Thanks to some classical and recent studies, we know the main features of the huge structure that served as financial support to the secular clergy in the Ancien Régime, the system of benefices. However, almost nothing has been said yet about the process that made possible the conformation around these benefices of a market of transnational nature, controlled by the Holy See, to which outflowed a great amount of capital from the Iberian Peninsula. So these pages are intended to sketch a research line, that of the commodification of ecclesiastical benefices, virtually unattended so far. It will be examined the instruments of this market, its practices and the comparative evolution of the phenomenon in cathedrals of Castile and Portugal.

This work, by combining these two areas to the elements available in a prosopographic database, has made possible to identify and classify relationships between occupations of many individuals (in general Holy Office members of the 16th-18th centuries). To achieve this goal the data used was gathered in SPARES repository, including some textual descriptions of the time occurrences. They are all few structured. The application of natural language processing (stopwords removal and stemming application), combined with the construction of two ontologies, made possible to classify those data, allowing a more effective search. By contributing to the automatic classification of historical data, this thesis proposes methodologies that can be applied to data from any other field of knowledge, specially data dealing with time and space variables.

O presente documento estrutura-se em 4 eixos: o Eixo 1 – Componente teórica - ; o Eixo 2 – Componente metodológica - ; Eixo 3 – Componente dos resultados - ; Eixo 4 – Componente de intervenção sócio- organizacional; Abstract: Intervention of the Holy House of Mercy of Evora - The quality of the Social Responses and satisfaction perceived Internal SCME of users -. This work is to design, understand and analyze the status quo of the dimensions of satisfaction (Contemplating their personal and social welfare) of users of the valences of the Holy House of Mercy of Evora, therefore, analyzing and understanding the quality life of these same users, addressing therefore, on potential and / or obvious institutional needs to suppress and eradicate social problems. The survey of current information was obtained through two methodological tools for data collection: survey by self-administered direct application questionnaire (users), and through semi-structured interviews (technical directors of valences). With regard to the data processing methods, the first instrument was used SPSS 22, in the second content analysis. After detection of the needs, it proceeded to draw up a proposal for social and organizational intervention in order to solve these same existing needs. This document is divided into four axes: Axis 1 - Theoretical component -; Axis 2 - methodological component -; Axis 3 - Component of results -; Axis 4 - socio-organizational intervention component.

Grego´rio Lopes (c. 1490–1550) was one of the most prominent painters of the renaissance and Mannerism in Portugal. The painting “Mater Misericordiae” made for the Sesimbra Holy House of Mercy, circa 1535–1538, is one of the most significant works of the artist, and his only painting on this theme, being also one of the most significant Portuguese paintings of sixteenth century. The recent restoration provided the possibility to study materially the painting for the first time, with a multianalytical methodology incorporating portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectroscopy, micro-X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array and mass spectrometry detectors. The analytical study was complemented by infrared reflectography, allowing the study of the underdrawing technique and also by dendrochronology to confirm the date of the wooden panels (1535–1538). The results of this study were compared with previous ones on the painter’s workshop, and significant differences and similitudes were found in the materials and techniques used

This study aims to identify the materials used in the production of a post-byzantine icon from the Museum of Évora’s collection. The icon, representing the “Emperor Constantine and his mother Helen holding the Holy Cross” was once dated as being from the 10th century. Throughout a multi-analytical approach, combining area exams with spectroscopic techniques, this study tried to confirm its actual chronology. The results obtained revealed that it is most likely an icon from the late 17th or 18th century.
