A polyacrylamide hydrogel containing the Chelex-100 resin has traditionally been used as the binding agent for the diffusion gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. The Chelex-100 resin, although important for the determination of various transition metals, is unsatisfactory for the determination of alkaline earth metals, particularly Ba. In this paper, a cellulose membrane, treated with phosphate (P81 membrane), was evaluated as a binding agent for DGT devices for the determination of Ba in produced formation water (PEW) samples. In addition, diffusive layers of filter paper (cellulose) were tested to diffuse Ba through the DGT devices. Experiments to evaluate the key variables of the technique (pH, deployment time, and ionic strength/salinity) were performed. The Ba sampled by these DGT devices was measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Aiming to generate information (related to bioavailability of Ba) on the reuse of PEW for irrigation, the determination of Ba in onshore and offshore samples was performed. The new approach was effective for determination of Ba in onshore samples. To determine Ba in offshore samples, it was necessary to use an alternative calibration procedure due to the high NaCl concentration in these samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the classical neurosurgical technique with a new simplified technique for prenatal repair of a myelomeningocelelike defect in sheep. METHODS: A myelomeningocele-like defect (laminectomy and dural excision) was created in the lumbar region on day 90 of gestation in 9 pregnant sheep. Correction technique was randomized. In Group 1 the defect was corrected using the classic neurosurgical technique of three-layer suture (dura mater, muscle and skin closure) performed by a neurosurgeon. In Group 2, a fetal medicine specialist used a biosynthetic cellulose patch to protect the spinal cord and only the skin was sutured above it. Near term (day 132 of gestation) fetuses were sacrificed for pathological analysis. RESULTS: There were two miscarriages and one maternal death. In total, six cases were available for pathological analysis, three in each group. In Group 1, there were adherence of the spinal cord to the scar (meningo-neural adhesion) and spinal cord architecture loss with posterior funiculus destruction and no visualization of grey matter. In Group 2, we observed in all cases formation of a neo-dura mater, separating the nervous tissue from adjacent muscles, and preserving the posterior funiculus and grey matter. CONCLUSION: The new simplified technique was better than the classic neurosurgical technique. It preserved the nervous tissue and prevented the adherence of the spinal cord to the scar. This suggests the current technique used for the correction of spina bifida in humans may need to be reassessed.

Organic-inorganic composite membranes were prepared from membranes of the bio-polymer bacterial cellulose (BC) and organic-inorganic sal composed of nanoparticulate boehmite and epoxi modified siloxane. Bacterial cellulose membranes are obtained in a highly hydrated state (1% cellulose and 99% cellulose) from cultures of Gluconacetobacter xylinus and could be used in the never-dried or in the dried state. Depending on the use of dried or never-dried BC membranes two main kinds of composites were obtained. In the first one dried BC membranes coated with the hybrid sol have lead to transparent membranes displaying a hi-phase structure where the two components could be easily distinguished, with individual structures preserved. A decrease was observed for tensile strength (50.5 MPa) and Young's Modulus (2.8 GPa) when compared to pure BC membrane (112.5 MPa and 12.7 GPa). Elongation at break was observed to increase (2.5% against 1.5% observed for BC). When never-dried BC membranes were used transparent membranes were also obtained, however an improvement was observed for mechanical properties (tensile strength - 116 MPa and Young's Modulus - 13.7 GPa). A lower value was obtained for the elongation at break (1.3%). In the last case the interaction between the two-phases lead to changes in the cellulose crystallinity as shown by X rays diffraction results. Multifunctional transparent membranes displaying the cellulose structure in one side and the boehmite-siloxane structure at the opposite face could find special applications in opto-electronics or biomedical areas taking advantage of the different chemical nature of the two components.
