[Forensic dispute on thinking and the soul], undated

One folio-sized leaf containing a handwritten essay responding to an unidentified opponent's claims that "thinking is essential to the soul." The response begins with the introduction, "In the consideration of this question, I shall only examine one or two of the most material objects of our antagonist." The verso is inscribed: "2d Forensic. not read."

One-page sheet with handwritten essay titled, "Know then thyself, presume not God to scan, The proper study of mankind is man," composed by graduate Ward Cotton for the July 17, 1793 Harvard University Commencement. The essay begins with the quote "'Man is a being composed of an organized body, and a rational soul.'"

Latin exercise book of James Baker, 1759-1760

Small notebook kept by James Baker in the late 1750s; the dates 1755, 1756, and 1758 were written in the book. The volume contains Latin theses, Latin translations from the Book of Genesis, and three pages of English text recording an argument about the soul. The notebook has a string binding and pages of different size. The text does not appear to follow a system of organization and includes scribbles and struck-out words.

The Soul never sleeps, 1761

Three-page handwritten composition in English beginning, "One would think that by this Time our opponents should be pretty near silenced..." The document is a draft with edits and struck-through words and the verso includes the handwritten title, "Argument at a forensic Disputation 1761."
