Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reactivity and polymerization kinetics behavior of a model dental adhesive resin with water-soluble initiator systems. Methods. A monomer blend based on Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using a thioxanthone type (QTX) as a photoinitiator. Binary and ternary photoinitiator systems were formulated using 1 mol% of each initiator. The co-initiators used in this study were ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB), diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (BARB), p-toluenesulfinic acid and sodium salt hydrate (SULF). Absorption spectra of the initiators were measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and the photon absorption energy (PAE) was calculated. The binary system camphorquinone (CQ)/amine was used as a reference group (control). Twelve groups were tested in triplicate. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the polymerization reaction during the photoactivation period to obtain the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (R-p(max)) profile of the model resin. Results. In the analyzed absorption profiles, the absorption spectrum of QTX is almost entirely localized in the UV region, whereas that of CQ is in the visible range. With respect to binary systems, CQ + EDAB exhibited higher DC and R-p(max) values. In formulations that contained ternary initiator systems, the group CQ + QTX + EDAB was the only one of the investigated experimental groups that exhibited an R-p(max) value greater than that of CQ + EDAB. The groups QTX + EDAB + DPIHFP and QTX + DPIHFP + SULF exhibited values similar to those of CQ + EDAB with respect to the final DC; however, they also exhibited lower reactivity. Significance. Water-soluble initiator systems should be considered as alternatives to the widely used CQ/amine system in dentin adhesive formulations. (C) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. The stability of the Glossoscolex paulistus hemoglobin (HbGp), in two iron oxidation states (and three forms), as monitored by optical absorption, fluorescence emission and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies, in the presence of the chaotropic agent urea, is studied. HbGp oligomeric dissociation, denaturation and iron oxidation are observed. CD data show that the cyanomet-HbGp is more stable than the oxy-form. Oxy- and cyanomet-HbGp show good fits on the basis of a two state model with critical urea concentrations at 220-222 nm of 5.1 +/- 0.2 and 6.1 +/- 0.1 mol/L, respectively. The three-state model was able to reveal a subtle second transition at lower urea concentration (1.0-2.0 mol/L) associated to partial oligomeric dissociation. The intermediate state for oxy- and cyanomet-HbGp is very similar to the native state. For met-HbGp, a different equilibrium, in the presence of urea, is observed. A sharp transition at 1.95 +/- 0.05 mol/L of denaturant is observed, associated to oligomeric dissociation and hemichrome formation. In this case, analysis by a three-state model reveals the great similarity between the intermediate and the unfolded states. Analysis of spectroscopic data, by two-state and three-state models, reveals consistency of obtained thermodynamic parameters for HbGp urea denaturation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An exact expression is derived for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within a magneto-dielectric coated sphere, which is irradiated by a plane and time-harmonic electromagnetic wave. Both the spherical shell and core are considered to be dispersive and lossy, with a realistic dispersion relation of an isotropic split-ring resonator metamaterial. We obtain analytical expressions for the stored electromagnetic energies inside the core and the shell separately and calculate their contributions to the total average energy density. The stored electromagnetic energy is calculated for two situations involving a metamaterial coated sphere: a dielectric shell and dispersive metamaterial core, and vice versa. An explicit relation between the stored energy and the optical absorption efficiency is also obtained. We show that the stored electromagnetic energy is an observable sensitive to field interferences responsible for the Fano effect. This result, together with the fact that the Fano effect is more likely to occur in metamaterials with negative refraction, suggest that our findings may be explored in applications.

Betanin is a natural pigment with antioxidant properties used as a food colourant. This work describes the spectrophotometric and chromatographic quantification of betanin (2S/15S) and its epimer isobetanin (2S/15R) in fresh beetroot juice, food-grade beetroot powder and betanin standard diluted in dextrin. Absorption spectra of all three samples were deconvoluted using a mixed three-function model. Food-grade beetroot powder has the largest amount of violet-red impurities, probably formed during processing. The purification of betanin from these complex matrices was carried out by seven different methods. Ion exchange chromatography was the most efficient method for the purification of betanin from all samples; however, fractions contain high amounts of salt. Reversed-phase HPLC as well as reversed-phase column chromatography also produced good results at a much faster rate. The longer retention time of isobetanin when compared to betanin in reversed-phase conditions has been investigated by means of quantum-mechanical methods. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work presents two potential metallo-drugs, the ionic (C17H19FN3O3)(3)[RuCl6]center dot 3H(2)O (1) and the coordination [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O (2) compounds, obtained by the combination of ruthenium(III) and ciprofloxacin in different synthetic conditions. The ESI MS spectrum of 1 displayed a main peak at m/z = 994.6, assigned to the gaseous phase adduct (ciprofloxacin)(3)center dot H+, while 2 featured peaks at m/z 1093.3 and 547.1 ascribed to [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)center dot H+-4H(2)O](+) and [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)center dot 2H(+)-4H(2)O](2+). Thermal analysis corroborated the proposed water content for both complexes. Absorption spectra of the compounds in aqueous medium are dominated by ciprofloxacin transitions in the UV region but displayed weak bands in the visible region, assigned to ligand field transitions. The cyclic voltammograms of 2 exhibited a quasi-reversible process ascribed to the Ru(II)/(III) redox pair at -0.25V (vs. SHE) while 1 displayed this process at -0.11 V, showing that the central ruthenium ion is stabilized in the (III) oxidation state by the coordination to the hard oxygen atoms of ciprofloxacin. The solubility of 1 is pH dependent (as well as free ciprofloxacin) while 2 is fully water soluble and stable under physiological pH for at least 48 h. The compounds are also stable under incubation conditions (stomach pH and 37 degrees C) without significant pH lowering. An interaction study of 2 with ct-DNA showed a value of K-b = 2.47 (+/- 0.89) x 10(4) mol(-1) L for the intrinsic binding constant.
