Buildings records, bound volume, 1811-1838

This bound volume, likely assembled by the Corporation in the 1850s, contains documents related to Harvard buildings which have been pasted onto the pages. The volume consists of correspondence and memoranda pertaining to the construction of Holworthy Hall, 1811-1812; contracts and correspondence relating to the construction of University Hall, 1813-1814; and correspondence regarding repairs to Massachusetts Hall overseen by Loammi Baldwin in 1812. Additional records pertaining to the construction of Gore Hall, 1834-1838; and the repairs to the Medical College on Mason Street in Boston, 1824 are also located in this volume.

A Coppe of the Plan of Cambridge New Meeting House which was excepted by the people, 1752

The floor plan details the proposed interior of the New Meeting House of the First Parish in Cambridge to be built near the College, in the present area of Lehman Hall. This land became Harvard property in 1833. The drawing includes space allotted for the pulpit, pews, and center aisle. The document is fragile.

Contributions for a bath in Charles' River, 1799 & 1800, 1800

Includes contribution totals from personal subscribers, individual donors, the Harvard Corporation, and the Humane Society for the construction of a bath on the Charles River. Also contains estimated costs for materials and labor.

Extracts made from the records of the Humane Society, 1800

Contains notes from Humane Society meeting discussions relating to the construction of a bath on the Charles River to prevent bathing accidents. In November 1800, four hundred dollars from the Society was allotted to Harvard College Steward Caleb Gannett toward this project.

Letter from Levi Hedge to President John Kirkland, [ca. 1823]

Levi Hedge, Professor of Logic and Metaphysics, wrote Harvard president John Kirkland requesting renovations to the house which he occupied. Hedge's house was situated on North Street (now Massachusetts Avenue). He notes that the kitchen has a leaky sink, loose and unusable shelves, and is insufficiently insulated.

Glazier's report, [ca. 1765-1775]

On verso: S. Hastings, S. Kendal. This report outlines the glass needed for College buildings in the mid-18th century. Estimates include windows for Hollis, Massachusetts, and Harvard Halls and an unspecified College House.

A summary of remarks made by William C. Lane, Librarian of Harvard University, published in the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, December 1909

Lane addressed the Massachusetts Historical Society about the recent discovery of foundations walls, likely from Goffe College, made during the Boston Elevated Railway's excavations in Harvard Square for the subway on Massachusetts Avenue.

Contains blueprint from the Boston Elevated Railway's construction of subway lines underneath Harvard Square. Indicates area of Harvard Yard where construction crews discovered stones likely from the foundation of Goffe College.

Also includes a 1934 letter from Edward Dana of the Boston Elevated Railway Public Trustees to Samuel Eliot Morison, Editor of The Tercentennial History of Harvard University responding to Morison's request for additional information about discovery of early Harvard building foundations during the subway construction excavation in Harvard Square.

The floor plan details all three floors of Harvard Hall, including its cellars, kitchen, chapel, and library. The items in this folder were reproduced from "The Burning of Harvard Hall, 1764, and its consequences," presented by F. Apthorp Foster at the April 1911 meeting of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and published in the Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Volume XIV. The floor plan and exterior views were created by Pierre Eugène du Simitière in circa 1764. The original drawings are held in the Pierre Eugène du Simitière collection in the Ridgeway Branch of the Library Company of Philadelphia.
