We investigate the occurrence of the optical Kerr effect and two-photon absorption when an oil-based magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles colloidal suspension is illuminated with high intensity femtosecond laser pulses. The frequency of the pulses is controlled and the Z-scan technique is employed in our measurements of the nonlinear optical Kerr coefficient (n(2)) and two-photon absorption coefficient (beta). From these values it was possible to calculate the real and imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibility. We observed that increasing the pulse frequency, additional physical processes take place, increasing artificially the absolute values of n(2) and beta. The experimental conditions are discussed to assure the obtention of reliable values of these nonlinear optical parameters, which may be useful in all-optical switching and optical power limiting applications. Femtosecond lasers have been widely used in laser surgery as an instrument for contact-free tissue removal of hard dental, restorative materials, and osseous tissues, complementing conventional drilling or cutting tools. In order to obtain a laser system that provides an ablation efficiency comparable to mechanical instruments, the laser pulse rate must be maximal without causing thermal damage. The aim of this study was to compare the different morphological characteristics of the hard tissue after exposure to lasers operating in the femtosecond pulse regime. Two different kinds of samples were irradiated: dentin from human extracted teeth and bovine femur samples. Different procedures were applied, while paying special care to preserving the structures. The incubation factor S was calculated to be 0.788 +/- 0.004 for the bovine femur bone. These results indicate that the incubation effect is still substantial during the femtosecond laser ablation of hard tissues. The plasma-induced ablation has reduced side effects, i.e., we observe less thermal and mechanical damage when using a superficial femtosecond laser irradiation close to the threshold conditions. In the femtosecond regime, the morphology characteristics of the cavity were strongly influenced by the change of the effective number of pulses. This paper reports the synthesis of Au nanoparticles by 30-fs pulses irradiation of a sample containing HAuCl4 and chitosan, a biopolymer used as reducing agent and stabilizer. We observed that it is a multi-photon induced process, with a threshold irradiance of 3.8 x 10(11) W/cm(2) at 790 nm. By transmission electron microscopy we observed nanoparticles from 8 to 50 nm with distinct shapes. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that the reduction of gold and consequent production of nanoparticles is related to the fs-pulse induced oxidation of hydroxyl to carbonyl groups in chitosan. Tailoring properties of materials by femtosecond laser processing has been proposed in the last decade as a powerful approach for technological applications, ranging from optics to biology. Although most of the research output in this field is related to femtosecond laser processing of single either organic or inorganic materials, more recently a similar approach has been proposed to develop advanced hybrid nanomaterials. Here, we report results on the use of femtosecond lasers to process hybrid nanomaterials, composed of polymeric and glassy matrices containing metal or semiconductor nanostructures. We present results on the use of femtosecond pulses to induce Cu and Ag nanoparticles in the bulk of borate and borosilicate glasses, which can be applied for a new generation of waveguides. We also report on 3D polymeric structures, fabricated by two-photon polymerization, containing Au and ZnO nanostructures, with intense two-photon fluorescent properties. The approach based on femtosecond laser processing to fabricate hybrid materials containing metal or semiconductor nanostructures is promising to be exploited for optical sensors and photonics devices.

One of the clinical limitations of the photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the reduced light penetration into biological tissues. Pulsed lasers may present advantages concerning photodynamic response when compared to continuous wave (CW) lasers operating under the same average power conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate PDT-induced response when using femtosecond laser (FSL) and a first-generation photosensitizer (Photogem) to evaluate the induced depth of necrosis. The in vitro photodegradation of the sensitizer was monitored during illumination either with CWor an FSL as an indirect measurement of the PDT response. Healthy liver of Wistar rats was used to evaluate the tissue response. The photosensitizer was endovenously injected and 30 min after, an energy dose of 150 Jcm-2 was delivered to the liver surface. We observed that the photodegradation rate evaluated via fluorescence spectroscopy was higher for the FSL illumination. The FSL-PDT produced a necrosis nearly twice as deep when compared to the CW-PDT. An increase of the tissue temperature during the application was measured and was not higher than 2.5 °C for the CW laser and not higher than 4.5 °C for the pulsed laser. FSL should be considered as an alternative in PDT applications for improving the results in the treatment of bulky tumors where higher light penetration is required.

We report on the generation of tunable light around 400 nm by frequency-doubling ultrashort laser pulses whose spectral phase is modulated by a sum of sinusoidal functions. The linewidth of the ultraviolet band produced is narrower than 1 nm, in contrast to the 12 nm linewidth of the non-modulated incident spectrum. The influence of pixellation of the liquid crystal spatial light modulator on the efficiency of the phase-modulated second harmonic generation is discussed.

