The objective of this study was to compare the bone repair along a mandibular body osteotomy stabilized with 2.0 mm absorbable and metallic systems. 12 male, adult mongrel dogs were divided into two groups (metallic and absorbable) and subjected to unilateral osteotomy between the mandibular third and fourth premolars, which was stabilized by applying two 4-hole plates. At 2 and 18 weeks, three dogs from each group were killed and the osteotomy sites were removed and divided equally into three parts: the upper part was labelled the tension third (TT), the lower part the compression third (CT), and the part between the TT and CT the intermediary third (IT). Regardless of the treatment system, union between the fragments was observed at 18 weeks and the CT showed more advanced stages of bone repair than the TT. Histometric analysis did not reveal any significant differences among the 3 parts or systems in the distance between bone fragments at 2 weeks. Although at 18 weeks the proportions of newly formed bone did not differ among TT, IT and CT, significantly enhanced bone formation was observed in all sections for the metallic group. The patterns of repair were distinct between treatments.

Shear bond strength between Ni-Cr alloy bonded to a ceramic substrate Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength between a Ni-Cr alloy and a ceramic system submitted or not to thermocycling. Materials and methods: Forty-eight cylinder blocks of Ni-Cr with 3.0 mm diameter by 4.0 mm hight and 48 disc-shaped specimens (7.0 mm in diameter by 2.0 mm thick) composed of ceramic were prepared. The Ni-Cr cylinder blocks were randomised in two groups of 24 specimens each. One group was submitted to air-particle abrasion (sandblasting) with 50 mu m Al2O3 (0.4-0.7 MPa) during 20 s, and the other group was submitted to mechanical retentions with carbide burrs. Each group was subdivided into other two groups (n = 12), submitted or not to thermocycling (500 cycles, 5-55 degrees C). The cylinder blocks were bonded to the disc-shaped ceramic specimens under 10 N of load. The shear bond strengths (MPa) were measured using a universal testing machine at a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min and 200 kgf of load. The data were submitted to statistical analysis (ANOVA and Tukey's test). Results: The air-particle abrasion group exhibited significantly higher shear bond strength when compared to drilled group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Thermocycling decreased significantly the bond strengths for all groups tested.

The new triazene-porphyrin dye 5-(1-(4-phenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)triazene)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin, encompassing a reactive protonated triazene moiety, was prepared starting from meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP), first converting it to the 5-(4-nitrophenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin, then reducing to the 5-(4-aminophenyl)-10,15,20-tri(phenyl) porphyrin intermediate, and reacting with the diazonium salt of 4-nitroaniline; and characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The absorption spectrum of the neutral species resembled the sum of H2TPP and of 1,3-bis(4-nitrophenyl) triazene spectrum, but the deprotonated anionic species showed more delocalized frontier orbitals, behaving as a push-pull system exhibiting triazenide-to-porphyrin charge-transfer transitions.

We estimate the masses of the 1(--) heavy four-quark and molecule states by combining exponential Laplace (LSR) and finite energy (FESR) sum rules known perturbatively to lowest order (LO) in alpha(s) but including non-perturbative terms up to the complete dimension-six condensate contributions. This approach allows to fix more precisely the value of the QCD continuum threshold (often taken ad hoc) at which the optimal result is extracted. We use double ratio of sum rules (DRSR) for determining the SU(3) breakings terms. We also study the effects of the heavy quark mass definitions on these LO results. The SU(3) mass-splittings of about (50-110) MeV and the ones of about (250-300) MeV between the lowest ground states and their 1st radial excitations are (almost) heavy-flavor independent. The mass predictions summarized in Table 4 are compared with the ones in the literature (when available) and with the three Y-c(4260, 4360, 4660) and Y-b(10890) 1(--) experimental candidates. We conclude (to this order approximation) that the lowest observed state cannot be a pure 1(--) four-quark nor a pure molecule but may result from their mixings. We extend the above analyzes to the 0(++) four-quark and molecule states which are about (0.5-1) GeV heavier than the corresponding 1(--) states, while the splittings between the 0(++) lowest ground state and the 1st radial excitation is about (300-500) MeV. We complete the analysis by estimating the decay constants of the 1(--) and 0(++) four-quark states which are tiny and which exhibit a 1/M-Q behavior. Our predictions can be further tested using some alternative non-perturbative approaches or/and at LHCb and some other hadron factories. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Vector mesons may be photoproduced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions when a virtual photon emitted by one nucleus scatters from the other nucleus, emerging as a vector meson. The STAR Collaboration has previously presented measurements of coherent rho(0) photoproduction at center of mass energies of 130 GeV and 200 GeV in AuAu collisions. Here, we present a measurement of the cross section at 62.4 GeV; we find that the cross section for coherent rho(0) photoproduction with nuclear breakup is 10.5 +/- 1.5 +/- 1.6mb at 62.4 GeV. The cross-section ratio between 200 GeV and 62.4 GeV is 4.4 +/- 0.6, less than is predicted by most theoretical models. It is, however, proportionally much larger than the previously observed 15% +/- 55% increase between 130 GeV and 200 GeV.

