This paper presents the results of a study on carbothermal reduction of iron ore made under the microwave field in equipment specially developed for this purpose. The equipment allows the control of radiated and reflected microwave power, and therefore measures the microwave energy actually applied to the load in the reduction process. It also allows performing energy balances and determining the reaction rate with high levels of confidence by simultaneously measuring temperature and mass of the material upon reduction with high reproducibility. We used a microwave generator of 2.45?GHz with variable power up to 3000?W. Self-reducing pellets under argon atmosphere, containing iron ore and petroleum coke, with 3.5?g of mass and 15?mm of diameter were declined. We obtained the kinetic curves of reduction of iron ore and of energy consumption to the process in the maximum electric field, in the maximum magnetic field and at different values of power/mass. The data allow analyzing how the microwave energy was actually consumed in the reduction of ore.

The pathogenic mechanisms involved in migraine are complex and not completely clarified. Because there is evidence for the involvement of nitric oxide (NO) in migraine pathophysiology, candidate gene approaches focusing on genes affecting the endothelial function have been studied including the genes encoding endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). However, investigations on gene-gene interactions are warranted to better elucidate the genetic basis of migraine. This study aimed at characterizing interactions among nine clinically relevant polymorphisms in eNOS (T-786C/rs2070744, the 27 bp VNTR in intron 4, the Glu298Asp/rs1799983, and two additional tagSNPs rs3918226 and rs743506), iNOS (C(-1026)A/rs2779249 and G2087A/rs2297518), and VEGF (C(-2578)A/rs699947 and G(-634)C/rs2010963) in migraine patients and control group. Genotypes were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction using the Taqman(A (R)) allele discrimination assays or PCR and fragment separation by electrophoresis in 99 healthy women without migraine (control group) and in 150 women with migraine divided into two groups: 107 with migraine without aura and 43 with aura. The multifactor dimensionality reduction method was used to detect and characterize gene-gene interactions. We found a significant interaction between eNOS rs743506 and iNOS 2087G/A polymorphisms in migraine patients compared to control group (P < 0.05), suggesting that this combination affect the susceptibility to migraine. Further studies are needed to determine the molecular mechanisms explaining this interaction.

The synthesis and characterization methods of metal nanoparticles (NPs) have advanced greatly in the last few decades, allowing an increasing understanding of structure-property-performance relationships. However, the role played by the ligands used as stabilizers for metal NPs synthesis or for NPs immobilization on solid supports has been underestimated. Here, we highlight some recent progress in the preparation of supported metal NPs with the assistance of ligands in solution or grafted on solid supports, a modified deposition-reduction method, with special attention to the effects on NPs size, metal-support interactions and, more importantly, catalytic activities. After presenting the general strategies in metal NP synthesis assisted by ligands grafted on solid supports, we highlight some recent progress in the deposition of pre-formed colloidal NPs on functionalized solids. Another important aspect that will be reviewed is related to the separation and recovery of NPs. Finally, we will outline our personal understanding and perspectives on the use of supported metal NPs prepared through ligand-assisted methods.

The aim of this work was to perform a systematic study of the parameters that can influence the composition, morphology, and catalytic activity of PtSn/C nanoparticles and compare two different methods of nanocatalyst preparation, namely microwave-assisted heating (MW) and thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors (DPP). An investigation of the effects of the reducing and stabilizing agents on the catalytic activity and morphology of Pt75Sn25/C catalysts prepared by microwave-assisted heating was undertaken for optimization purposes. The effect of short-chain alcohols such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol as reducing agents was evaluated, and the use of sodium acetate and citric acid as stabilizing agents for the MW procedure was examined. Catalysts obtained from propylene glycol displayed higher catalytic activity compared with catalysts prepared in ethylene glycol. Introduction of sodium acetate enhanced the catalytic activity, but this beneficial effect was observed until a critical acetate concentration was reached. Optimization of the MW synthesis allowed for the preparation of highly dispersed catalysts with average sizes lying between 2.0 and 5.0 nm. Comparison of the best catalyst prepared by MW with a catalyst of similar composition prepared by the polymeric precursors method showed that the catalytic activity of the material can be improved when a proper condition for catalyst preparation is achieved. The aim of this study was to investigate the methods adopted to reduce body mass (BM) in competitive athletes from the grappling (judo, jujitsu) and striking (karate and tae kwon do) combat sports in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. An exploratory methodology was employed through descriptive research, using a standardized questionnaire with objective questions self-administered to 580 athletes (25.0 +/- 3.7 yr, 74.5 +/- 9.7 kg, and 16.4% +/- 5.1% body fat). Regardless of the sport, 60% of the athletes reported using a method of rapid weight loss (RWL) through increased energy expenditure. Strikers tend to begin reducing BM during adolescence. Furthermore, 50% of the sample used saunas and plastic clothing, and only 26.1% received advice from a nutritionist. The authors conclude that a high percentage of athletes uses RWL methods. In addition, a high percentage of athletes uses unapproved or prohibited methods such as diuretics, saunas, and plastic clothing. The age at which combat sport athletes reduce BM for the first time is also worrying, especially among strikers.

