Beyond the plains [videorecording]: histoire exemplaire d'un africain ordinaire

Shows the traditional world of the Masai as it is confronted by the westernized, modern world by telling the life story of a young Masai. Dramatized scenes show his early life in a village, his school days and his present position as a university lecturer.

Valedictory poem delivered in the Chapel of Harvard University on the 21 June 1796: in the presence of the President Proffers & Tutors & the four classes of understudents at the request of the class who completed their college studies on that day

Handwritten draft of the Charles P. Sumner’s valedictory poem to the Harvard class of 1796, in a 19th century hardcover binding beginning “The youth by adverse fortune forced to roam…”. The poem mentions John Russell, a member of the Class of 1796 who died in November 1795. The copy includes edits and struck-out words.

Hope: a poem delivered at an exhibition in Cambridge, July 10, 1800

This four-page handwritten poem was composed by Harvard student Joseph Mansfield for a College exhibition on July 8, 1800. The poem begins, "I am not blesd, but may hereafter be; / Who knows what fortune has in store for me?" and concludes with verses about the American Revolutionary War and George Washington.

Letters from William Tudor to his mother, Delia Jarvis Tudor,

Four letters written to his mother while she was traveling in Europe with sister Delia. He provides updates on the well being and activities of his siblings and father, including a coal mining venture undertaken by brother Frederic at Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard. He also reports on the "miserable" state of the family’s finances and suggests marrying sister Delia to an Englishman with a fortune.
