Letters from William Tudor to John Thornton Kirkland,

Three letters, one in which Tudor suggests persuading the Episcopal Church to send a bishop to reside in Cambridge and establish a divinity professorship as a means to attract students from other states who are wary of Unitarianism. Tudor also makes inquiries regarding the title of Doctor for a Reverend Chaplin and asks about college records of James Otis.

Two letters thanking Tudor for sending Peruvian mineral specimens to Harvard and requesting he send additional mineral and fossils, as well as reports on other "natural phenomena" for publication.

Letter from Samuel Willard, Lancaster, Massachusetts to Catherine Willard, Petersham, Massachusetts, June 18, 1799

Willard asks his sister to bring some of his clothes to a tailor, and also to make him a pair of linen gloves, and to send him various items from home, including books, a jacket, and a hat.

Willard explains that the town of Deerfield has asked him to stay and preach for an extra six weeks, but he consented to stay four. He also asks his sister if she can send him some of his sermons.

Correspondence describing a distemper he was suffering from and requesting Winthrop send him medicine and instructions for taking it.

Correspondence thanking Winthrop for care he had given to Andrewes' daughter Abigail at his New London home and providing directions for delivering her home. He later writes asking Winthrop send medicine after she developed a cough and pain in her back and left side.

Bliss, Nathaniel, 1622-1654, autographed letter signed to John Winthrop; Springfield, Mass., 1 side (2 pages), 1652 December 21

Correspondence regarding an illness Bliss was suffering; he writes that the medicines Winthrop had given him were ineffective and he has been suffering fits. The letter, which was finished in an unknown hand, reports further symptoms had developed, including headache and blindness, and requests Winthrop again send instructions for taking the medicine he originally sent Bliss, and any other medicine he would recommend.

Correspondence requesting a consultation with Winthrop regarding an illness of his daughter. He also asks Winthrop send his wife medicine for her edema.

Winthrop, John, 1606-1676, autographed letter signed (copy) to Richard Odell; Pequot, Conn., 1 side (4 pages), 1652 November 27

Copy of correspondence responding to a November 16, 1652, letter from Odell regarding his daughter's illness, which Winthrop speculates is hemiplegia. According to Winthrop, "The cure depends upon the knowledge of the right cause, and not only that but the constand and due aplication of such things as may conduce them thereto, which is difficult to doe at a distance." Winthrop further writes that he did not at present have medicine to send for her condition, but recommends "some general things that might be helpfull." These included keeping the child warm with fox or rabbit furs, an ointment consisting of herbs, wax, castor oil, worm grease, fox grease, or an ointment of balsam. Winthrop writes he has sent an ointment, but does not specify its ingredients. His other suggestions for treatment include cupping without scarification, and an decoction containing sarsaparilla, guaiacum, and spirit of rosemary.

Letter from Lemuel Shaw to Susanna Shaw, January 3, 1797

This single page handwritten letter was sent from Lemuel Shaw to his mother, Susanna, during his freshman year at Harvard. In the letter, he requested that his mother wash and return his dirty laundry and send him clothes, including a pair of overalls, some neck-handkerchiefs, and a new hat. Shaw also asked for money to be sent to pay off his debt of $21.25 to Mr. Richard Hunnewell for board and rent, $18.93 for the previous quarter’s bill, and $1.15 for Mr. Timothy Alden, the College Butler.
