The relative amounts of amorphous and crystalline ?- and a-phases in polyamide-6 nanocomposites, estimated from the deconvolution of X-ray diffraction peaks using Gaussian functions, correlates with their mechanical, thermomechanical, and barrier properties. The incorporation of organoclay platelets (Cloisite 15A and 30B) induced the crystallization of the polymer in the ? form at expense of the amorphous phase, such that 12 wt % of Cloisite is enough to enhance the mechanical and the thermomechanical properties. However, higher nanofiller loads were necessary to achieve good barrier effects, because this property is mainly dependent on the tortuous path permeation mechanism of the gas molecules through the nanocomposite films. Diclofenac sodium (DS) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is widely prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and post-surgery analgesia. The active pharmaceutical ingredient is the anhydrous form; however, it can also exist in hydrate form. In this context, knowing the properties of the solid state is important and relevant in the pharmaceutical area because they have a significant impact on the solubility, bioavailability, and chemical stability of the drugs. In the present study, data from XRPD, FTIR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were used for the identification and characterization of DS forms (anhydrous and hydrate). An HPLC method was optimized to evaluate the plasma concentration of DS in rabbits. The optimized method exhibited good linearity over the range 0.1-60 mu g/mL with correlation coefficients of >0.9991. The mean recovery was 100%. Precision and accuracy were determined within acceptable limits. Finally, to compare the pharmacological properties of anhydrous and hydrate DS forms, we investigated their effects in the febrile response induced by lipopolysaccharide from E. coli in rabbits. The results show that the antipyretic effect of anhydrous and hydrate DS forms are similar.

Self-supported organic-inorganic hybrid transparent films have been prepared from bacterial cellulose and boehmite. SEM results indicate that the BC membranes are covered by Boehmite and XRD patterns suggest structural changes on cellulose due to Boehmite addition. Thermal stability is accessed through TG curves and is dependent on Boehmite content. Transparency, as evaluated by UV-Vis absorption, increases with increasing content of boehmite suggesting application of these materials as transparent substrates for opto-electronic devices.

We investigated the electrochemical oxidation of glycerol on low-index Pt single crystals in acidic media (H2SO4 and HClO4) by cyclic voltammetry and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and we verified that this is a surface sensitive reaction. Pt(100) and Pt(110) surface structures favor the breaking of the C-C-C bond at low potentials (say 0.05 V), as seen by the formation of CO, one of the adsorbed residues of the glycerol dissociation, which poisons these surfaces even at high potentials. Pt(111) surface structure does not favor the C-C-C bond breaking at potentials as low as 0.05 V. However, Pt(111) is less poisoned by residues of glycerol dissociation and, for this reason, it is more active for glycerol oxidation than Pt(100) and Pt(110) at low potentials. Carbonyl containing compounds and CO2 were detected as reaction products of the glycerol oxidation on all investigated single-crystal Pt surfaces. The ratio between CO2 and carbonyl containing compounds is clearly much higher for Pt(100) and Pt(110) than for Pt(111). (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of feeding dairy cows with organic or inorganic sources of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) on blood concentrations of these minerals, blood metabolic profiles, nutrient intake and milk yield and composition. Nineteen Holstein cows were selected and randomly assigned to two groups for receiving organic (n = 9) or inorganic (n = 10) sources of Zn, Cu and Se from 60 days before the expected date of calving to 80 days of lactation. Samples of feed, orts and milk were collected for analysis. Body condition score (BCS) was determined and blood samples were collected for analysis of Zn, Cu and Se concentrations, as well as for metabolic profile. Supplying organic or inorganic sources of Zn, Cu, and Se did not affect dry matter and nutrient intake, blood metabolic profile, milk yield and composition, plasma concentration of these minerals, and BCS or change the BCS in cows from 60 days before the expected date of calving to 80 days of lactation. An effect of time was observed on all feed intake variables, plasma concentrations of Zn and Se, milk yield, milk protein content, BCS and change in BCS.

This research was conducted with objective to evaluate the effect of different zinc (Zn) sources and doses in the diet for Santa Ines sheep. Forty lambs at weaning, with 18.4 kg of body weight were supplemented with three different sources of zinc (zinc oxide (ZnO), zinc amino acid and zinc proteinate) and three doses of zinc (200, 400 and 600 mg/kg DM) added to the basal diet. At every 28 days, animals were weighted and blood samples were collected for analyses of zinc (Zn), alkaline phosphatase and immunoglobulin G (IgG) and M (IgM). At the end of experiment, liver samples were collected for determination of the hepatic zinc levels. Zinc was analyzed with atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while phosphatase alkaline and immunoglobulins G and M were analyzed using Laborlab and Bioclin kits, respectively. There was no effect of diets on phosphatase alkaline levels and hepatic zinc, but there was difference in the plasmatic zinc levels and IgG and IgM levels. Based on the accumulation of hepatic zinc, the estimate of the zinc bioavailability, through the regression equation, showed that supplementation with organic and inorganic sources of zinc did not differ in the diet of Santa Ines sheep.

