I. Charlestown ferry bound volume, 1707-1806

This series contains sixty-nine documents related to the College's interest in the Charlestown ferry between 1707 and 1806 that were gathered together, arranged in chronological order, and pasted into a bound volume at an undetermined date. The majority of documents are leases and bonds with the ferrymen, as well as handwritten copies of Corporation petitions to the General Court regarding ferry fares and bridge development. The series also includes handwritten legal opinions composed by Levi Lincoln and Nathan Dane for the College analyzing the rights of the College to transportation-related income.

Letter to the Selectmen of Charlestown, 1785 January 13

Three-and-a-half-page handwritten letter from "FM Dana by order &c," to the Selectmen of Charlestown. Dana is presumably speaking on behalf of the Selectmen of Cambridge and provides an extensive response to the Charlestown Selectmen about increased ferry fares that is critical of the demands of the Harvard Corporation.

A summary of remarks made by William C. Lane, Librarian of Harvard University, published in the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, December 1909

Lane addressed the Massachusetts Historical Society about the recent discovery of foundations walls, likely from Goffe College, made during the Boston Elevated Railway's excavations in Harvard Square for the subway on Massachusetts Avenue.

The floor plan details all three floors of Harvard Hall, including its cellars, kitchen, chapel, and library. The items in this folder were reproduced from "The Burning of Harvard Hall, 1764, and its consequences," presented by F. Apthorp Foster at the April 1911 meeting of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and published in the Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Volume XIV. The floor plan and exterior views were created by Pierre Eugène du Simitière in circa 1764. The original drawings are held in the Pierre Eugène du Simitière collection in the Ridgeway Branch of the Library Company of Philadelphia.

From J. Hunnewell with estimate of repairing Massachusetts Hall, [ca. 1790]

In this letter, J. Hunnewell writes President Willard with estimates for a new roof for Massachusetts Hall. Hunnewell enclosed estimated costs from both a carpenter and a mason for slate and composition roofs. Estimates include supply and labor costs.

Includes mason John Warland's estimate for adding another storey to Massachusetts Hall, plastering several of the rooms, and the securing the necessary materials for the construction.

Estimate of expense of repairs of Massachusetts by [John] Walton and [Josiah] Moore, 13 January 1806

Includes estimate from Walton & Moore for adding another storey to Massachusetts Hall, replacing the roof, replacing glass, and painting the interior.

Vote of thanks and $100 for repairs of Massachusetts Hall, 15 December 1812

In this letter signed by President John Kirkland, the Corporation voted to honor Loammi Baldwin for his supervision of the repairs to Massachusetts Hall. Repairs included new doors, doorframes, and windows. These updates were likely delayed repairs of damage sustained during the American Revolution when American soldiers were quartered in Massachusetts Hall.

Letter from John Leverett to the Governor of Massachusetts, 27 June 1710

This letter summarizes the activities of the Committee to View Stoughton House including the Committee's recent visit to the dormitory. The letter is signed by "Leverett in the name of the Committee."
