ABSTRACT; The theme of this dissertation is "The mills of the River Almansor in Montemoro-Novo County - a cultural heritage to know, preserve and treasure". It's constituted by five chapters, in which we intended to demonstrate the importance that the molinological heritage has nowadays. ln a cultural view it is disseminated on a national and international level by the approaching of the evolution of the concept like it is demonstrated by some studies and experiments here presented, as well as a brief description of the technological evolution of the traditional grinding and analysis of the geomorphologic and historical factors that were in the origin of this activity in Montemor-o-Novo, which allowed a better knowledge and understanding of their development. One of the main goals was to portray the existing mills alongside the river banks of Almansor, in the County of Montemor. lt was made throughout a survey of the patrimonial background on the field, during the training held by the City Hall, including its identification and molinological architectural characterization. ln the last chapter was presented as a response to the main reason of this dissertation, a revival proposal of the mills, which may contribute to the preservation and protection of the few that still remains, in this County. The methodology that was followed for this thesis was based on five aspects: first, the field survey, revealing the research and identification of the location of the mills on the field; interviews, research of sources, old documentation and collection of bibliography.

The following report transpires the progress of learning and reflection that was accomplished within the Supervised Teaching Practice in Preschool Education and in Primary Education. In this, it showed a reflection of educational practice that aimed to understand how it may enhance the learning of Natural Sciences in children. For such, we highlighted a few goals that were very present in the research dimension, such as, promoting learning environments in the area of physical and natural sciences, making children active observers with powers to investigate, experiment and learn; promoting ways of participation and active learning, challenging and motivating; knowledge and understanding of prior knowledge of these, thus disproving your expression and doubt through questioning; and finally, the promotion of attitudes, action skills, methodological skills and communication skills in children with regard to the learning of natural events. Therefore, the main purpose of this research-action, in ways where it was accomplished, was the reconstruction of knowledge based on the awareness that children already contained, building my own professional knowledge, through my own action that were recorded, analyzed and justified.

The study and preservation of museum collections requires complete knowledge and understanding of constituent materials that can be natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic polymers. In former times, objects were incorporated in museum collections and classified solely by their appearance. New studies, prompted by severe degradation processes or conservation-restoration actions, help shed light on the materiality of objects that can contradict the original information or assumptions. The selected case study presented here is of a box dating from the beginning of the 20th century that belongs to the Portuguese National Ancient Art Museum. Museum curators classified it as a tortoiseshell box decorated with gold applications solely on the basis of visual inspection and the information provided by the donor. This box has visible signs of degradation with white veils, initially assumed to be the result of biological degradation of a proteinaceous matrix. This paper presents the methodological rationale behind this study and proposes a totally non-invasive methodology for the identification of polymeric materials in museum artifacts. The analysis of surface leachates using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) complemented by in situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) allowed for full characterization of the object s substratum. The NMR technique unequivocally identified a great number of additives and ATR FT-IR provided information about the polymer structure and while also confirming the presence of additives. The pressure applied during ATR FT-IR spectroscopy did not cause any physical change in the structure of the material at the level of the surface (e.g., color, texture, brightness, etc.). In this study, variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VP-SEM-EDS) was also used to obtain the elemental composition of the metallic decorations. Additionally, microbiologic and enzymatic assays were performed in order to identify the possible biofilm composition and understand the role of microorganisms in the biodeterioration process. Using these methodologies, the box was correctly identified as being made of cellulose acetate plastic with brass decorations and the white film was identified as being composed mainly of polymer exudates, namely sulphonamides and triphenyl phosphate.

Globalization has increasingly brought permanent contact with people whose cultural background is different from what many would consider their ‘own’ culture. The area of intercultural management is of critical interest due to the impact of increased European and global migration, which has required health and social care leaders and managers to develop competency to respond to the diversity and changing needs of their workforce and service users. The communities within the European Union are now often characterised by significant diversity whether at cultural, social, or psychological levels. The purpose of this chapter is to enable health and social care practitioners to assume a clinical/ professional leadership role in quality intercultural management in the health and social care sector. This chapter will focus on developing health and social care practitioners’ knowledge and understanding in the area of intercultural management within contemporary health and social care organisations. It will focus on the critical application of knowledge to practice through the provision of underpinning knowledge, understanding and debates surrounding contemporary issues and practices in the areas of intercultural management. Many practitioners accessing this information may already work in the heath/social sector and this critical focus on intercultural and diversity management has the potential to improve the quality in health and social care services through the critical application to practice.