The free-carrier absorption cross-section sigma of a magnetic colloid composed of magnetite nanoparticles dispersed in oil is obtained by using the Z-scan technique in different experimental conditions of the laser beam. We show that it is possible to obtain sigma with picosecond pulsed and millisecond chopped beams with pulse frequencies smaller than about 30 Hz. For higher pulse frequencies, the heating of the colloidal system triggers the appearance of the Soret effect. This effect artificially increases the value of sigma calculated from the experimental results. The limits of the different experimental setups are discussed. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Optical and structural properties of planar and channel waveguides based on sol gel Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped SiO2-ZrO2 are reported. Microstructured channels with high homogeneous surface profile were written onto the surface of multilayered densified films deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by a femtosecond laser etching technique. The densification of the planar waveguides was evaluated from changes in the refractive index and thickness, with full densification being achieved at 900 degrees C after annealing from 23 up to 500 min, depending on the ZrO2 content Crystal nucleation and growth took place together with densification, thereby producing transparent glass ceramic planar waveguides containing rare earth-doped ZrO2 nanocrystals dispersed in a silica-based glassy host Low roughness and crack-free surface as well as high confinement coefficient were achieved for all the compositions. Enhanced NIR luminescence of the Er3+ ions was observed for the Yb3+- codoped planar waveguides, denoting an efficient energy transfer from the Yb3+ to the Er3+ ion. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This work reports on the spectral dependence of both nonlinear refraction and absorption in lead-germanium oxide glasses (PbO-GeO2) containing silver nanoparticles. We have found that this material is suitable for all-optical switching at telecom wavelengths but at the visible range it behaves either as a saturable absorber or as an optical limiter. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic technique mainly applied to the treatment of malignant and pre-malignant lesions, which induces cell death by the combined effect of a photosensitizer, irradiation in a proper wavelength, and molecular oxygen. One of the main limitations of PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is the superficial volume of treatment, mainly due to the limited penetration of topical photosensitization. In this context, the present study investigates if a laser micromachining producing microchannels on the tissue surface could improve ALA penetration and result in an increase in the treatment depth. The laser micromachining under femtosecond regime was performed on the tissue surface of rat livers. Conventional PDT was applied and the induced depth of necrosis with or without laser micromachining was compared. The results showed an increase of more than 20% in the depth of necrosis when the femtosecond laser micromachining was performed before the treatment with the PDT.

The use of laser light to modify the material's surface or bulk as well as to induce changes in the volume through a chemical reaction has received great attention in the last few years, due to the possibility of tailoring the material's properties aiming at technological applications. Here, we report on recent progress of microstructuring and microfabrication in polymeric materials by using femtosecond lasers. In the first part, we describe how polymeric materials' micromachining, either on the surface or bulk, can be employed to change their optical and chemical properties promising for fabricating waveguides, resonators, and self-cleaning surfaces. In the second part, we discuss how two-photon absorption polymerization can be used to fabricate active microstructures by doping the basic resin with molecules presenting biological and optical properties of interest. Such microstructures can be used to fabricate devices with applications in optics, such as microLED, waveguides, and also in medicine, such as scaffolds for tissue growth.

In this study we investigate the singlet excited state absorption of lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc2) over a wide spectral range. It was observed distinct nonlinear absorption behaviors; saturable (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The RSA effect was observed below 640 and above 680 nm, while SA occurs around the Q-band region, located around 660 nm. To describe the main singlet-singlet transitions, we employed the rate equation model considering the simplified three-energy level diagram. Our results reveal a ratio between excited and ground state absorption smaller than 0.05 at the Q-band region, and of approximately 4 for the other regions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The nonlinear index of refraction (n(2)) and the two-photon absorption coefficient (beta) of water-based ferrofluids made of magnetite nanocrystals of different sizes and with different coatings have been measured through the Z-scan technique, with ultrashort (femtoseconds) laser pulses. Their third-order susceptibility is calculated from the values of n(2) and beta. The influence of different particles' coatings and sizes on these nonlinear optical properties are investigated. The values of n(2) and beta depend more significantly on the nanoparticles' size than on the particular coating. We observe a decrease of beta as the nanoparticles' diameters decrease, although the optical gap is found to be the same for all samples. The results are interpreted considering modifications in the electronic orbital shape due to the particles' nanosize effect.

This work reports on the two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-section and first hyperpolarizability of dibenzoylmethane solutions using femtosecond Z-scan and hyper-Rayleigh scattering techniques. The 2PA spectrum, spanning the wavelength range from 460 to 740 nm, presents a band centered at 510 nm, with a cross-section value estimated as 37 GM at this wavelength. Owing to the molecular symmetry, this band is not observed in the linear absorption spectrum. The sum-over-state approach was adopted to evaluate various spectroscopic parameters. Experimental and theoretical values of the first hyperpolarizability values were estimated in ethanol and DMSO solutions.

We report the control of Au nanoparticle (NP) formation by using shaped 30 fs pulses, in a solution containing HAuCl4 and chitosan. By using a sinusoidal spectral phase, a periodic train of pulses is generated. When the period of the pulse train matches certain Raman resonances of chitosan, the reducing agent of the process, an enhancement of the Au NP formation is observed. Theoretical quantum chemical calculations indicate that the outer groups of the chitosan are mostly influenced by low Raman frequencies, which is in reasonably agreement with the experimental data and indicates an enhancement in the Au NP formation as the pulse train period increases (low frequency).