Follicular estradiol triggers luteolysis in cattle. Therefore, the control of follicle growth and steroidogenesis is expected to modulate luteal function and might be used as an anti-luteolytic strategy to improve embryo survival. Objectives were to evaluate follicular dynamics, plasma concentrations of estradiol and luteal lifespan in Bos indicus and crossbred cows subjected to sequential follicular aspirations. From D13 to D25 of a synchronized cycle (ovulation = D1), Nelore or crossbred, non-pregnant and non-lactating cows were submitted to daily ultrasound-guided aspiration of follicles >6 mm (n = 10) or to sham aspirations (n = 8). Diameter of the largest follicle on the day of luteolysis (7.4 +/- 1.0 vs 9.7 +/- 1.0 mm; mean +/- SEM), number of days in which follicles >6 mm were present (2.3 +/- 0.4 vs 4.6 +/- 0.5 days) and daily mean diameter of the largest follicle between D15 and D19 (6.4 +/- 0.2 vs 8.5 +/- 0.3 mm) were smaller (p <0.01) in the aspirated group compared with the control group, respectively. Aspiration tended to reduce (p< 0.10) plasma estradiol concentrations between D18 and D20 (2.95 +/- 0.54 vs 4.30 +/- 0.55 pg/ml). The luteal lifespan was similar (p > 0.10) between the groups (19.6 +/- 0.4 days), whereas the oestrous cycle was longer (p <0.01) in the aspirated group (31.4 +/- 1.2 vs 21.2 +/- 1.3 days). Hyperechogenic structures were present at the sites of aspiration and were associated with increase in concentration of progesterone between luteolysis and oestrus. It is concluded that follicular aspiration extended the oestrous cycle and decreased the average follicular diameter on the peri-luteolysis period but failed to delay luteolysis.

