In this work, we report the construction of potential energy surfaces for the (3)A '' and (3)A' states of the system O(P-3) + HBr. These surfaces are based on extensive ab initio calculations employing the MRCI+Q/CBS+SO level of theory. The complete basis set energies were estimated from extrapolation of MRCI+Q/aug-cc-VnZ(-PP) (n = Q, 5) results and corrections due to spin-orbit effects obtained at the CASSCF/aug-cc-pVTZ(-PP) level of theory. These energies, calculated over a region of the configuration space relevant to the study of the reaction O(P-3) + HBr -> OH + Br, were used to generate functions based on the many-body expansion. The three-body potentials were interpolated using the reproducing kernel Hilbert space method. The resulting surface for the (3)A '' electronic state contains van der Waals minima on the entrance and exit channels and a transition state 6.55 kcal/mol higher than the reactants. This barrier height was then scaled to reproduce the value of 5.01 kcal/mol, which was estimated from coupled cluster benchmark calculations performed to include high-order and core-valence correlation, as well as scalar relativistic effects. The (3)A' surface was also scaled, based on the fact that in the collinear saddle point geometry these two electronic states are degenerate. The vibrationally adiabatic barrier heights are 3.44 kcal/mol for the (3)A '' and 4.16 kcal/mol for the (3)A' state. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4705428]

All doublet and quartet electronic states correlating with the first dissociation channel of SeCl and some Rydberg states are investigated theoretically at the CASSCF/MRCI level of theory using extended basis sets, including the contribution of spin-orbit effects. The similarity of the potential energy curves with those of SeF suggests that spectroscopic constants for the ground (X (2)Pi) and the first excited quartet (a(4)Sigma) of SeCl could also be determined via an emission resulting from the reaction of selenium with atomic chlorine. The coupling constant of the ground state at R-e is estimated as -1610 cm (1). The potential energy curves calculated and the derived spectroscopic constants do not support the interpretation and assignment of the scarce transitions recorded experimentally as due to (2)Pi-(2)Pi emissions. That the few observed lines might arise from transitions from the state b(4)Sigma(-)(1/2) to a very high vibrational level of the state a(4)Sigma(-)(1/2) is an open possibility, however, the number of vibrational states and the calculated Delta G(1/2) differ significantly from the reported ones. Positronium formation in the bimary molecular solid solutions Tb1-xEux (dpm)(3) (dpm = dipivaloylmethanate) has been investigated. A strong linear correlation between the D-5(4) Tb(III) energy level excited state lifetime and the positronium formation probability has been observed. This correlation indicates that the ligand-to-metal charge transfer LMCT states act in both luminescence quenching and positronium formation inhibition, as previously proposed. A kinetic mechanism is proposed to explain this correlation and shows that excited electronic states have a very important role in the positronium formation mechanism.

We performed an ab initio investigation on the properties of rutile tin oxide (SnOx) nanowires. We computed the wire properties determining the equilibrium geometries, binding energies, and electronic band structures for several wire dimensions and surface facet configurations. The results allowed us to establish scaling laws for the structural properties, in terms of the nanowire perimeters. The results also showed that the surface states control most of the electronic properties of the nanowires. Oxygen incorporation in the nanowire surfaces passivated the surface-related electronic states, and the resulting quantum properties and scaling laws were fully consistent with electrons confined inside the nanowire. Additionally, oxygen incorporation in the wire surfaces generated an unbalanced concentration of spin up and down electrons, leading to magnetic states for the nanowires.

The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. Rate coefficients for the radiative association of titanium and oxygen atoms to form the titanium monoxide (TiO) molecule are estimated. The radiative association of Ti(F-3) and O(P-3) atoms is dominated by an approach along the C-3 Delta potential energy curve, accompanied by spontaneous emission into the X-3 Delta ground state of TiO. For temperatures ranging from 300-14 000 K, the total rate coefficients are found to vary from 4.76 x 10(-17) to 9.96 x 10(-17) cm(3) s(-1), respectively.

