Microparticles of ketoprofen entrapped in blends of acrylic resins (Eudragit RL 30D and RS 30D) were successfully produced by spray drying. The effects of the proportion ketoprofen : polymer (1: 1 and 1: 3) and of spray-drying parameters (drying gas inlet temperatures of 80 and 100 degrees C; microencapsulating composition feed flow rates of 4 and 6 g/min) on the microparticles properties (drug content, encapsulation efficiency, mean particle size, moisture content, and dissolution behavior) were evaluated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms and X-ray diffractograms of the spray-dried product, the free drug, and the physical mixture between the free drug and spray-dried composition (blank) were carried out. Microparticles obtained at inlet temperature of 80 degrees C, feed flow rate of 4 g/min, and ketoprofen : acrylic resin ratio of 1: 3 presented an encapsulation efficiency of 88.1%, moisture content of 5.8%, production yield around 50%, and a higher reduction in dissolution rate of the entrapped ketoprofen. Sigmoidal shape dissolution profiles were presented by the spray-dried microparticles. The dissolution profiles were relatively well described by the Weibull model, a showing high coefficient of determination, R-2, and a mean absolute error between experimental and estimated values of between 4.6 and 10.1%.

Blending polypropylene (PP) with biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) can be a nice alternative to minimize the disposal problem of PP and the intrinsic brittleness that restricts PHB applications. However, to achieve acceptable engineering properties, the blend needs to be compatibilized because of the immiscibility between PP and PHB. In this work, PP/PHB blends were prepared with different types of copolymers as possible compatibilizers: poly(propylene-g-maleic anhydride) (PPMAH), poly (ethylene-co-methyl acrylate) [P(EMA)], poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(EGMA)], and poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(EMAGMA)]. The effect of each copolymer on the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends was investigated. The results show that the compatibilizers efficiency decreased in this order: P(EMAGMA) > P(EMA) > P(EGMA) > PP-MAH; we explained this by taking into consideration the affinity degree of the compatibilizers with the PP matrix, the compatibilizers properties, and their ability to provide physical and/or reactive compatibilization with PHB. trans-Free interesterified fat was produced for possible usage as a margarine. Palm stearin, coconut oil, and canola oil were used as substrates for chemical interesterification. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of blends of palm stearin, coconut oil, and canola oil submitted to chemical interesterification using sodium methoxide as the catalyst. The original and interesterified blends were examined for fatty acid composition, softening and melting points, solid fat content, and consistency. Chemical interesterification reduced softening and melting points, consistency, and solid fat content. The interesterified fats showed desirable physicochemical properties for possible use as a margarine. Therefore, our result suggested that the interesterified fat without trans-fatty acids could be used as an alternative to partially hydrogenated fat.

The aim of this study was to investigate the improvement of the aqueous solubility of carbamazepine by preparing microstructured ternary solid dispersions using polyoxylglycerides and colloidal silicon dioxide. Microstructured solid dispersions were obtained in a spray dryer. The influence of the spray drying conditions on the properties of the microparticles was investigated using a full 3(2) factorial design in which the factors studied were the silicon dioxide content and the air outlet temperature. The microparticles were thoroughly characterized in terms of yield, solubility, angle of repose, particle size, drug content, moisture content, sorption isotherms, morphology, thermal behavior, infrared spectroscopy and crystallinity. The dissolution rates of carbamazepine and of the microparticles in water were also determined. In general, the microstructured solid dispersions demonstrated good yield, adequate flow and moisture content (<3%), drug recovery (91.98 to 100.22%) and particle size (<142.90 mu m). Thermal and infrared analysis showed that there was no drug interaction during the process. On the other hand, the results of X-ray diffraction evidenced a partial polymorphic modification of carbamazepine. The solubility and dissolution rates of carbamazepine were remarkably improved. Therefore, the results confirm the high potential of the spray drying technique to obtain microstructured ternary solid dispersions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dapsone (DAP) is a synthetic sulfone drug with bacteriostatic activity, mainly against Mycobacterium leprae. In this study we have investigated the interactions of DAP with cyclodextrins, 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP beta CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD), in the presence and absence of water-soluble polymers, in order to improve its solubility and bioavailability. Solid systems DAP/HP beta CD and DAP/beta CD, in the presence or absence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K30) or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), were prepared. The binary and ternary systems were evaluated and characterized by SEM, DSC, XRD and NMR analysis as well as phase solubility assays, in order to investigate the interactions between DAP and the excipients in aqueous solution. This study revealed that inclusion complexes of DAP and cyclodextrins (HP beta CD and beta CD) can be produced in order to improve DAP solubility and bioavailability in the presence or absence of polymers (PVP K30 and HPMC). The more stable inclusion complex was obtained with HP beta CD, and consequently HP beta CD was more efficient in improving DAP solubility than beta CD, and the addition of polymers had no influence on DAP solubility or on the stability of the DAP/CDs complexes.

