Memoranda Medica of John Perkins, 1750-1773 (inclusive)

Contains notes written by Dr. John Perkins (1698-1781) from 1750 to 1773 on physiology, materia medica, and illness, including symptoms, causes, and treatment of conditions like mumps, dysentery, dropsy, and rheumatism. Also includes observations on children and on various bodily functions. There is an index at the end of the volume.

[Admittatur of John Capen], 1836

Printed copy of the 1833 abstract of laws and regulations with the admittatur of undergraduate John Capen signed by President Josiah Quincy on August 30, 1836. The admittatur also includes a certificate of removal from probation signed December 20, 1836.

Captain Mulford's list of writings left in his hands for the publick, ca. 1708

List includes "Our originall deed with the Indians and counterbond" and "Governor Lovelace's confirmation...." One of the listed items, "The testimony of Robert Hudson, Benjamin Smith and John Shaw," is included in HU ALP4671.

An abridgment of what I extracted while an undergraduate at Harvard College, 1766-1769

The bound volume contains excerpts copied by Benjamin Wadsworth from books he read as a student at Harvard in the late 1760s. The volume includes almost no personal commentary on the readings. The excerpts are arranged by year of study for the academic years 1766-1769, beginning when Wadsworth was a sophomore. Each entry begins with a title indicating the book title and author for the passage, and there is an alphabetical index at the end of the volume. Wadsworth selected “extracts” from both religious and secular texts including several histories of England, American histories (with a focus on Puritans), the Bible, and in his senior year, “the Koran of Mohammed.” He also read several books on the art of speech and the art of preaching. There are few science texts included, though the final five-page entry is titled, “What I thought fit to note down from Mr. Winthrop’s experimental Lectures” and contains notes both on the content of Professor John Winthrop’s lectures as well as the types of experiments being performed in class. Wadsworth’s commonplace book offers a window on the state of higher education in the eighteenth century and offers a firsthand account of academic life at Harvard College.

The hand-sewn notebook contains a 24-page manuscript draft of the second Dudleian lecture, delivered by John Barnard on June 23, 1756. The copy includes a small number of edits and struck-out words adopted in the printed version published by J. Draper of Boston in 1756. The sermon begins with the Biblical text Mark 14:61, 62. The covers are no longer with the item.

The Lawes and Orders of Harvard Colledge, 1655-1708

The 21-page handwritten copy of the College laws is laid out in two columns, and lacks a cover. In the left-hand column, in an unidentified hand, are the Laws of 1655 in English with additions dated April 9, 1660, August 24, 1663, and December 5, 1667, and an order of the General Court dated Sept. 4, 1656. In the right-hand column, in the hand of President John Leverett, are the Latin Laws of 1642-1646, with an occasional reference to the Latin Laws of 1686 and 1692, and two extracts from the Corporation records about the reading of the Scriptures dated January 26 and May 27, 1708.

Records of the Geographical Society, ca. 1796

This small blue-covered paper notebook contains four leaves with the handwritten records of the Geographical Society, an undergraduate organization at Harvard in the late 1790s. The records consist of ten handwritten "Laws of the Geographical Society" and a short list of fines dispensed on October 7th. A list of six student surnames is written on a scrap of paper and attached with pins to the notebook's inside front cover. The surnames likely correspond to six members of the Harvard Class of 1798: John Abbot (1777-1854), Isaac Adams (d. 1807), Francis Brigham (d. November 14, 1796), Humphrey Devereux (1779-1867), Joseph Emerson (1777-1833), and Artemas Sawyer (d. 1826). The notebook is undated but was presumably kept in 1795 or 1796 around the time of Brigham's death on November 14, 1796. While Brigham's surname appears in the list of fines, it is crossed out on the inside front cover.

Letter of attorney, 1767

Document empowering John Harvey and Samuel Johnston to act as Barker's representatives to recover a debt from the estate of Dr. John Craven of North Carolina and to settle Barker's affairs and dispose of his property in North Carolina. Dated 23 May 1767.

Student notebook of James Blake on Hebrew grammar, 1767

A small paper notebook containing eight-pages of English notes on Hebrew grammar and Hebrew script written by Harvard undergraduate James Blake in 1767. The title of the first page, "Of Nouns," is annotated with the note, "Benj'm Wadsworth, 1767" and the recto of the back cover contains a personal note to "Rev'd Mr. Wadsworth" signed "J. B.," presumably referring to Benjamin Wadsworth (1750-1826; Harvard AB 1769).
