Os betões atuais são materiais com custos extremamente competitivos devido ao baixo custo do cimento Portland. Contudo, os elevados níveis de emissões de C02 gerados na sua produção provocam o aumento do custo final do produto, tanto económico como ambiental. Devido a esta situação algumas adições têm sido estudadas como alternativas para substituir parcialmente os conteúdos de cimento no fabrico de betão. Uma vez que existem grandes quantidades de pó de mármore inutilizadas na região de Évora decidiu-se avaliar o seu comportamento. O pó de mármore foi adicionado em certas percentagens de forma a reduzir os conteúdos de cimento, permitindo avaliar se este iria manter e/ou melhorar as características de resistência à compressão e trabalhabilidade do betão. Além de avaliado o comportamento desta adição, o mesmo foi também comparado com a adição de filer calcário nas mesmas percentagens. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram a exequibilidade da utilização de ambas as adições. ABSTRACT: Concretes currently used in construction are materials with very competitive costs due to the low cost of Portland cement. However, high levels of C02 emissions generated in its production cause an increase of the final cost of the product, both economically and environmentally. Due to this situation, some additions have been studied as alternatives to replace partially cement contents in concrete production. Since there are large quantities of marble dust in the region of Évora, it was decided to evaluate his behavior. The marble dust was added in known percentages so the cement contents could be reduced, allowing evaluating if it will maintain and/or improve the characteristics of the compressive strength and workability of the concrete. ln addition to evaluating the behavior of marble dust, this addition was also compared with the addition of limestone filler in the same percentages. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using both additions.

Hoje em dia, o desenvolvimento dos superplastificantes permite a produção de betões com menor razão água/cimento. Ao usar razões água/cimento mais baixas, os materiais científicos apresentam maior tendência para fissurar devido à retracção autogénea. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a utilização de polímeros superabsorventes (SAP) no controlo da retracção. O uso de SAPs em materiais comentícios atenua a retracção autogénea pois estes produtos permitem o fornecimento interno de água. Estes produtos podem também afectar outras propriedades, afectando as características mecânicas e a trabalhabilidade. Para análise do efeito dos SAP foram estudadas argamassas com várias concentrações deste produto, tendo como referência argamassas semelhantes sem SAP, determinando-se as retracções autogénea e total, a resistência à compressão e o módulo de elasticidade. Além de SAP, foi também utilizado um agregado leve, um outro tipo de introdutor de água, para comparação com os polímeros em estudo. /ABSTRACT: This work presents a study on the use of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in the control of shrinkage. The use of SAPs in cementitious materials reduces the autogenous shrinkage because these products enable the internal supply of water. These materials can also affect other properties such as mechanical properties and workability. To analyze the effect of SAP, mortars containing various concentrations of this product were studied, in comparison with reference mortars without SAP. The tests performed were autogenous and total shrinkage, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. Besides SAP, it was also used a lightweight aggregate, another type of internal supply of water, for comparison with the polymers under study.

Na actualidade, face ao desenvolvimento de betões de alto desempenho caracterizados por apresentarem muito baixa razão água cimento (A/C), tornou-se pertinente o estudo da retracção autogénea, por motivos relacionados com a resistência, durabilidade e estética destes materiais. Nesta dissertação foi elaborado um estudo prático com o intuito de avaliar o impacto da adição de agregado na redução da retracção autogénea, em seis misturas cimentícias. Através de ensaios foram obtidos valores reais de retracção autogénea, sendo estes posteriormente comparados com os valores obtidos teoricamente com recurso ao modelo proposto por Hobbs na década de 70. Tendo em consideração os valores teóricos e sua comparação com os valores reais obtidos nos ensaios é proposta uma alteração ao modelo teórico, que tem em conta a maior resistência à compressão dos betões actuais. Esta modificação permitiu estimar com maior exactidão os valores de retracção autogénea nas diferentes misturas. /ABSTRACT: Nowadays the development of high performance concretes characterized by a low water-to­ cement ratio (W/C), it became relevant to study the autogenous shrinkage, for reasons relating to the strength, durability and aesthetics of these materials. ln this study the effect of adding aggregate in six cementitious mixtures was evaluated. The results obtained in the experimental test were compared with theoretical values from a model propose by Hobbs in the 70's for autogenous shrinkage. Given the theoretical values and its comparison with the actual values obtained in the tests an amendment is proposed to the theoretical model that takes into account the higher compressive strength of actual concrete. This modification allowed us to estimate accurately the values of autogenous shrinkage in the different mixtures.

Despite significant advances in building technologies with the use of conventional construction materials (as concrete and steel), which significantly have driven the construction industry, earth construction have demonstrated its importance and relevance, as well as it has matched in an efficient and eco-friendly manner the social housing concerns. The diversity of earth construction techniques allowed this material to adapt to different climatic, cultural and social contexts until the present time. However, in Angola, the construction with earth is still associated with population fringes of weak economic resources, for which, given the impossibility of being able to acquire modern construction materials (steel, cement, brick, among others), they resort to the use of available natural materials. Furthermore, the lack of scientific and technical knowledge justifies the negative appreciation of traditional building techniques, and the derogatory way how are considered the earth constructions in Angolan territory. Given the country's current development status, and taking into account the environmental requirements and the real socio-economic sustainability of Angola, it is considered that one of the viable and adequate options, could be the recovering and upgrading of the ancestral techniques of earth construction. The purpose of this research is to develop the technical and scientific knowledge in order to improve and optimize these construction solutions, responding to the real problems of housing quality as well as to the current social, economic and environmental sustainability requirements. In this paper, a description of the physical and mechanical characteristics of the adobes typically used in the construction of traditional houses in some localities of Huambo, province in Angola, is carried out. The methodology was based on mechanical in-situ testing in adobe blocks manufactured with traditional procedures: i) tensile strength evaluated with the bending test and compressive strength test on earth blocks specimens; and, ii) durability and erodibility test by Geelong method adopting the New Zealand standard (NZS) procedures (4297: 1998; 4297: 1998 and 4297: 1999). The results allow the characterization of the materials used in the construction of raw earth in the Huambo region, contributing to the development of knowledge of these sustainable and traditional housing constructive solutions with a strong presence in Angola [1, 2]. This study is part of a larger project in the area of Earth Construction [3], which aims to produce knowledge which can stimulate the use of environmental friendly construction materials and contribute to develop constructive solutions with improved performance, durability, comfort, safety and sustainability.