The synthesis and photoluminescent properties of Ln(III)-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and dibenzoylmethanate complexes (Ln = Eu(III) and Gd(III) ions) containing tertiary amides such as dimethylacetamide (DMA), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethylbenzamide (DMB) as neutral ligands are reported. The Ln complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration with EDTA, and infrared spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray structure data of the [Eu(DBM)(3).(DMA)] compound indicates that this complex crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group PT with the following cell parameters: a = 10.2580(3) angstrom, b = 10.3843(2) angstrom, c= 22.3517(5) angstrom, alpha = 78.906(2)degrees, beta = 78.049(2)degrees, lambda= 63.239(2)degrees, V= 2066.41(9) angstrom(3), and Z = 2. The coordination polyhedron for the Eu(III) complex may be described as an approximate C-2v distorted monocapped trigonal prism. The optical properties of the Eu(III) complexes were studied based on the intensity parameters and luminescence quantum yield (q). The values of the ohm(2) parameter of the Eu-DBM complexes are larger than those for the Eu-TTA complexes, indicating that the Eu(III) ion is in a more polarizable chemical environment in the former case. The geometries of the complexes have been optimized by using the Sparkle Model, and the results have been used to perform theoretical predictions of the ligand-to-metal energy transfer via direct and exchange Coulomb mechanisms. The sludge generated by sewage treatment which meets regulatory standards can be used in agriculture. With this understanding, the focus of this study is the evaluation of the agricultural characteristics and inorganic substances in excess activated sludge, which was subjected to drying in a greenhouse. The variables (factor) evaluated during the drying process were: type of sludge (digested or not digested), addition of lime to the sludge, and the physical layout and rotation of sludge in the greenhouse. The parameters monitored for this assessment were moisture, volatile solids and pH. The greenhouse cover and sides were made of translucent plastic to allow the penetration of solar radiation and prevent water from entering. A impermeable floor was used. The sludge was generated in sewage treatment plants located in the metropolitan region of Grande Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The solar drying of wastewater sludge in a greenhouse presented satisfactory results.

Nanosized rare earth phosphovanadate phosphors (Y(P,V)O-4:Eu3+) have been prepared by applying the organic-inorganic polymeric precursors methodology. Luminescent powders with tetragonal structure and different vanadate concentrations (0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, and 100%, with regard to the phosphate content) were then obtained for evaluation of their structural and spectroscopic properties. The solids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and infrared), and electronic spectroscopy (emission, excitation, luminescence lifetimes, chromaticity, quantum efficiencies, and Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters). The solids exhibited very intense D-5(0) -> F-7(J) Eu3+ transitions, and it was possible to control the luminescent characteristics, such as excitation maximum, lifetime and emission colour, through the vanadium(V) concentration. The observed luminescent properties correlated to the characteristics of the chemical environments around the Eu3+ ions with respect to the composition of the phosphovanadates. The Eu3+ luminescence spectroscopy results indicated that the presence of larger vanadium(V) amounts in the phosphate host lattice led to more covalent and polarizable chemical environments. So, besides allowing for control of the luminescent properties of the solids, the variation in the vanadate concentration in the obtained YPO4:Eu3+ phosphors enabled the establishment of a strict correlation between the observable spectroscopic features and the chemical characteristics of the powders.

Background Patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) have been shown to present dyspeptic symptoms more frequently than the general population. Some of these symptoms could be related to motility disorders to some degree. Then, we propose to investigate whether gastric emptying of solids in patients with inactive CD is delayed and to determine the relationships between gastric emptying and dyspeptic symptoms in inactive CD. Methods Twenty-six patients with inactive Crohn’s disease, as defined by a Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) < 150, underwent a gastric emptying test by breath test using 13C octanoic acid coupled to a solid meal and answered a validated questionnaire (The Porto Alegre Dyspeptic Symptoms Questionnaire) to assess dyspeptic symptoms. Patients with scores ≥ 6 were considered to have dyspepsia. The control group was composed by 19 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. Results Patients with CD had a significantly longer t 1/2 and t lag (p<0.05) than the controls. CD patients with dyspepsia had significantly (p<0.05) prolonged gastric emptying when compared to patients without dyspeptic symptoms. When the individual symptom patterns were analyzed, only vomiting was significantly associated with delayed gastric emptying (p<0.05). There was no difference between the subgroups of patients with respect to gender, CDAI scores, disease location, clinical behavior (obstructive/obstructive) or previous gastrointestinal surgery. Conclusion Delayed gastric emptying in inactive Crohn’s disease patients seems to be associated with dyspeptic symptoms, particularly vomiting, even without any evidence of gastrointestinal obstruction.

