Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides are compounds that do not occur naturally in the environment and are not easily degraded by chemical or microbiological action. In the present work, those compounds were analysed in unhatched penguin eggs and whole krill collected in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica in the austral summers of 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. The compounds found in higher levels (in a wet weight basis) were, in most of the egg samples, the PCBs (2.53-78.7 ng g(-1)), DDTs (2.07-38.0 ng g(-1)) and HCB (4.99-39.1 ng g(-1)) and after Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, the occurrence seemed to be species-specific for the Pygoscelis genus. In all of the cases, the levels found were not higher than the ones in Arctic birds in a similar trophic level. The krill samples analysis allowed estimating the biomagnification factors (which resulted in up to 363 for HCB, one order of magnitude higher than DDTs and chlordanes and two orders of magnitude higher than the other groups) of the compounds found in eggs, whose only source of contamination is the female-offspring transfer. The Antarctic is a pristine environment that contributes to the maintenance of the global climate equilibrium. The harsh conditions of this habitat are fundamental to selecting those organisms able to survive in such an extreme habitat and able to support the relatively simple ecosystems. The DNA of the microbial community associated with the rhizospheres of Deschampsia antarctica Desv (Poaceae) and Colobanthus quitensis (Kunth) BartI (Caryophyllaceae), the only two native vascular plants that are found in Antarctic ecosystems, was evaluated using a 16S rRNA multiplex 454 pyrosequencing approach. This analysis revealed similar patterns of bacterial diversity between the two plant species from different locations, arguing against the hypothesis that there would be differences between the rhizosphere communities of different plants. Furthermore, the phylum distribution presented a peculiar pattern, with a bacterial community structure different from those reported of many other soils. Firmicutes was the most abundant phylum in almost all the analyzed samples, and there were high levels of anaerobic representatives. Also, some phyla that are dominant in most temperate and tropical soils, such as Acidobacteria, were rarely found in the analyzed samples. Analyzing all the sample libraries together, the predominant genera found were Bifidobacterium (phylum Actinobacteria), Arcobacter (phylum Proteobacteria) and Faecalibacterium (phylum Firmicutes). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first major bacterial sequencing effort of this kind of soil, and it revealed more than expected diversity within these rhizospheres of both maritime Antarctica vascular plants in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, which is part of the South Shetlands archipelago. The larvicidal activity of the neotropical "matico" Piper tuberculatum was evaluated. The secondary compounds were extracted of leaves, stems and mature spikes with fruits and seeds from wild plants and in vitro plants of Piper tuberculatum. The acute toxicities to the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), of extracts of spikes with fruits and seeds and in vitro plants of P tuberculatum were evaluated by means of contact bioassays. Only CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1) and EtOH extracts of mature spikes and CH2C12:MeOH (2:1) extract from in vitro plants showed significant levels of larval mortality. The CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1) and EtOH extracts of mature spikes caused 90% mortality when doses of 0.1850 mg/mu L were applied to the S. frugiperda in 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. The CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1) extract from in vitro plants caused 95% mortality when doses of 0.1850 mg/mu L were too applied in 48 h of exposure. The mature spikes test best results were: LD50 0.001 mg/mu L with EtOH and 0.007 mg/mu L with CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1) and LD90 0.027 mg/mu L with EtOH and 0.103 mg/mu L with CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1); and, in the case of in vitro plants, only CH2Cl2:MeOH (2:1) extract was: LD50 0.003 mg/mu L and LD90 0.060 mg/mu L. The potential value of extracts derived from P. tuberculatum as efficient insecticides against S.frugiperda is discussed.
