This paper describes the experimental study of the oscillatory electro-oxidation of glycerol on platinum under galvanostatic control. The system was investigated in both acidic and alkaline media and for different glycerol concentrations. In acidic supporting electrolyte, the oscillatory behavior is rather simple and the main features such as period, amplitude and waveform are barely affected by the glycerol concentration. A more complex picture including the presence of different temporal patterns and strong dependence with glycerol concentration emerges in alkaline medium. In both media, the composite oscillations visit two clearly discernible potential windows, and potential oscillations in alkaline media are observed only when the working electrode is kept stationary. The mechanistic implications of our findings are discussed in connection with available data obtained under close-to-equilibrium conditions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report new archeointensity data obtained from the analyses of baked clay elements (architectural and kiln brick fragments) sampled in Southeast Brazil and historically and/or archeologically dated between the end of the XVIth century and the beginning of the XXth century AD. The results were determined using the classical Thellier and Thellier protocol as modified by Coe, including partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) and pTRM-tail checks, and the Triaxe protocol, which involves continuous high-temperature magnetization measurements. In both protocols, TRM anisotropy and cooling rate TRM dependence effects were taken into account for intensity determinations which were successfully performed for 150 specimens from 43 fragments, with a good agreement between intensity results obtained from the two procedures. Nine site-mean intensity values were derived from three to eight fragments and defined with standard deviations of less than 8%. The site-mean values vary from similar to 25 mu T to similar to 42 mu T and describe in Southeast Brazil a continuous decreasing trend by similar to 5 mu T per century between similar to 1600 AD and similar to 1900 AD. Their comparison with recent archeointensity results obtained from Northeast Brazil and reduced at a same latitude shows that: (1) the geocentric axial dipole approximation is not valid between these southeastern and northeastern regions of Brazil, whose latitudes differ by similar to 10 degrees, and (2) the available global geomagnetic field models (gufm1 models, their recalibrated versions and the CALSK3 models) are not sufficiently precise to reliably reproduce the non-dipole field effects which prevailed in Brazil for at least the 1600-1750 period. The large non-dipole contribution thus highlighted is most probably linked to the evolution of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) during that period. Furthermore, although our dataset is limited, the Brazilian archeointensity data appear to support the view of a rather oscillatory behavior of the axial dipole moment during the past three centuries that would have been marked in particular by a moderate increase between the end of the XVIIIth century and the middle of the XIXth century followed by the well-known decrease from 1840 AD attested by direct measurements. 5 We employ the circular-polarization-resolved magnetophotoluminescence technique to probe the spin character of electron and hole states in a GaAs/AlGaAs strongly coupled double-quantum-well system. The photoluminescence (PL) intensities of the lines associated with symmetric and antisymmetric electron states present clear out-of-phase oscillations between integer values of the filling factor. and are caused by magnetic-field-induced changes in the population of occupied Landau levels near to the Fermi level of the system. Moreover, the degree of circular polarization of these emissions also exhibits the oscillatory behavior with increasing magnetic field. Both quantum oscillations observed in the PL intensities and in the degree of polarizations may be understood in terms of a simple single-particle approach model. The k . p method was used to calculate the photoluminescence peak energies and the degree of circular polarizations in the double-quantum-well structure as a function of the magnetic field. These calculations prove that the character of valence band states plays an important role in the determination of the degree of circular polarization and, thus, resulting in a magnetic-field-induced change of the polarization sign.

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of a family of steady-state solutions of a nonlinear reaction diffusion equation when some reaction and potential terms are concentrated in a e-neighborhood of a portion G of the boundary. We assume that this e-neighborhood shrinks to G as the small parameter e goes to zero. Also, we suppose the upper boundary of this e-strip presents a highly oscillatory behavior. Our main goal here was to show that this family of solutions converges to the solutions of a limit problem, a nonlinear elliptic equation that captures the oscillatory behavior. Indeed, the reaction term and concentrating potential are transformed into a flux condition and a potential on G, which depends on the oscillating neighborhood. Measurement-based quantum computation is an efficient model to perform universal computation. Nevertheless, theoretical questions have been raised, mainly with respect to realistic noise conditions. In order to shed some light on this issue, we evaluate the exact dynamics of some single-qubit-gate fidelities using the measurement-based quantum computation scheme when the qubits which are used as a resource interact with a common dephasing environment. We report a necessary condition for the fidelity dynamics of a general pure N-qubit state, interacting with this type of error channel, to present an oscillatory behavior, and we show that for the initial canonical cluster state, the fidelity oscillates as a function of time. This state fidelity oscillatory behavior brings significant variations to the values of the computational results of a generic gate acting on that state depending on the instants we choose to apply our set of projective measurements. As we shall see, considering some specific gates that are frequently found in the literature, the fast application of the set of projective measurements does not necessarily imply high gate fidelity, and likewise the slow application thereof does not necessarily imply low gate fidelity. Our condition for the occurrence of the fidelity oscillatory behavior shows that the oscillation presented by the cluster state is due exclusively to its initial geometry. Other states that can be used as resources for measurement-based quantum computation can present the same initial geometrical condition. Therefore, it is very important for the present scheme to know when the fidelity of a particular resource state will oscillate in time and, if this is the case, what are the best times to perform the measurements.

OSCILLATORY DYNAMICS IN SYSTEMS CONTAINING BROMATE AND 1,4-CYCLOHEXANEDIONE IN ACIDIC MEDIA. I. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE. We present in this work the influence of temperature on the dynamics of homogeneous chemical systems containing bromate and 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD) in acidic media. In particular, the following systems were studied: bromate/1,4-CHD/acid, bromate/1,4-CHD/ferroin/acid and bromate/1,4-CHD/trisbipyridine ruthenium/acid. Investigations were carried out by means of an electrochemical probe, at five temperatures between 5 and 45 degrees C. Activation energies (E-a) were estimated in different ways for the pre-oscillatory and oscillatory regimes. In any case, the E-a was found to depend on the catalyst, composition and initial concentrations. In addition, it was observed that ferroin and trisbipyridine ruthenium act as catalysts only during the transition between the induction period and oscillatory regime.
