A new series of donor acceptor copolymers were synthesized via the Witting route and applied as an active layer in organic thin-films solar cells. These copolymers are composed of fluorene thiophene and phenylene thiophene units. The ratio between those was systematically varied, and copolymers containing 0%, 50%, and 75% of phenylene thiophene were characterized and evaluated when used in photovoltaic devices. The copolymers' composition, photophysical, electrical, and morphological properties are addressed and correlated with device performance. The 50% copolymer ratio was found to be the best copolymer of the series, yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) under air mass (AM) 1.5 conditions of 2.4% in the bilayer heterojunction with the C-60 molecule. Aiming at flexible electronics applications, solutions based on the heterojunction of this copolymer with PCBM (6,6-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester) were also successfully deposited using an inkjet printing method and used as an active layer in solar cells.

The influence of pH during hydrolysis of titanium(IV) isopropoxide on the morphological and electronic properties of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared by the sol-gel method is investigated and correlated to the photoelectrochemical parameters of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) based on TiO2 films. Nanoparticles prepared under acid pH exhibit smaller particle size and higher surface area, which result in higher dye loadings and better short-circuit current densities than DSCs based on alkaline TiO2-processed films. On the other hand, the product of charge collection and separation quantum yields in films with TiO2 obtained by alkaline hydrolysis is c. a. 27% higher than for the acid TiO2 films. The combination of acid and alkaline TiO2 nanoparticles as mesoporous layer in DSCs results in a synergic effect with overall efficiencies up to 6.3%, which is better than the results found for devices employing one of the nanoparticles separately. These distinct nanoparticles can be also combined by using the layer-by-layer technique (LbL) to prepare compact TiO2 films applied before the mesoporous layer. DSCs employing photoanodes with 30 TiO2 bilayers have shown efficiencies up to 12% higher than the nontreated photoanode ones. These results can be conveniently used to develop optimized synthetic procedures of TiO2 nanoparticles for several dye-sensitized solar cell applications.

The down-conversion process in Tb3+-Yb3+ co-doped Calibo glasses was studied. The emission, excitation and time-resolved measurements indicated the existence of an energy conversion through the excitation of Tb3+ ions to near-infrared emission by Yb3+ ions. The emission intensity dependence on excitation power confirms that the one-photon process is responsible for the Yb3+ emission. An enhanced Yb3+ emission was observed with Yb3+ doping and an optimal energy transfer efficiency of 32% was obtained before reaching near-infrared emission quenching. The mechanism of the non-resonant energy transfer from Tb3+ to Yb3+ is discussed in terms of the Tb3+-Yb3+ cross-relaxation and multiphonon decay processes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This work describes the synthesis of a series of sialylmimetic neoglycoconjugates represented by 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole-sialic acid derivatives containing galactose modified at either C-1 or C-6 positions, glucose or gulose at C-3 position, and by the amino acid derivative 1,2,3-triazole fused threonine-3-O-galactose as potential TcTS inhibitors and anti-trypanosomal agents. This series was obtained by Cu(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction ('click chemistry') between the azido-functionalized sugars 1-N(3)-Gal (commercial), 6-N(3)-Gal, 3-N(3)-Glc and 3-N(3)-Gul with the corresponding alkyne-based 2-propynyl-sialic acid, as well as by click chemistry reaction between the amino acid N(3)-ThrOBn with 3-O-propynyl-GalOMe. The 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose and the sialic acid-galactopyranoside showed high Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase (TcTS) inhibitory activity at 1.0 mM (approx. 90%), whilst only the former displayed relevant trypanocidal activity (IC(50) 260 mu M). These results highlight the 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose as a prototype for further design of new neoglycoconjugates against Chagas' disease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (magnetite) (MNPs) were prepared using different organic and inorganic bases. Strong inorganic base (KOH) and organic bases (NH4OH and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)) were used in the syntheses of the MNPs. The MNPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and magnetization measurements. MNPs prepared with strong inorganic base yielded an average size of 100 nm, whereas the average size of the MNPs prepared with the organic bases was 150 nm. The main competitive phase for MNPs prepared with the strong inorganic and organic bases was maghemite; however, syntheses with KOH yielded a pure magnetite phase. The transfection study performed with the MNPs revealed that the highest transfection rate was obtained with the MNPs prepared with KOH (74%). The correlation between the magnetic parameters and the transfection ratio without transfection agents indicated that MNPs prepared with KOH were a better vector for possible applications of these MNPs in biomedicine. HeLa cells incubated with MNP-KOH at 10 mu g/mL for 24 and 48 h exhibited a decrease in population in comparison with the control cells and it was presumably related to the toxicity of the MNPs. However, the cells incubated with MNP-KOH at 50 and 100 mu g/mL presented a very small difference in the viability between the cell populations studied at 24 and 48 h. These data illustrate the viability of HeLa cells treated with MNP-KOH and suggest the potential use of these MNPs in biomedical applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study investigates the use of solar heterogeneous photocatalyis (TiO2) for the destruction of [D-Leu]-Microcystin-LR, powerful toxin of widespread occurrence within cyanobacteria blooms. We extracted [D-Leu]-Microcystin-LR from a culture of Microcystis spp. and used a flat plate glass reactor coated with TiO2 (Degussa, P25) for the degradation studies. The irradiance was measured during the experiments with the aid of a spectroradiometer. After the degradation experiments, toxin concentrations were determined by HPLC and mineralization by TOC analyses. Acute and chronic toxicities were, quantified using mice and phosphatase inhibition in vitro assays, respectively. According to the performed experiments, 150 min were necessary to reduce the toxin concentration to the WHO's guideline for drinking water (from 10 to 1 mu g L-1) and to mineralize 90% of the initial carbon content. Another important finding is that solar heterogeneous photocatalysis was a destructive process indeed, not only for the toxin, but also for the other extract components and degradation products generated. Moreover, toxicity tests using mice have shown that the acute effect caused by the initial sample was removed. However, tests using the phosphatase enzyme indicated that it may be formed products capable of inducing chronic effects on mammals. The performed experiments indicate the feasibility of using solar heterogeneous photocatalysis for treating contaminated water with [D-Leu]-Microcystin-LR, not only due to its destruction, but also to the significant removal of organic matter and acute toxicity that can be achieved. Solar reactors can be attractive in photodegradation processes due to lower electrical energy demand. The performance of a solar reactor for two flow configurations, i.e., plug flow and mixed flow, is compared based on experimental results with a pilot-scale solar reactor. Aqueous solutions of phenol were used as a model for industrial wastewater containing organic contaminants. Batch experiments were carried out under clear sky, resulting in removal rates in the range of 96100?%. The dissolved organic carbon removal rate was simulated by an empirical model based on neural networks, which was adjusted to the experimental data, resulting in a correlation coefficient of 0.9856. This approach enabled to estimate effects of process variables which could not be evaluated from the experiments. Simulations with different reactor configurations indicated relevant aspects for the design of solar reactors.

