The structural and magnetic properties of a Fe-based alloy before and after sintering have been analyzed. X ray diffraction measurements confirm the deformation of the magnetic particles in the compacted samples. After sintering, hysteresis energy dissipation, remanence and intrinsic coercivity differ by less than 10% as porosity changes from 15 to 7%.

Magnetic and catalytic gold nanoparticles were electrodeposited through potential pulse on dendrimer-carbon nanotube layer-by-layer (LbL) films. A plasmon absorption band at about 550 nm revealed the presence of nanoscale gold in the film. The location of the Au nanoparticles in the film was clearly observed by selecting the magnetic force microscopy mode. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the electrochemical synthesis of magnetic Au nanoparticles. In addition to the magnetic properties, the Au nanoparticles also exhibited high catalytic activity towards ethanol and glycerol oxidation in alkaline medium.

In recent years, structural composites manufactured by carbon fiber/epoxy laminates have been employed in large scale in aircraft industries. These structures require high strength under severe temperature changes of -56° until 80 °C. Regarding this scenario, the aim of this research was to reproduce thermal stress in the laminate plate developed by temperature changes and tracking possible cumulative damages on the laminate using ultrasonic C-scan inspection. The evaluation was based on attenuation signals and the C-scan map of the composite plate. The carbon fiber/epoxy plain weave laminate underwent temperatures of -60° to 80 °C, kept during 10 minutes and repeated for 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 times. After 1000 cycles, the specimens were inspected by C-scanning. A few changes in the laminate were observed using the inspection methodology only in specimens cycled 3000 times, or so. According to the found results, the used temperature range did not present enough conditions to cumulative damage in this type of laminate, which is in agreement with the macro - and micromechanical theory.

Terra Nova, 24, 380386, 2012 Abstract A high-resolution, integrated stratigraphic framework (stable isotope stratigraphy, standard calcareous nannofossil and foraminiferal biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy) together with geochemical and rock magnetic properties analyses of a complete and well-preserved succession at Contessa Valley (Gubbio, central Italy) have offered an excellent opportunity to identify and constrain the Palaeocene to early Eocene hyperthermals and carbon isotope excursions (CIEs). In addition, we provide the first evidence in the Tethys Ocean of CIEs, previously identified in the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Oceans, highlighting their global significance and of some unknown CIEs. Their characteristics are compared with those reported for deep-sea cores and other land-based sections to test whether the signature associated with CIEs documented in our composite section might give evidence for tracing them over wider areas. The Contessa composite section thus represents a reference succession also for insight into the magnetobiochronostratigraphy and the magnitude of early Palaeogene hyperthermals and CIEs.

The magnetic properties (first-order reversal curves, ferromagnetic resonance and decomposition of saturation remanent magnetization acquisition) of Magnetovibrio blakemorei, a cultivated marine magnetotactic bacterium, differ from those of other magnetotactic species from sediments deposited in lakes and marine habitats previously studied. This finding suggests that magnetite produced by some magnetotactic bacteria retains magnetic properties in relation to the crystallographic structure of the magnetic phase produced and thus might represent a magnetic fingerprint for a specific magnetotactic bacterium. The use of this fingerprint is a non-destructive, new technology that might allow for the identification and presence of specific species or types of magnetotactic bacteria in certain environments such as sediments.

Large-scale soil application of biochar may enhance soil fertility, increasing crop production for the growing human population, while also sequestering atmospheric carbon. But reaching these beneficial outcomes requires an understanding of the relationships among biochar's structure, stability, and contribution to soil fertility. Using quantitative C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we show that Terra Preta soils (fertile anthropogenic dark earths in Amazonia that were enriched with char >800 years ago) consist predominantly of char residues composed of similar to 6 fused aromatic rings substituted by COO- groups that significantly increase the soils' cation-exchange capacity and thus the retention of plant nutrients. We also show that highly productive, grassland-derived soils in the U.S, (Mollisols) contain char (generated by presettlement fires) that is structurally comparable to char in the Terra Preta soils and much more abundant than previously thought (similar to 40-50% of organic C). Our findings indicate that these oxidized char residues represent a particularly stable, abundant, and fertility-enhancing form of soil organic matter.

A tannin-phenolic resin (40 wt% of tannin, characterized by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and C-13 NMR, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry) was used to prepare composites reinforced with sisal fibers (30-70 wt%). Inverse gas chromatography results showed that the sisal fibers and the tannin-phenolic thermoset have close values of the dispersive component and also have predominance of acid sites (acid character) at the surface, confirming the favoring of interaction between the sisal fibers and the tannin-phenolic matrix at the interface. The Izod impact strength increased up to 50 wt% of sisal fibers. This composite also showed high storage modulus, and the lower loss modulus, confirming its good fiber/matrix interface, also observed by SEM images. A composite with good properties was prepared from high content of raw material obtained from renewable sources (40 wt% of tannin substituted the phenol in the preparation of the matrix and 50 wt% of matrix was replaced by sisal fibers). The encapsulation of magnetic transition-metal (TM) clusters inside carbon cages (fullerenes, nanotubes) has been of great interest due to the wide range of applications, which spread from medical sensors in magnetic resonance imaging to photonic crystals. Several theoretical studies have been reported; however, our atomistic understanding of the physical properties of encapsulated magnetic TM 3d clusters is far from satisfactory. In this work, we will report general trends, derived from density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation proposed by Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE), for the encapsulation properties of the TMm@C-n (TM = Fe, Co, Ni; m = 2-6, n = 60,70,80,90) systems. Furthermore, to understand the role of the van der Waals corrections to the physical properties, we employed the empirical Grimme's correction (PBE + D2). We found that both PBE and PBE + D2 functionals yield almost the same geometric parameters, magnetic and electronic properties, however, PBE + D2 strongly enhances the encapsulation energy. We found that the center of mass of the TMm clusters is displaced towards the inside C-n surfaces, except for large TMm clusters (m = 5 and 6). For few cases, e. g., Co-4 and Fe-4, the encapsulation changes the putative lowest-energy structure compared to the isolated TMm clusters. We identified few physical parameters that play an important role in the sign and magnitude of the encapsulation energy, namely, cluster size, fullerene equatorial diameter, shape, curvature of the inside C-n surface, number of TM atoms that bind directly to the inside C-n surface, and the van der Waals correction. The total magnetic moment of encapsulated TMm clusters decreases compared with the isolated TMm clusters, which is expected due to the hybridization of the d-p states, and strongly depends on the size and shape of the fullerene cages.