A new concept for in vitro visual evaluation of sun protection factor (SPF) of cosmetic formulations based on a supramolecular ultraviolet (UV) dosimeter was clearly demonstrated. The method closely parallels the method validated for in vivo evaluation and relies on the determination of the slightest perceptible bleaching of an iron-complex dye/nanocrystallinetitanium dioxide interface (UV dosimeter) in combination with an artificial skin substrate simulating the actual human skin in the presence and absence of a cosmetic formulation. The successful evaluation of SPF was ensured by the similarity of the erythema response of our dosimeter and human skin to UV light irradiation. A good linear correlation of in vitro and in vivo data up to SPF 40 confirmed the effectiveness of such a simple, cheap, and fast method. In short, here we unravel a convenient and accessible visual FPS evaluation method that can help improving the control on cosmetic products contributing to the reduction of skin cancer, one of the critical public health issues nowadays. This paper presents a method for electromagnetic torque ripple and copper losses reduction in (non-sinusoidal or trapezoidal) surface-mount permanent magnet synchronous machines (SM-PMSM). The method is based on an extension of classical dq transformation that makes it possible to write a vectorial model for this kind of machine (with a non-sinusoidal back-EMF waveform). This model is obtained by the application of that transformation in the classical machine per-phase model. That transformation can be applied to machines that have any type of back-EMF waveform, and not only trapezoidal or square-wave back-EMF waveforms. Implementation results are shown for an electrical converter, using the proposed vectorial model, feeding a non-sinusoidal synchronous machine (brushless DC motor). They show that the use of this vectorial mode is a way to achieve improvements in the performance of this kind of machine, considering the electromagnetic torque ripple and copper losses, if compared to a drive system that employs a classical six-step mode as a converter. In this paper we report the electrosynthesis of PVA-protected PtCo films (PVA = poly(vinylalcohol)) and their activities towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). PtCo electrodeposits were potentiostatically obtained in the presence and absence of PVA at distinct potentials. The film morphology and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), which revealed that the use of PVA in the electrodeposition of PtCo films was decisive to achieve better film composition control. Cyclic voltammetry for PVA-protected PtCo films showed that the electrochemical surface area is dependent on the electrodeposition potentials and suggested different adsorption strengths of oxygen-containing species. Films produced in the presence of PVA presented the following activity order towards ORR as a function of the electrodeposition potential (vs. Ag/AgCl): -0.9 V> -0.8 V> -1.0 V> -0.7 V. In contrast, PtCo films electrodeposited in the absence of PVA displayed very similar activities regardless of the electrodeposition potential. The simplicity of the electrodeposition method combined with its effectiveness enabled the production of "model electrodes" for investigating the fundamental aspects of the reactions taking place in the fuel cell cathodes. The aim of this study is to develop a new enzymeless electroanalytical method for the indirect quantification of creatinine from urine sample. This method is based on the electrochemical monitoring of picrate anion reduction at a glassy carbon electrode in an alkaline medium before and after it has reacted with creatinine (Jaffe's reaction). By using the differential pulse voltammetry technique under the optimum experimental conditions (step potential, amplitude potential, reaction time, and temperature), a linear analytical curve was obtained for concentrations of creatinine ranging from 1 to 80 mu mol L-1, with a detection limit of 380 nmol L-1. This proposed method was used to measure creatinine in human urine without the interference of most common organic species normally present in biological fluids (e.g., uric acid, ascorbic acid, glucose, and phosphocreatinine). The results obtained using urine samples were highly similar to the results obtained using the reference spectrophotometric method (at a 95% confidence level). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Dimensionality reduction is employed for visual data analysis as a way to obtaining reduced spaces for high dimensional data or to mapping data directly into 2D or 3D spaces. Although techniques have evolved to improve data segregation on reduced or visual spaces, they have limited capabilities for adjusting the results according to user's knowledge. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to handling both dimensionality reduction and visualization of high dimensional data, taking into account user's input. It employs Partial Least Squares (PLS), a statistical tool to perform retrieval of latent spaces focusing on the discriminability of the data. The method employs a training set for building a highly precise model that can then be applied to a much larger data set very effectively. The reduced data set can be exhibited using various existing visualization techniques. The training data is important to code user's knowledge into the loop. However, this work also devises a strategy for calculating PLS reduced spaces when no training data is available. The approach produces increasingly precise visual mappings as the user feeds back his or her knowledge and is capable of working with small and unbalanced training sets.