In this report, we investigate the polarization effect (linear, elliptical and circular) on the two-photon absorption (2PA) properties of a chiral compound based in azoaromatic moieties using the femtosecond Z-scan technique with low repetition rate and low pulse energy. We observed a strong 2PA modulation between 800 nm and 960 nm as a function the polarization changes from linear through elliptical to circular. Such results were interpreted employing the sum-over-essential states approach, which allowed us to model the 2PA circular-linear dichroism effect and to identifier the overlapping of the excited electronic states responsible by the 2PA allowed band. Electronic states of a new molecular species, SiAs, correlating with the three lowest dissociation channels are characterized at a high-level of theory using the CASSCF/MRCI approach along with quintuple-xi quality basis sets. This characterization includes potential energy curves, vibrational energy levels, spectroscopic parameters, dipole and transition dipole moment functions, transition probabilities, and radiative lifetimes. For the ground state (X-2 Pi), an assessment of spin-orbit effects and the interaction with the close-lying A(2)Sigma(+) state is also reported. Similarities and differences with other isovalent species such as SiP and CAs are also discussed.

A new molecular species, MgAs, is investigated theoretically for the first time at the CASSCF/MRCI level using quintuple-zeta quality basis sets. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying electronic states are presented as well as the associated spectroscopic constants. Dipole and transition moment functions for selected states complement this characterization. Estimates of transition probabilities and radiative life-times for the most important transitions are also reported. The effect of spin-orbit interactions is clearly reflected on the potential energy curves. Comparisons with BeAs, BeN, and BeP are made where pertinent. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The lowest singlet and triplet states of AlP3, GaP3 and BP3 molecules with C-s, C-2v and C-3v symmetries were characterized using the B3LYP functional and the aug-cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVQZ correlated consistent basis sets. Geometrical parameters and vibrational frequencies were calculated and compared to existent experimental and theoretical data. Relative energies were obtained with single point CCSD(T) calculations using the aug-cc-pVTZ, aug-cc-pVQZ and aug-cc-pV5Z basis sets, and then extrapolating to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The studies of niobium after electrochemical polishing EP in sulfuric-methanesulfonic acid mixture were performed. The NbOx/Nb surface was studied by SEM/EDX and XPS methods to find out the chemical composition of the oxygen-induced structures. Specifically the XPS results obtained after EP treatment indicate prevailing part of oxygen with niobium oxides on the sample surface. In order to correctly interpret these structures the photoelectron spectra of main niobium oxides were analyzed, and the spectra of internal Nb 3d and O 1s electronic states and valence band spectra were measured for them. Ruthenium complexes including nitrosyl or nitrite complexes are particularly interesting because they can not only scavenge but also release nitric oxide in a controlled manner, regulating the NO-level in vivo. The judicious choice of ligands attached to the [RuNO] core has been shown to be a suitable strategy to modulate NO reactivity in these complexes. In order to understand the influence of different equatorial ligands on the electronic structure of the Ru-NO chemical bonding, and thus on the reactivity of the coordinated NO, we propose an investigation of the nature of the Ru-NO chemical bond by means of energy decomposition analysis (EDA), considering tetraamine and tetraazamacrocycles as equatorial ligands, prior to and after the reduction of the {RuNO}(6) moiety by one electron. This investigation provides a deep insight into the Ru-NO bonding situation, which is fundamental in designing new ruthenium nitrosyl complexes with potential biological applications.

