This bookplate indicates that the scrapbook was donated to the library by Edward L. Pierce in June 1893; it is not known who assembled the scrapbook, although it was presumanly either Pierce or the younger Sumner.

Oratio valedictoria, 1714

Paper notebook containing a valedictory oration composed by Thomas Foxcroft. The title page is inscribed, "Thomas Foxcroft Ejus Charta Ad Martii [jes]. 1717."

A. Greek Testament, 1768

Leather-hardcover volume containing an interleaved and annotated copy of a Greek Testament. The printed text is in Greek, but most of Pearson's notes are in English and discuss or translate the text. The inside front cover is inscribed "E. Pearson 1768." There is no title page or imprint information.

An oration, Thaddeus M Harris A.M. now minister of Dorchester, 1790

This small paper notebook contains a twenty-one-page handwritten oration on learned societies delivered by Phi Beta Kappa member Thaddeus Mason Harris on September 1, 1790. The oration is followed by five pages of "notes and illustrations" on the text. Title transcribed from title page. Item bound in blue-and-white floral wallpaper covers.

Annotated almanac, 1743

Almanac containing calendar pages with sporadic annotations of unidentified measurements and interleaved pages with short handwritten entries about Winthrop's daily activities, and astronomical and meteorological observations. The entries include personal notes about travel, the weather, occasional alcohol consumption, and deaths in the community including a Latin note of the death of Winthrop's father (October 2) . There is an entry listing burials and baptisms in Boston, and a note that "Fever & fluxes prevail this month & prove very mortal" (September).

Almanac containing calendar pages with sporadic annotations of unidentified measurements and interleaved pages with short handwritten entries about Winthrop's daily activities, and astronomical and meteorological observations. The entries include personal notes about travel, the weather, deaths in the community, notes of public fasts for the Louisbourg expedition (February 28) and the "Indian war" (September 19), and a note of the surrender of Louisbourg (June 17). There is an entry listing the burials and baptisms in Boston by month, with the deaths subdivided for white and black individuals, and notes of "French prisoners" for July and "Fever & flux" for September.

The entries include personal notes about travel, his wife's travels, the weather, vegetable planting, the hiring and dismissal of servants, and the birth of Winthrop's son Adam (November 1748).

Annotated almanac, 1773

Almanac with minimal and sporadic annotations on the calendar pages by John Winthrop. The title page is inscribed "Man wants but little here below, / nor wants that little long" in Winthrop's hand. There are a few entries noting household activities and the weather including a drought.

Annotated almanac, 1758

Almanac containing sporadic annotations and entries in the hands of John and Hannah Winthrop on both the calendar pages and three additional leaves. Hannah Winthrop's entries include notes on the weather, deaths in the community, and amounts of "Island butter." An entry with burial statistics for the first parish in Cambridge appears to be the only entry in John Winthrop's hand.

Almanac interleaved with entries by John Winthrop and with sporadic annotations on the calendar pages. The interleaved pages include entries on the weather, scientific observations, and almost daily notes of social activities and engagements during the year.

Modern hardcover binding around original handsewn paper binding. Missing title page and first page of text. Key to abbreviations titled "Explination" on flyleaf with abbreviations for Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Long Island, New York, Martha's Vineyard, New Jersey, Pensylvania [sic], Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, West Indies, Great Britain, Episcopalian, and Baptist. Heavily annotated with residence locations. Asterisks added next to the names of alumni who died after the Catalogue's publication, generally in 1795. Also includes a tipped-in page at front of volume with the names of thirteen alumni of various classes from 1650 through 1756, in one hand, a note "Joseph Lovett was of Beverly, and a minister in a town of Connecticut the name of which I do not recollect. JW" in a different hand, and a final note "I believe there was a Lovett at Norwich" in the original hand.

Handmade tabs with class years are cut into the right edge of the catalog pages. Asterisks are added next to the names of alumni who died after the Catalogue's publication.

Covered in torn 1802 magazine print; title page missing. Handwritten note on top of first page: "Catalogue of the men Educated at Harvard College." Infrequent annotations in an unknown hand, typically noting alumni who became governors, or who held other high public offices. There are some annotations with places of residence.

An Oration Delivered on the eighth day of May one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine. At the Funeral of the Hon'ble John Winthrop..., 1779-1780

Small pamphlet bound in brown paper containing a handwritten nine-page copy of Stephen Sewall's funeral oration for Hollis Professor Mathematics and Natural Philosophy John Winthrop delivered May 8, 1779. The title page includes the inscription: "The lips of the wise disperse knowledge,/ A Man shall be comended [sic] according to his Wisdom -- Solomon."