This study reports on the successful use of magnetic albumin nanosphere (MAN), consisting of maghemite nanoparticles hosted by albumin-based nanosphere, to target different sites within the central nervous system (CNS). Ultrastructural analysis by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the material collected from the mice was performed in the time window of 30 minutes up to 30 days after administration. Evidence found that the administered MAN was initially internalized and transported by erythrocytes across the blood-brain-barrier and transferred to glial cells and neuropils before internalization by neurons, mainly in the cerebellum. We hypothesize that the efficiency of MAN in crossing the BBB with no pathological alterations is due to the synergistic effect of its two main components, the iron-based nanosized particles and the hosting albumin-based nanospheres. We found that the MAN in targeting the CNS represents an important step towards the design of nanosized materials for clinical and diagnostic applications.

Nanocomposite fibers based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were prepared by solution blow spinning (SBS). Fiber morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). Electrical, thermal, surface and crystalline properties of the spun fibers were evaluated, respectively, by conductivity measurements (4-point probe), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle and X-ray diffraction (XRD). OM analysis of the spun mats showed a poor dispersion of MWCNT in the matrix, however dispersion in solution was increased during spinning where droplets of PLA in solution loaded with MWCNT were pulled by the pressure drop at the nozzle, producing PLA fibers filled with MWCNT. Good electrical conductivity and hydrophobicity can be achieved at low carbon nanotube contents. When only 1 wt% MWCNT was added to low-crystalline PLA, surface conductivity of the composites increased from 5 x 10(-8) to 0.46 S/cm. Addition of MWCNT can slightly influence the degree of crystallinity of PLA fibers as studied by XRD and DSC. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that MWCNT loading can decrease the onset degradation temperature of the composites which was attributed to the catalytic effect of metallic residues in MWCNT. Moreover, it was demonstrated that hydrophilicity slightly increased with an increase in MWCNT content. These results show that solution blow spinning can also be used to produce nanocomposite fibers with many potential applications such as in sensors and biosensors.

The electronic interactions between the [Cu(opba)]2- anions (where opba is orthophenylenebis (oxamato)) and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The opba can form molecular magnets, and the interactions of opba with SWCNTs can produce materials with very different magnetic/electronic properties. It is observed that the electronic interaction shows a dependence on the SWCNT diameter independent of whether they are metallic or semiconducting, although the interaction is stronger for metallic tubes. The interaction also is dependent on the amount of complex that is probably adsorbed on the carbon surface of the SWCNTs. Some charge transfer can be also occurring between the metallic complex and the SWCNTs. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion and hardness of different composite resins, photo-activated for 40 s with two different light guide tips, fiber optic and polymer. Methods: Five specimens were made for each group evaluated. The percentage of unreacted carbon double bonds (% C=C) was determined from the ratio of absorbance intensities of aliphatic C=C (peak at 1637 cm-1) against internal standard before and after curing of the specimen: aromatic C-C (peak at 1610 cm-1). The Vickers hardness measurements were performed in a universal testing machine. A 50 gf load was used and the indenter with a dwell time of 30 seconds. The degree of conversion and hardness mean values were analyzed separately by ANOVA and Tukey's test, with a significance level set at 5%. Results: The mean values of degree of conversion for the polymer and fiber optic light guide tip were statistically different (P<.001). The hardness mean values were statistically different among the light guide tips (P<.001), but also there was difference between top and bottom surfaces (P<.001). Conclusions: The results showed that the resins photo-activated with the fiber optic light guide tip promoted higher values for degree of conversion and hardness.

Hybrid materials with enhanced properties can now be obtained by combining nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and metallic nanoparticles, where the main challenge is to control fabrication conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that platinum nanoparticles (PtNps) can be electrogenerated within layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which serve as stabilizing matrices. The advantages of the possible control through electrogeneration were demonstrated with a homogeneous distribution of PtNps over the entire surface of the PAMAM/SWCNT LbL films, whose electroactive sites could be mapped using magnetic force microscopy. The Pt-containing films were used as catalysts for hydrogen peroxide reduction, with a decrease in the reduction potential of 60 mV compared to a Pt film deposited onto bare ITO. By analyzing the mechanisms responsible for hydrogen peroxide reduction, we ascribed the enhanced catalytic activity to synergistic effects between platinum and carbon in the LbL films, which are promising for sensing and fuel cell applications.