We present a detailed theoretical study of the stability of the gas-phase diatomic dications SnF2+, SnCl2+, and SnO2+ using ab initio computer calculations. The ground states of SnF2+, SnCl2+, and SnO2+ are thermodynamically stable, respectively, with dissociation energies of 0.45, 0.30, and 0.42 eV. Whereas SnF2+ dissociates into Sn2+ + F, the long range behaviour of the potential energy curves of SnCl2+ and SnO2+ is repulsive and wide barrier heights due to avoided crossing act as a kind of effective dissociation energy. Their equilibrium internuclear distances are 4.855, 5.201, and 4.852 a(0), respectively. The double ionisation energies (T-e) to form SnF2+, SnCl2+, and SnO2+ from their respective neutral parents are 25.87, 23.71, and 25.97 eV. We combine our theoretical work with the experimental results of a search for these doubly positively charged diatomic molecules in the gas phase. SnO2+ and SnF2+ have been observed for prolonged oxygen (O-16(-)) ion beam sputtering of a tin metal foil and of tin (II) fluoride (SnF2) powder, respectively, for ion flight times of about 10(-5) s through a magnetic-sector mass spectrometer. In addition, SnCl2+ has been detected for O-16(-) ion surface bombardment of stannous (tin (II)) chloride (SnCl2) powder. To our knowledge, SnF2+ is a novel gas-phase molecule, whereas SnCl2+ had been detected previously by electron-impact ionization mass spectrometry, and SnO2+ had been observed before by spark source mass spectrometry as well as by atom probe mass spectrometry. We are not aware of any previous theoretical studies of these molecular systems. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4758475]

A low energy electron may attach to a molecule, forming a metastable resonance, which may dissociate into a stable anion and a neutral radical. Chloromethane has been a good target for dissociative electron attachment studies, since it is a small molecule with a clear dissociative ‘sigma*’ shape resonance. We present potential energy curves for CH3Cl and its anion, as a function of the C-Cl distance. Due to the resonant nature of the anion, a correct description requires a treatment based on scattering calculations. In order to compute elastic cross sections and phase shifts we employed the Schwinger multichannel method, implemented with pseudopotentials of Bachelet, Hamann and Schlüter, at the static-exchange plus polarization approximation. At the equilibrium geometry, the resonance was found arround 3.3 eV, in accordance to experience. The incoming electron is captured by a ‘sigma*’ orbital located at the C-Cl bond, which will relax in the presence of this extra electron. We took this bond as the reaction coordinate, and performed several scattering calculations for a series of nuclear conformations. The phase shift obtained in each calculation was fitted by a two component function, consisting in the usual Breit-Wigner profile, which captures the resonant character, and a second order polynomial in the wave number, which accounts for the background contribution. That way, we obtained position and width of the resonance, which allowed us to build the potential energy curve. For larger distances, the anion becomes stable and usual electronic structure calculations suffice. Furthermore, the existence of a dipole-bound anion state is revealed when we employed a set of very diffuse functions. The knowledge on the behaviour of the neutral and anionic electronic states helps us in elucidating how the dissociation takes place.

The respiration of metal oxides by the bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens requires the assembly of a small peptide (the GS pilin) into conductive filaments termed pili. We gained insights into the contribution of the GS pilin to the pilus conductivity by developing a homology model and performing molecular dynamics simulations of the pilin peptide in vacuo and in solution. The results were consistent with a predominantly helical peptide containing the conserved a-helix region required for pilin assembly but carrying a short carboxy-terminal random-coiled segment rather than the large globular head of other bacterial pilins. The electronic structure of the pain was also explored from first principles and revealed a biphasic charge distribution along the pilin and a low electronic HOMO-LUMO gap, even in a wet environment. The low electronic band gap was the result of strong electrostatic fields generated by the alignment of the peptide bond dipoles in the pilin's alpha-helix and by charges from ions in solution and amino acids in the protein. The electronic structure also revealed some level of orbital delocalization in regions of the pilin containing aromatic amino acids and in spatial regions of high resonance where the HOMO and LUMO states are, which could provide an optimal environment for the hopping of electrons under thermal fluctuations. Hence, the structural and electronic features of the pilin revealed in these studies support the notion of a pilin peptide environment optimized for electron conduction.