X-ray single crystal (XSC) and neutron powder diffraction data (NPD) were used to elucidate boron site preference for five ternary phases. Ta3Si1-xBx (x=0.112(4)) crystallizes with the Ti3P-type (space group P4(2)/n) with B-atoms sharing the 8g site with Si atoms. Ta5Si3-x (x=0.03(1); Cr5B3- type) crystallizes with space group 14/mcm, exhibiting a small amount of vacancies on the 4 alpha site. Both, Ta-5(Si1-xBx)(3), X=0.568(3), and Nb-5(Si1-xBx)(3), x=0.59(2), are part of solid solutions of M5Si3 with Cr5B3-type into the ternary M-Si-B systems (M=Nb or Ta) with B replacing Si on the 8h site. The D8(8)-phase in the Nb-Si-B system crystallizes with the Ti5Ga4-type revealing the formula Nb5Si3B1-x (x=0.292(3)) with B partially filling the voids in the 2b site of the Mn5Si3 parent type. The designation of biodiesel as an environmental-friendly alternative to diesel oil has improved its commercialization and use. However, most biodiesel environmental safety studies refer to air pollution and so far there have been very few literature data about its impacts upon other biotic systems, e.g. water, and exposed organisms. Spill simulations in water were carried out with neat diesel and biodiesel and their blends aiming at assessing their genotoxic potentials should there be contaminations of water systems. The water soluble fractions (WSF) from the spill simulations were submitted to solid phase extraction with C-18 cartridge and the extracts obtained were evaluated carrying out genotoxic and mutagenic bioassays [the Salmonella assay and the in vitro MicroFlow (R) kit (Litron) assay]. Mutagenic and genotoxic effects were observed, respectively, in the Salmonella/microsome preincubation assay and the in vitro MN test carried out with the biodiesel WSF. This interesting result may be related to the presence of pollutants in biodiesel derived from the raw material source used in its production chain. The data showed that care while using biodiesel should be taken to avoid harmful effects on living organisms in cases of water pollution. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, the effect of blend composition and previous photodegradation on the biodegradation of polypropylene/ poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PP/PHB) blends was studied. The individual polymers and blends with or without the addition of poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate- co-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(E-MA-GMA)] as a compatibilizer (in the case of 80/20 blend) were exposed to UV light for 4 weeks and their biodegradation was evaluated. The biodegradation of PHB phase within the blends was hindered as PHB was the dispersed phase and PP fibrous particles were observed at the surface of the blend samples after biodegradation. Previous photodegradation lessened PHB biodegradation but enhanced the biodegradation of PP and the blends within the biodegradation time studied. Photodegradation resulted in cracks at the surface of PP and the blends, which probably facilitated the biotic reactions due to an easier access of the enzymes to deeper polymer layers. It also resulted in a decrease of molecular weight of PP phase and formation of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups which were consumed during biodegradation. Size exclusion chromatography analysis revealed that only the short chains of PP were consumed during biodegradation.
