edge effect. Thus, under the influence of the adjacent matrix, fragments undergo microclimatic alterations that accentuate changes in species composition and community structure. In order to better understand edge and matrix effects on the richness and abundance of edaphic arthropods, this study assessed: (a) the difference between habitat (fragment) and non-habitat (matrix); (b) whether there is a continuous interior-edge-matrix gradient; and (c) the difference between matrices for arthropod orders richness and abundance. We selected 15 landscapes, 5 of which contained a cerrado fragment surrounded by sugarcane cultivation, 5 with a cerrado fragment within eucalyptus and 5 with a cerrado fragment within pasture. In each landscape the soil fauna was collected along with the soil and then extracted with the aid of the modified Berlese-Tullgren funnel. We chose the orders Coleoptera, Collembola, Mesostigmata and Oribatida for analysis, and after separation of the individuals we used model selection analysis via AIC. The model type fragment x matrix was the most likely to explain richness, total and relative abundances of the four orders (wAICc between 0,6623 and 1,0). The model of edge distance (edge effect) was plausible to total abundance and relative abundance of Mesostigmata order (wAICc=0,2717 and 0,186). Local environmental variables (soil texture, temperature and relative humidity), and fragment size were also measured to avoid confounding factors and were not presented as plausible models to explain the patterns. So edaphic arthropods, despite protecting themselves under the ground, are extremely sensitive to fragmentation, even with the replacement of natural habitat by agricultural use, such as sugarcane, pasture and eucalyptus. O câncer destaca-se pela alta incidência e mortalidade. Os tratamentos atualmente usados são agressivos e não específicos, com isso cresce a busca por novas drogas. Uma substância que vem despertando muito interesse são as zeólitas, minerais com característica porosa e estrutura conhecida. Estas possuem ações como adjuvante de vacinas, imunomoduladores e imunoestimuladores, o que desperta o interesse em estuda-las no modelo antitumoral. O presente estudo avaliou o efeito antitumoral e imunomodulador da zeólita natural clinoptilolita e da zeólita comercial, utilizando um modelo de câncer mamário (Tumor de Ehrlich). Para tanto a zeólita natural foi caracterizada (Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura e Difração de raio X), realizada avaliação da viabilidade celular (ensaio de MTT), determinada a produção de óxido nítrico por macrófagos peritoneais, quantificação de citocinas (ELISA) e avaliação do crescimento tumoral. As zeólitas natural e comercial apresentaram elevada ativação de macrófagos, e não produziram quantidades significativas de NO. A zeólita natural apresentou citotoxicidade frente ao Tumor de Ehrlich em duas concentrações testadas (5 e 25 mg/ml). Não houve liberação significativa da citocina IL-10, no entanto os grupos que foram reestimulados com zeólita natural apresentaram maior liberação de IL-1β e TNF-α. Nos testes in vivo, a zeólita comercial foi a única que apresentou inibição tumoral frente ao Tumor de Ehrlich, sendo necessários estudos mais aprofundados para definir a sua atividade antitumoral nesse tipo celular.

The intended purpose of this paper is to present the main aspects of natural gas applied to the public transportation as well as the environmental, economical and technical impacts in this sector. Also it is given specific information to be considered when comparing natural gas to other fuels, specially the diesel. At this point is presented the types of internal combustion engines (Otto and Diesel cycle) and which type is used in each vehicle. Moreover, it is presented the main standards pollutant emission (Euro, US and Proconve) with a brief explanation of the tests made in order to approve the engines. This paper is focused on heavy duty vehicles. Also in this paper is exposed the economic impact due to the natural gas use in the public transportation fleet. In addition is presented a real case (of Berlin) and an estimative to a Brazilian city, presenting the potential of natural gas as vehicular fuel in Brazil, as well as financial and environmental aspects of the substitution
