Access, participation and exclusion from higher education for marginalized and disadvan-taged sections of the population are an intricate socio-political as well as economic practice that has manifold explanations and outcomes. During the last three decades, the higher education has experienced expansion in both enrolments and institutions. The approaches and means of delivery have changed besides the diversification in provision. The role of the state and mar¬ket has also reformed. This characteristic has also altered the nature of equity in higher edu¬cation across the globe. The chapters of this book on different countries of Asia, Europe and Latin America examine access and describe the several spaces where cohorts of relevant age group are included, excluded, or are at threat of exclusion in higher education. The chapters also narrate the state of affairs in which despite numerous alike structure in the experience and outcomes of social exclusion across disenfranchised groups and regions, how some critical differences have led to different paths of struggles and policy formation to attain the objective of equity in higher education.

In aircraft components maintenance shops, components are distributed amongst repair groups and their respective technicians based on the type of repair, on the technicians skills and workload, and on the customer required dates. This distribution planning is typically done in an empirical manner based on the group leader’s past experience. Such a procedure does not provide any performance guarantees, leading frequently to undesirable delays on the delivery of the aircraft components. Among others, a fundamental challenge faced by the group leaders is to decide how to distribute the components that arrive without customer required dates. This paper addresses the problems of prioritizing the randomly arriving of aircraft components (with or without pre-assigned customer required dates) and of optimally distributing them amongst the technicians of the repair groups. We proposed a formula for prioritizing the list of repairs, pointing out the importance of selecting good estimators for the interarrival times between repair requests, the turn-around-times and the man hours for repair. In addition, a model for the assignment and scheduling problem is designed and a preliminary algorithm along with a numerical illustration is presented.

Teknova have 2D steady-state models of the calciner but wish, in the long term, to have a 3D model that can also cover unsteady conditions, and can can model the loss of axisymmetry that someties occurs. Teknova also wish to understand the processes happening around the tip of the upper electrode, in particular the formation of a lip on it and the the shape of the empty region below it. The Study Group proposed potential models for the degree of graphitization, and for the granular flow. Also the Study Group considered the upper electrode in detail. The proposed model for the lip formation is by sublimation of carbon from the hottest parts of the furnace with redeposition in the region around the electrode, which may stick particles onto the electrode surface. In this model the region below the electrode would be a void, roughly a vertex-down conical cavity. The electric field near the lower rim of the electrode will then have a singularity and so the most intense heating of the charge will be around the rim. We conjecture that the reason why the lower electrode lasts so much longer than the upper is that it is not adjacent to a cavity like this, and therefore does not have a singularity in the field.
