant change in AOP mediated lignin solution than the native alkaline hydrolysate. Conclusion AOP based on Fenton Reagent/UV reaction mechanism showed efficient removal of TP and TOC from sugarcane bagasse alkaline hydrolysate (lignin solution). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on statistical optimization of the removal of TP and TOC from sugarcane bagasse alkaline hydrolysate employing Fenton reagent mediated AOP process.