Background Transformed cells of Escherichia coli DH5-α with pGFPuv, induced by IPTG (isopropyl-β-d-thiogalactopyranoside), express the green fluorescent protein (gfpuv) during growth phases. E. coli subjected to the combination of selective permeation by freezing/thawing/sonication cycles followed by the three-phase partitioning extraction (TPP) method were compared to the direct application of TPP to the same culture of E. coli on releasing gfpuv from the over-expressing cells. Material and Methods Cultures (37°C/100 rpm/ 24 h; μ = 0.99 h-1 - 1.10 h-1) of transformed (pGFP) Escherichia coli DH5-α, expressing the green fluorescent protein (gfpuv, absorbance at 394 nm and emission at 509 nm) were sonicated in successive intervals of sonication (25 vibrations/pulse) to determine the maximum amount of gfpuv released from the cells. For selective permeation, the transformed previously frozen (-75°C) cells were subjected to three freeze/thaw (-20°C/ 0.83°C/min) cycles interlaid by sonication (3 pulses/ 6 seconds/ 25 vibrations). The intracellular permeate with gfpuv in extraction buffer (TE) solution (25 mM Tris-HCl, pH 8.0, 1 mM β-mercaptoethanol β-ME, 0.1 mM PMSF) was subjected to the three-phase partitioning (TPP) method with t-butanol and 1.6 M ammonium sulfate. Sonication efficiency was verified on the application to the cells previously treated by the TPP method. The intra-cell releases were mixed and eluted through methyl HIC column with a buffer solution (10 mM Tris-HCl, 10 mM EDTA, pH 8.0). Results The sonication maximum released amount obtained from the cells was 327.67 μg gfpuv/mL (20.73 μg gfpuv/mg total proteins – BSA), after 9 min of treatment. Through the selective permeation by three repeated freezing/thawing/sonication cycles applied to the cells, a close content of 241.19 μg gfpuv/mL (29.74 μg gfpuv/mg BSA) was obtained. The specific mass range of gfpuv released from the same cultures, by the three-phase partitioning (TPP) method, in relation to total proteins, was higher, between 107.28 μg/mg and 135.10 μg/mg. Conclusions The selective permeation of gfpuv by freezing/thawing/sonication followed by TPP separation method was equivalent to the amount of gfpuv extracted from the cells directly by TPP; although selective permeation extracts showed better elution through the HIC column.
