School failure is a chronic problem in many developing countries and in some developed as Portugal due to factors like cognitive deficiencies of children, an inadequate family environment, low SES and bad teaching methods or school organization. It is important to develop effective and simple intervention strategies able to cope with the problem at an individual level independently of the cause. The general objective of the following study is to develop behavioral training techniques to help children with problems of school failure. 6 - 12 years old children attending ISCED 1, with academic difficulties because of family problems, social exclusion (living in poverty or belonging to an ethnic minority) or poor schooling were trained. Cognitive-behavioral techniques that have been widely used to train persons with intellectual, sensorial, physical or social deficiencies were applied. Results are evaluated in terms of % of attained objectives, time, and (subjective) teacher satisfaction. Some results of individual children are shown. Training programs seem to be successful independently of the (mostly unknown) cause of failure of the trained subject.

ABSTRACT; ln the last decades Early Intervention has demonstrated its usefulness towards the children and their families. Therefore further ponderation and investigation on the subject is most important. The Évora district pioneers the implementation of Early Intervention strategies, since the late 80’s and hence, vast organization experience. This makes it the ideal location to implement this study, which aims to learn and characterize the participants in the Early Intervention, and also the approaches directed at the families where child abuse occurs. The methodical design of this study is descriptive, and both quantitative and qualitative in method. The data was collected by a self-completed questionnaire, composed of open and closed questions, and then subjected to statistic and content analysis. The study population was composed by the technicians of all the teams in the Early Intervention program, of the Évora district. While not neglecting the ecological/systemic perspective, of this study, it allowed us an overall outlook of the various environmental and systemic contexts, that exist regarding the families and thus their importance in promoting the family competences was underlined.

With this preliminary study, we intented to analyze the quality of communication in magnetic resonance imaging exams, starting from the observation of verbal and non-verbal language. By analogy with other areas, it was developed an intervention program focused on the training of technicians and operational assistants of the Radiology service of public hospital. Using a grid note, we assessed the effect of skills training in the increased of appropriate behaviour during the MRIs. In General, the results examined showed that the training had a significant effect on operational assistants and technicians of MRIs, resulting in positive changes in the workplace, such as developing a proper relationship with patients to promote the success of the diagnosis.

The interest in research on parents of children with severe developmental disorders has known different focuses of interest over time, from a more psychopathological approach, interested in describing the negative aspects of the impact of having a child with disabilities, to the study of coping strategies used to deal with the situation, and the study of the strength and resilience mobilized by these parents. The big change, however, is that the concern about parents is not only because of the child, but also for what happens in their own development processes. This developmental perspective is addressed here to the construction of the fundamental attachment between mother/father and the baby, how this bond is broken, and how it can be reconstructed when the child has a severe disability diagnosis. Only the resumption of parents’ developmental process will enable them to perform their parenting in an emotionally appropriate and consistent manner, based on adequate responsiveness in everyday life situations. This view allows to open new interdisciplinary challenges about how to work on early intervention in child development and to a comprehensive understanding of the family centered intervention.