Aim. This work tested the effect of the addition of Al2O3/GdAlO3 longitudinal fibers in different contents to veneering porcelain of two dental all ceramic systems. Methods: Fibers (0.5 mm diameter) obtained by the Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method were added to bar-shaped specimens made by veneer porcelain (monolayers) or both the veneer and the core ceramic (bilayers) of two all-ceramic systems: In-Ceram Alumina - glass infiltrated alumina composite (GIA) and In-Ceram 2000 AL Cubes - alumina polycrystal (AP) (VITA Zahnfabrik). The longitudinal fibers were added to veneering porcelain (VM7) in two different proportions: 10 or 17 vol%. The bars were divided into nine experimental conditions (n = 10) according to material used: VM7 porcelain monolayers, VM7/GIA, VM7/AP; and according to the amount of fibers within the porcelain layer: no fibers, 10 vol% or 17 vol%. After grinding and polishing the specimens were submitted to a three point bending test (crosshead speed = 0.5 mm/min) with porcelain positioned at tensile side. Data were analyzed by means of one-way ANOVA and a Tukey's test (alpha = 5%). Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was conducted for fractographic analysis. Results. Regarding the groups without fiber addition, VM7/AP showed the highest flexural strength (MPa), followed by VM7/GIA and VM7 monolayers. The addition of fibers led to a numerical increase in flexural strength for all groups. For VM7/GIA bilayers the addition of 17 vol% of fibers resulted in a significant 48% increase in the flexural strength compared to the control group. Fractographic analysis revealed that the crack initiation site was in porcelain at the tensile surface. Cracks also propagated between fibers before heading for the alumina core. Conclusions. The addition of 17 vol% of Al2O3/GdAlO3 longitudinal fibers to porcelain/glass infiltrated alumina bilayers significantly improved its flexural strength. 10 vol% or 17 vol% of fibers inclusion increased the flexural strength for all groups. This work describes the synthesis of a series of sialylmimetic neoglycoconjugates represented by 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole-sialic acid derivatives containing galactose modified at either C-1 or C-6 positions, glucose or gulose at C-3 position, and by the amino acid derivative 1,2,3-triazole fused threonine-3-O-galactose as potential TcTS inhibitors and anti-trypanosomal agents. This series was obtained by Cu(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction ('click chemistry') between the azido-functionalized sugars 1-N(3)-Gal (commercial), 6-N(3)-Gal, 3-N(3)-Glc and 3-N(3)-Gul with the corresponding alkyne-based 2-propynyl-sialic acid, as well as by click chemistry reaction between the amino acid N(3)-ThrOBn with 3-O-propynyl-GalOMe. The 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose and the sialic acid-galactopyranoside showed high Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase (TcTS) inhibitory activity at 1.0 mM (approx. 90%), whilst only the former displayed relevant trypanocidal activity (IC(50) 260 mu M). These results highlight the 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose as a prototype for further design of new neoglycoconjugates against Chagas' disease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The sieve analysis for the Step trial found evidence that breakthrough HIV-1 sequences for MRKAd5/HIV-1 Gag/Pol/Nef vaccine recipients were more divergent from the vaccine insert than placebo sequences in regions with predicted epitopes. We linked the viral sequence data with immune response and acute viral load data to explore mechanisms for and consequences of the observed sieve effect. Methods: Ninety-one male participants (37 placebo and 54 vaccine recipients) were included; viral sequences were obtained at the time of HIV-1 diagnosis. T-cell responses were measured 4 weeks post-second vaccination and at the first or second week post-diagnosis. Acute viral load was obtained at RNA-positive and antibody-negative visits. Findings: Vaccine recipients had a greater magnitude of post-infection CD8+ T cell response than placebo recipients (median 1.68% vs 1.18%; p = 0.04) and greater breadth of post-infection response (median 4.5 vs 2; p = 0.06). Viral sequences for vaccine recipients were marginally more divergent from the insert than placebo sequences in regions of Nef targeted by pre-infection immune responses (p = 0.04; Pol p = 0.13; Gag p = 0.89). Magnitude and breadth of pre-infection responses did not correlate with distance of the viral sequence to the insert (p. 0.50). Acute log viral load trended lower in vaccine versus placebo recipients (estimated mean 4.7 vs 5.1) but the difference was not significant (p = 0.27). Neither was acute viral load associated with distance of the viral sequence to the insert (p>0.30). Interpretation: Despite evidence of anamnestic responses, the sieve effect was not well explained by available measures of T-cell immunogenicity. Sequence divergence from the vaccine was not significantly associated with acute viral load. While point estimates suggested weak vaccine suppression of viral load, the result was not significant and more viral load data would be needed to detect suppression.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate histomorphometrically the effect of alveolex (Propolis 10%) on the repair of bone cavities in the calvaria of rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 5 mm diameter bone defect was made in the calvaria of male Wistar rats using the drill-type trephine. The defects were filled with rhBMP-21Alveolex, rhBMP-2, Alveolex, or coagulum. Twenty-eight animals with seven subjects on each were sacrificed 30 days after surgery and samples were fixed and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections stained by HE (hematoxylin and eosin) were obtained from the calvaria bone defect and analyzed by a differential point-counting method. RESULTS: Group I and II, rhBMP-21Alveolex and rhBMP-2, respectively, presented higher levels of newly formed bone than other groups (P < 0.001). There were not significant differences between groups I and II (P > 0.05). In addition, there was not significant difference between groups III and IV, Control-Coagulum and Alveolex, respectively (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Alveolex has increased the bone repair in calvaria defects of rats when associated to rhBMP-2, however without significant differences for rhBMP-2 isolated group; Alveolex isolated group showed the lowest levels of newly formed bone with no significant differences to coagulum group (control). Study Design. Ex vivo study of the mechanical performance of cylindrical and dual-core pedicle screws after insertion, removal, and reinsertion in the same hole. Objective. To evaluate the effect of repeated use of same screw hole on the insertion torque and the retentive strength of the cylindrical and dual-core screws. Summary of Background Data. Insertion and removal of pedicle screws is sometimes necessary during surgical procedure to assess the integrity of the pilot-hole wall. However, this maneuver may compromise the implant-holding capacity. Methods. Sixty thoracolombar vertebrae (T13-L5), harvested from 10 healthy calves, were used to insert 2 different designs of pedicle screws: cylindrical (5.0-mm outer diameter) and dual-core screws (5.2-mm outer diameter). Three experimental groups were created on the basis of the number of insertions of the screws and 2 subgroups were established according to the core pedicle screw design (dual-core and cylindrical). The insertion torque was measured during initial insertion, second insertion, and third insertion. Pullout screw tests were performed using a universal testing machine to evaluate the pullout strength after initial insertion, second insertion, and third insertion. Results. Significant reductions of 38% in mean insertion torque and 30% in mean pullout strength of dual-core screw were observed between the initial insertion and the third insertion. The cylindrical screw observed significant reductions of 52.5% in mean insertion torque and 42.3% in mean pullout strength between the initial insertion and the third insertion. A reduction of mean insertion torque and pullout strength between the first insertion and the second insertion but without significance was also observed for both types of screws. Conclusion. Insertions and reinsertion of either cylindrical or dual-core pedicle screws have compromised insertion torque and pullout strength of the implants as measured by mechanical tests.

