Calcium carbonate is one of the most important biominerals, and it is the main constituent of pearls, seashells, and teeth. The in vitro crystallization of calcium carbonate using different organic matrices as templates has been reported. In this work, the growth of calcium carbonate thin films on special organic matrices consisting of layer-by-layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte films deposited on a pre-formed phospholipid Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has been studied. Two types of randomly coiled polyelectrolytes have been used: lambda-carrageenan and poly(acrylic acid). A precoating comprised of LB films has been prepared by employing a negatively charged phospholipid, the sodium salt of dimyristoilphosphatidyl acid (DMPA), or a zwitterionic phospholipid, namely dimyristoilphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE). This approach resulted in the formation of particulate calcium carbonate continuous films with different morphologies, particle sizes, and roughness, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystalline structure of the calcium carbonate particles was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The randomly coiled conformation of the polyelectrolytes seems to be the main reason for the formation of continuous films rather than CaCO3 isolated crystals. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Multilayered nanocomposite films (thickness 50-90 nm) of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (np-CoFe2O4, 18 nm) were deposited on top of interdigitated microelectrodes by the layer-by-layer technique in order to study their dielectric properties. For that purpose, two different types of nanocomposite films were prepared by assembling np-CoFe2O4 either with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) or with polyaniline and sulfonated lignin. Despite the different film architectures, the morphology of both was dominated by densely-packed layers of nanoparticles surrounded by polyelectrolytes. The dominant effect of np-CoFe2O4 was also observed after impedance spectroscopy measurements, which revealed that dielectric behavior of the nanocomposites was largely influenced by the charge transport across nanoparticle-polyelectrolyte interfaces. For example, nanocomposites containing np-CoFe2O4 exhibited a single low-frequency relaxation process, with time constants exceeding 15 ms. At 1 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor (tan ᵟ) of these nanocomposites were 15 and 0.15, respectively. These values are substantially inferior to those reported for pressed pellets made exclusively of similar nanoparticles. Impedance data were further fitted with equivalent circuit models from which individual contributions of particle's bulk and interfaces to the charge transport within the nanocomposites could be evaluated. The present study evidences that such nanocomposites display a dielectric behavior dissimilar from that exhibited by their individual counterparts much likely due to enlarged nanoparticle- polyelectrolyte interfaces.

Optical and structural properties of planar and channel waveguides based on sol gel Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped SiO2-ZrO2 are reported. Microstructured channels with high homogeneous surface profile were written onto the surface of multilayered densified films deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by a femtosecond laser etching technique. The densification of the planar waveguides was evaluated from changes in the refractive index and thickness, with full densification being achieved at 900 degrees C after annealing from 23 up to 500 min, depending on the ZrO2 content Crystal nucleation and growth took place together with densification, thereby producing transparent glass ceramic planar waveguides containing rare earth-doped ZrO2 nanocrystals dispersed in a silica-based glassy host Low roughness and crack-free surface as well as high confinement coefficient were achieved for all the compositions. Enhanced NIR luminescence of the Er3+ ions was observed for the Yb3+- codoped planar waveguides, denoting an efficient energy transfer from the Yb3+ to the Er3+ ion. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Magnetic nanoparticles are promising for a variety of applications, such as biomedical devices, spin electronics, magnetic data storage media, to name a few. However, these goals may only be reached if stable and organized structures are fabricated. In this article, we report on a single-step synthetic route with the coprecipitation method, in which iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) were stabilized in aqueous media using the poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC) polyelectrolyte. The Fe3O4 NPs had a diameter of ca. 5 nm, according to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, being arranged in an inverse spinel structure typical of magnetite. An investigation with infrared spectroscopy indicated that the mechanisms of stabilization in the polymer matrix were based on the interaction between quaternary amide groups from PDAC and the nanoparticle surface. The Fe3O4-PDAC NPs exhibited considerable magnetic susceptibility, with a monotonic increase in the magnetization with decreasing temperature. These Fe3O4-PDAC NPs were immobilized in layer-by-layer (LbL) films, being alternated with layers of poly(vinylsulfonic acid) (PVS). The LbL films were much rougher than typical films made with polyelectrolytes, and Fe3O4-PDAC NPs have been responsible for the high electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 reduction, with an overpotential shift of 0.69 V. Overall, the stability, magnetic properties and film-forming ability indicate that the Fe3O4-PDAC NPs may be used for nanoelectronics and bioelectrochemical devices requiring reversible and magnetic redox materials.