We report herein for the first time a facile synthesis method to obtain SrTi1-xFexO3 nanocubes by means by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) method at 140 degrees C. The effect of iron addition on the structural and morphological properties of SrTiO3 was investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements show that all STFO samples present a cubic perovskite structure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Fe absorption K-edge measurements revealed that iron ions are in a mixed Fe2+/Fe3+ oxidation state and preferentially occupy the Ti4+-site. UV-visible spectra reveal a reduction in the optical gap (E-gap) of STFO samples as the amount of iron is increased. An analysis of the data obtained by field emission scanning electron microscopy points out that the nanoparticles present a cubic morphology independently of iron content. According to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy results, these nanocubes are formed by a self-assembly process of small primary nanocrystals.

Barium praseodymium tungstate (Ba1-xPr2x/3)WO4 crystals with (x = 0, 0.01, and 0.02) were prepared by the coprecipitation method. These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinements, Fourier-transform Raman (FT-Raman) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. The shape and size of these crystals were observed by field emission scanning electron microcopy (FE-SEM). Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Moreover, we have studied the photocatalytic (PC) activity of crystals for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinements data, FT-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies indicate that all crystals exhibit a tetragonal structure without deleterious phases. FT-Raman spectra exhibited 13 Raman-active modes in a range from 50 to 1000 cm(-1), while FT-IR spectra have 8 infrared active modes in a range from 200 to 1050 cm(-1). FE-SEM images showed different shapes (bonbon-, spindle-, rice-and flake-like) as well as a reduction in the crystal size with an increase in Pr3+ ions. A possible growth process was proposed for these crystals. UV-vis absorption measurements revealed a decrease in optical band gap values with an increase of Pr3+ into the matrix. An intense green PL emission was noted for (Ba1-xPr2x/3)WO4 crystals (x = 0), while crystals with (x = 0.01 and 0.02) produced a reduction in the wide band PL emission and the narrow band PL emission which is related to f-f transitions from Pr3+ ions. High photocatalytic efficiency was verified for the bonbon-like BaWO4 crystals as a catalyst in the degradation of the RhB dye after 25 min under UV-light. Finally, we discuss possible mechanisms for PL and PC properties of these crystals.

Ceria (CeO2) plays a vital role in emerging technologies for environmental and energy-related applications. The catalytic efficiency of ceria nanoparticles depends on its morphology. In this study, CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method under different synthesis temperatures. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. The X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering results indicated that all the synthesized samples had a pure cubic CeO2 structure. Rietveld analysis and Raman scattering also revealed the presence of structural defects due to an associated reduction in the valence of the Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions caused by an increasing molar fraction of oxygen vacancies. The morphology of the samples was controlled by varying the synthesis temperature. The TEM images show that samples synthesized at 80 degrees C consisted of spherical particles of about 5 nm, while those synthesized at 120 degrees C presented a mix of spherical and rod-like nanoparticles and the sample synthesized at 160 degrees C consisted of nanorods with 10 nm average diameter and 70 nm length. The microwave-assisted method proved to be highly efficient for the synthesis of CeO2 nanoparticles with different morphologies.

Electrothermomechanical MEMS are essentially microactuators that operate based on the thermoelastic effect induced by the Joule heating of the structure. They can be easily fabricated and require relatively low excitation voltages. However, the actuation time of an electrothermomechanical microdevice is higher than the actuation times related to electrostatic and piezoelectric actuation principles. Thus, in this research, we propose an optimization framework based on the topology optimization method applied to transient problems, to design electrothermomechanical microactuators for response time reduction. The objective is to maximize the integral of the output displacement of the actuator, which is a function of time. The finite element equations that govern the time response of the actuators are provided. Furthermore, the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization model and Sequential Linear Programming are employed. Finally, a smoothing filter is implemented to control the solution. Results aiming at two distinct applications suggest the proposed approach can provide more than 50% faster actuators. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this communication, we investigate the effect of different surfactants: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-K40) on the growth process of zinc molybdate (beta-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at 140 degrees C for 8 h. These microcrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns proved that these crystals are monophasic and present a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. FE-SEM images revealed that the surfactants modified the crystal shapes, suggesting the occurrence of distinct crystal growth processes. The CTAB cationic surfactant promotes the hindrance of small nuclei that leads to the formation of rectangle-like crystals, SDS anionic surfactant induces a growth of irregular hexagons with several porous due to considerable size effect of counter-ions on the crystal facets, PVP-K40 non-ionic surfactant allows a reduction in size and thickness of plate-like crystals, while without surfactants have the formation of irregular plate-like crystals. Finally, the PL properties of beta-ZnMoO4 microcrystals were explained by means of different shape/size, surface defects and order-disorder into lattice. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