The addition of Cu2+ ions to the classical Fenton reaction (Fe2+ plus H2O2 at pH 3) is found to accelerate the degradation of organic compounds. This synergic effect causes an approximately 15 % additional reduction of the total organic carbon (TOC), representing an overall improvement of the efficiency of the mineralization of phenol. Although Fe2+ exhibits a high initial rate of degradation, the degradation is not complete due to the formation of compounds refractory to the hydroxyl radical. The interference of copper ions on the degradation of phenol by the Fenton reaction was investigated. In the presence of Cu2+, the degradation is slower, but results in a greater reduction of TOC at the end of the reaction (t = 120 min). In the final stages of the reaction, when the Fe3+ in the solution is complexed in the form of ferrioxalate, the copper ions assume the role of the main catalyst of the degradation

High quality KMo4O6 single crystals with tetragonal structure (space group P4/mbm) have been prepared by fused salt electrolysis. The crystals were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry, electrical resistivity, and magnetization measurements. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and SEM have given some information on the growth of single crystals. Electrical resistivity as a function of temperature shows that the KMo4O6 compound is a bad metal with resistivity change of approximately 30% in the temperature range from 2 to 300K. A metal-insulator transition (MIT), observed at approximately 110K, has been also confirmed for this material. Magnetization as a function of temperature agrees with previous report, however a magnetic ordering has been observed in M(H) curves in the whole temperature range.

AIM: The main goal of this research was to investigate the influence of the hydrological pulses on the space-temporal dynamics of physical and chemical variables in a wetland adjacent to Jacupiranguinha River (São Paulo, Brazil); METHODS: Eleven sampling points were distributed among the wetland, a tributary by its left side and the adjacent river. Four samplings were carried out, covering the rainy and the dry periods. Measures of pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity and redox potential were taken in regular intervals of the water column using a multiparametric probe. Water samples were collected for the nitrogen and total phosphorus analysis, as well as their dissolved fractions (dissolved inorganic phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate). Total alkalinity and suspended solids were also quantified; RESULTS: The Multivariate Analysis of Variance showed the influence of the seasonality on the variability of the investigated variables, while the Principal Component Analysis gave rise in two statistical significant axes, which delimited two groups representative of the rainy and dry periods. Hydrological pulses from Jacupiranguinha River, besides contributing to the inputs of nutrients and sediments during the period of connectivity, accounted for the decrease in spatial gradients in the wetland. This "homogenization effect" was evidenced by the Cluster Analysis. The research also showed an industrial raw effluent as the main point source of phosphorus to the Jacupiranguinha River and, indirectly, to the wetland; CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, considering the scarcity of information about the wetlands in the study area, this research, besides contributing to the understanding of the influence of hydrological pulses on the investigated environmental variables, showed the need for adoption of conservation policies of these ecosystems face the increase anthropic pressures that they have been submitted, which may result in lack of their ecological, social and economic functions.

The spectral reflectance of the sea surface recorded using ocean colour satellite sensors has been used to estimate chlorophyll-a concentrations for decades. However, in bio-optically complex coastal waters, these estimates are compromised by the presence of several other coloured components besides chlorophyll, especially in regions affected by low-salinity waters. The present work aims to (a) describe the influence of the freshwater plume from the La Plata River on the variability of in situ remote sensing reflectance and (b) evaluate the performance of operational ocean colour chlorophyll algorithms applied to Southwestern Atlantic waters, which receive a remarkable seasonal contribution from La Plata River discharges. Data from three oceanographic cruises are used, in addition to a historical regional bio-optical dataset. Deviations found between measured and estimated concentrations of chlorophyll-a are examined in relation to surface water salinity and turbidity gradients to investigate the source of errors in satellite estimates of pigment concentrations. We observed significant seasonal variability in surface reflectance properties that are strongly driven by La Plata River plume dynamics and arise from the presence of high levels of inorganic suspended solids and coloured dissolved materials. As expected, existing operational algorithms overestimate the concentration of chlorophyll-a, especially in waters of low salinity (S<33.5) and high turbidity (Rrs(670)>0.0012 sr−1). Additionally, an updated version of the regional algorithm is presented, which clearly improves the chlorophyll estimation in those types of coastal environment. In general, the techniques presented here allow us to directly distinguish the bio-optical types of waters to be considered in algorithm studies by the ocean colour community.
