Annotated almanac, 1745

Almanac containing calendar pages with sporadic annotations of unidentified measurements and interleaved pages with short handwritten entries about Winthrop's daily activities, and astronomical and meteorological observations. The entries include personal notes about travel, the weather, deaths in the community, notes of public fasts for the Louisbourg expedition (February 28) and the "Indian war" (September 19), and a note of the surrender of Louisbourg (June 17). There is an entry listing the burials and baptisms in Boston by month, with the deaths subdivided for white and black individuals, and notes of "French prisoners" for July and "Fever & flux" for September.

Letters from William Tudor to his mother, Delia Jarvis Tudor,

Four letters written from Paris, in which he describes his capture by a French privateer and discusses virtues and vices of French society and culture. He also relays details about social visits, including a meeting with the Marquis de Lafayette. Included is an undated list of packages and trunks he was sending home. Content is obscured in some places from loss, and dates are missing from two of the letters, but presumably they were sent in the summer of 1800.

Four letters regarding the North American Review, as well as Tudor’s request to be considered for a position as Smith Professor of French and Spanish Languages and Literature at Harvard.

Letters from Thomas James Maling to William Tudor,

Six letters providing information about British naval vessels and news of the movements of French vessels and South American belligerents. He also mentions the silver mining partnership and the agent B. Llaveria. Included are a letter from Maling’s wife, and one letter from Maling in Spanish

Written mostly in a copperplate hand in black ink, and illustrated with watercolor drawings.