The search for bioactive molecules to be employed as recognition elements in biosensors has stimulated researchers to pore over the rich Brazilian biodiversity. In this sense, we introduce the use of natural cashew gum (Anacardium occidentale L) as an active biomaterial to be used in the form of layer-by-layer films, in conjunction with phthalocyanines, which were tested as electrochemical sensors for dopamine detection. We investigated the effects of chemical composition of cashew gum from two different regions of Brazil (Piaui and Ceara states) on the physico-chemical characteristics of these nanostructures. The morphology of the nanostructures containing cashew gum was studied by atomic force microscopy which indicates that smooth films punctuated by globular features were formed that showed low roughness values. The results indicate that, independent of the origin, cashew gum stands out as an excellent film forming material with potential application in nanobiomedical devices as electrochemical sensors. The electrochromic behavior of iron complexes derived from tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (TPPZ) and a hexacyanoferrate species in polyelectrolytic multilayer adsorbed films is described for the first time. This complex macromolecule was deposited onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates via self-assembly, and the morphology of the modified electrodes was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicated that the hybrid film containing the polyelectrolyte multilayer and the iron complex was highly homogeneous and was approximately 50 nm thick. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior with both intense and persistent coloration as well as a chromatic contrast of approximately 70%. In addition, this system achieved high electrochromic efficiency (over 70 cm(2) C-1 at 630 nm) and a response time that could be measured in milliseconds. The electrode was cycled more than 10(3) times, indicating excellent stability.

In the field of organic thin films, manipulation at the nanoscale can be obtained by immobilization of different materials on platforms designed to enhance a specific property via the layer-by-layer technique. In this paper we describe the fabrication of nanostructured films containing cobalt tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) obtained through the layer-by-layer architecture and assembled with linear poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM) polyelectrolytes. Film growth was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy following the Q band of CoTsPc and revealed a linear growth for both systems. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the driving force keeping the structure of the films was achieved upon interactions of CoTsPc sulfonic groups with protonated amine groups present in the positive polyelectrolyte. A comprehensive SPR investigation on film growth reproduced the deposition process dynamically and provided an estimation of the thicknesses of the layers. Both FTIR and SPR techniques suggested a preferential orientation of the Pc ring parallel to the substrate. The electrical conductivity of the PAH films deposited on interdigitated electrodes was found to be very sensitive to water vapor. These results point to the development of a phthalocyanine-based humidity sensor obtained from a simple thin film deposition technique, whose ability to tailor molecular organization was crucial to achieve high sensitivity.

The recent biomedical applications of natural rubber (NR) latex, mostly in dry membranes, have motivated research into novel, more noble uses of this low-cost biomaterial. In this article, we provide the first report on the fabrication of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of NR alternated with the polyelectrolytes polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH). Stable (PAH/NR)n and (PEI/NR)n LbL films displayed similar physicochemical properties, but differed in terms of film morphology according to atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data. Most significantly, (PEI/NR)5 LbL films were made of smaller and flattened particles, which were not efficient for the growth and proliferation of normal human fibroblasts (NHF). In contrast, efficient NHF proliferation could be obtained with (PAH/NR)n LbL films, with the fibroblasts exhibiting the expected elongated morphology. Furthermore, cell growth did not occur for cast films of NR, thus demonstrating the suitability of the LbL method for this biologically related application. The differences between the two polyelectrolytes illustrate the importance of the film architecture and morphology, which open the way for exploiting the molecular control inherent in the LbL technique for further applications of NR-containing films.
