This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Noveau plan topographique de la ville Lyon : comprenant et indiquant toutes les améliorations en projet et en voie d'exécution, par l'agence Fournier, Lyon. It was published by Fournier ca. 1910. Scale [ca. 1:10,000]. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the European Datum 1950, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 31N projected coordinate system. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as roads, railroads and stations, drainage, built-up areas and selected buildings, fortification, property boundaries, parks, and more. Relief shown by hachures.This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of originators, ground condition dates, scales, and map purposes.

Buildings records, bound volume, 1811-1838

This bound volume, likely assembled by the Corporation in the 1850s, contains documents related to Harvard buildings which have been pasted onto the pages. The volume consists of correspondence and memoranda pertaining to the construction of Holworthy Hall, 1811-1812; contracts and correspondence relating to the construction of University Hall, 1813-1814; and correspondence regarding repairs to Massachusetts Hall overseen by Loammi Baldwin in 1812. Additional records pertaining to the construction of Gore Hall, 1834-1838; and the repairs to the Medical College on Mason Street in Boston, 1824 are also located in this volume.

[Estimates from Walton & Moore for the raising and altering of seats in the anatomical room, and for repairing the lower room, northwest corner of the College House], 2 December 1806

The estimate includes projected costs for the materials and labor required for each renovation. The anatomical room needed its circular seats raised and altered. The renovation of the lower room included making new window frames and sashes (including replacing glass), installing new doors, and repairing the floors.

Floor plans and front and end elevations of Indian College drawn by H.R. Shurtleff in May 1934 based on research conducted by Shurtleff from the Harvard College Records and surveys of local period buildings. Shows likely configuration of Indian College with lodging for 20 students, studies, and the printing room which housed the printing press.

Account of time spent on College jobb, April 1813-1816

Sewn volume detailing the hours worked possibly by a carpenter or mason during the construction of University Hall. In addition to time worked, daily entries log the workmen employed on the project and the tasks completed in each room of University Hall. The back cover has several small drawings and illustrations inscribed with the year 1816.

Contract for the great College, 6 May 1813

This is a contract signed between Loammi Baldwin, acting on behalf of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, and Josiah Moore, Esquire; John Walton, Housewright; Thomas Mason, Housewright; Samuel Mason, Housewright; and Joseph Holmes, Housewright, for the construction of University Hall. The agreement was witnessed by William Jenison and Josiah Nottage.

Vote of Harvard College, 9 May 1814

Signed by President John Kirkland, this Corporation vote acknowledges that Loammi Baldwin has given his notice that he can no longer oversee the construction of University Hall. The Corporation votes to pay him seven hundred dollars for his services.

A catalogue of books in the College library: [which Benjamin Welles wished to read], 1797

In this small paper-bound catalog, Benjamin Welles (1781-1860) listed books in the Harvard College Library which he wished to read. He presumably compiled the list by consulting the Library's 1790 printed catalog, as the works are categorized according to subjects outlined in that catalog (Antiquities, Astronomy, Ancient Authors, Biography, Sacred Criticism, Ethics, Geography, Geometry, History, Nature, Travels / Voyages, Natural Law, Logic, Metaphysics, Miscellaneous Works, Dramatic, Phililogy, Natural Philosophy, Poetry, Rhetoric, and Theology). The final pages of Welles' catalog, which he titles "Another Selection," list additional volumes he wished to read. These are listed alphabetically, A - G. Some titles throughout the catalog have been marked with a "+" perhaps to indicate that Welles had read them.

Letter from Samuel Willard, Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Sophronia Willard, Lancaster, Massachusetts, October 18, 1805

Willard describes his current job working at Harvard, where he is paid “to keep order in one of the buildings.” He mentions that he can attend medical lectures free of charge, and refers to a preacher, Mr. Parker, a former classmate of Willard’s. He explains that he is currently with his brother Solomon, who is ill, and that he is living in the College House, where he resided his first year of school.