Abstract Background In patients with advanced non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NIC), right-sided cardiac disturbances has prognostic implications. Right coronary artery (RCA) flow pattern and flow reserve (CFR) are not well known in this setting. The purpose of this study was to assess, in human advanced NIC, the RCA phasic flow pattern and CFR, also under right-sided cardiac disturbances, and compare with left coronary circulation. As well as to investigate any correlation between the cardiac structural, mechanical and hemodynamic parameters with RCA phasic flow pattern or CFR. Methods Twenty four patients with dilated severe NIC were evaluated non-invasively, even by echocardiography, and also by cardiac catheterization, inclusive with Swan-Ganz catheter. Intracoronary Doppler (Flowire) data was obtained in RCA and left anterior descendent coronary artery (LAD) before and after adenosine. Resting RCA phasic pattern (diastolic/systolic) was compared between subgroups with and without pulmonary hypertension, and with and without right ventricular (RV) dysfunction; and also with LAD. RCA-CFR was compared with LAD, as well as in those subgroups. Pearson's correlation analysis was accomplished among echocardiographic (including LV fractional shortening, mass index, end systolic wall stress) more hemodynamic parameters with RCA phasic flow pattern or RCA-CFR. Results LV fractional shortening and end diastolic diameter were 15.3 ± 3.5 % and 69.4 ± 12.2 mm. Resting RCA phasic pattern had no difference comparing subgroups with vs. without pulmonary hypertension (1.45 vs. 1.29, p = NS) either with vs. without RV dysfunction (1.47 vs. 1.23, p = NS); RCA vs. LAD was 1.35 vs. 2.85 (p < 0.001). It had no significant correlation among any cardiac mechanical or hemodynamic parameter with RCA-CFR or RCA flow pattern. RCA-CFR had no difference compared with LAD (3.38 vs. 3.34, p = NS), as well as in pulmonary hypertension (3.09 vs. 3.10, p = NS) either in RV dysfunction (3.06 vs. 3.22, p = NS) subgroups. Conclusion In patients with chronic advanced NIC, RCA phasic flow pattern has a mild diastolic predominance, less marked than in LAD, with no effects from pulmonary artery hypertension or RV dysfunction. There is no significant correlation between any cardiac mechanical-structural or hemodynamic parameter with RCA-CFR or RCA phasic flow pattern. RCA flow reserve is still similar to LAD, independently of those right-sided cardiac disturbances.

This study evaluated the effect of artificially accelerated aging (AAA) on the surface hardness of eight composite resins: Filtek Z250, Filtek Supreme, 4 Seasons, Herculite, P60, Tetric Ceram, Charisma, and Filtek Z100. Sixteen specimens were made from the test piece of each material, using an 8.0 × 2.0 mm teflon matrix. After 24 hours, eight specimens from each material were submitted to three surface hardness readings using a Shimadzu Microhardness Tester for 5 seconds at a load of 50 gf. The other eight specimens remained in the artificially accelerated aging machine for 382 hours and were submitted to the same surface hardness analysis. The means of each test specimen were submitted to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p > 0.05), ANOVA and Tukey test (p < 0.05). With regard to hardness (F = 86.74, p < 0.0001) the analysis showed significant differences among the resin composite brands. But aging did not influence the hardness of any of the resin composites (F = 0.39, p = 0.53). In this study, there was interaction between the resin composite brand and the aging factors (F = 4.51, p < 0.0002). It was concluded that notwithstanding the type of resin, AAA did not influence surface hardness. However, with regard to hardness there was a significant difference among the resin brands.
