In this study we investigate the singlet excited state absorption of lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc2) over a wide spectral range. It was observed distinct nonlinear absorption behaviors; saturable (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The RSA effect was observed below 640 and above 680 nm, while SA occurs around the Q-band region, located around 660 nm. To describe the main singlet-singlet transitions, we employed the rate equation model considering the simplified three-energy level diagram. Our results reveal a ratio between excited and ground state absorption smaller than 0.05 at the Q-band region, and of approximately 4 for the other regions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. O artigo toma as figuras da legenda e da dublagem como pontos de partida para a exploração das várias formas de estrangeirice no audiovisual. Tais figuras são apenas as marcas mais visíveis e impositivas da maneira como os filmes envolvem questões relacionadas com a diferença, a alteridade e a tradução. Em seguida, o artigo também discute o que pode ser um filme estrangeiro no contexto da globalização e da internacionalização da produção cinematográfica. Enfim, ele invoca o conceito de «cinema com sotaque», ou seja, o cinema criado ao mesmo tempo nos interstícios das formações sociais e das práticas cinematográficas, especialmente nas comunidades exílicas e em situações de diáspora.

We examined the interaction of the cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) tritrpticin (VRRFPWWWPFLRR, TRP3) with Langmuir monolayers of zwitterionic (dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, DPPC, and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine, DPPE) and negatively charged phospholipids (dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid, DPPA, and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol, DPPG). Both surface pressure and surface potential isotherms became more expanded upon addition of TRP3 (DPPE similar to DPPC << DPPA < DPPG). The stronger interaction with negatively charged phospholipids agrees with data for vesicles and planar lipid bilayers, and with AMPs greater activity against bacterial membranes versus mammalian cell membranes. Considerable expansion of negatively charged monolayers occurred at 10 and 30 mol% TRP3, especially at low surface pressure. Moreover, a difference was observed between PA and PG, demonstrating that the interaction, besides being modulated by electrostatic interactions, displays specificity with regard to headgroup, being more pronounced in the case of PG, present in large quantities in bacterial membranes. In previous studies, it was proposed that the peptide acts by a toroidal pore-like mechanism [1,2]. Considering the evidence from the literature that PG shows a propensity to form a positive curvature as do toroidal pores, the observation of TRP3's preference for the PG headgroup and the dramatic increase in area promoted by this interaction represent further support for the toroidal pore mechanism of action proposed for TRP3. Rationale: The primary function of surfactant is to reduce the surface tension at air-liquid interface. In this study, the surface tension behavior of two commercial surfactants, poractant alfa (ChiesiFarmaceuticals,ltaly) and beractant (Abbott Laboratories,USA), were evaluated,using new parameters. Methods: We used a Langmuir film balance (Minitrough,KSV lnstruments,Finland) to measure of surface tension of both poractant alfa and beractant samples. For both samples,we prepared a solution of 1 mg/mdl dissolved in chloroform. The solution (1uL) was applied over a subphase of milli-Q water (175 ml) in the chamber of the balance. The chamber has two moving barriers that can change its surface area between a maximum value of 112.5 cm2 anda minimum value of 22.5 cm2, defining a balance cycle.lhree sample's films were evaluated for each sample, during 20 balance cycles. Here quantify two new variables, which is the mean hysteresis area of the measured curve surface tension of the last 16 balance cycles,defined here as Mean Work Cycle (MWC), and the moment that the surfactant is active in the surface, this measure is defined here as Active Surface Area Critical in the compression (ASACC) and the expansion (ASACE). The test was applied to compare the statistical significance of the results.

Electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions govern most of the properties of supramolecular systems, which is the reason determining the degree of ionization of macromolecules has become crucial for many applications. In this paper, we show that highresolution ultraviolet spectroscopy (VUV) can be used to determine the degree of ionization and its effect on the electronic excitation energies of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4 hydroxyphenylazo)- benzene sulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt] (PAZO). A full assignment of the VUV peaks of these polyelectrolytes in solution and in cast or LbL films could be made, with their pH dependence allowing us to determine the p'K IND. a' using the Henderson-Hasselbach equation. The p'K IND. a' for PAZO increased from ca. 6 in solution to ca. 7.3 in LbL films owing to the charge transfer from PAH. Significantly, even using solutions at a fixed pH for PAH, the amount adsorbed on the LbL films still varied with the pH of the PAZO solutions due to these molecular-level interactions. Therefore, the procedure based on a comparison of VUV spectra from solutions and films obtained under distinct conditions is useful to determine the degree of dissociation of macromolecules, in addition to permitting interrogation of interface effects in multilayer films.
