Although suicidality is associated with mental illness in general and depression in particular, many depressed individuals do not attempt suicide and some individuals who attempt to or do die by suicide do not present depressive symptoms. This article aims to contribute to a more psychosocial approach to understanding suicide risk in nonclinical populations. In advocating a psychosocial perspective rather than a depression-focused approach, this article presents four diverse studies that demonstrate sampling and measurement invariance in findings across different populations and specific measures. Study 1 tests the mediation effects of 2 interpersonal variables, thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, in the association between depressive symptoms and recent suicidality. Studies 2 and 3 evaluate the contribution of hopelessness and psychache, beyond depressive symptoms, to suicidality. Study 4 tests the contribution of life events behind depressive symptoms, and other relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables, to the estimation of “future suicidality.” Overall, results demonstrate that depressive symptoms do not directly predict suicidality in nonclinical individuals, but that other psychosocial variables mediate the association between depressive symptoms and suicidality or predict suicidality when statistically controlling for depressive symptoms. The article contributes to understanding some of the nonpsychopathological factors that potentially link depressive symptoms to suicide risk and that might themselves contribute to suicidality, even when controlling for depressive symptoms.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects that a musical program held for 12 weeks had in neuropsychiatric and depressive symptoms and emotional expressions in participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD). There were 13 participants with Alzheimer's disease diagnosis in a moderate to severe stadium of the disease, 8 of them were integrated in a musical program and 5 of them constituted the control group. ln order to identify the dementia stadiums, the Global Deterioration Scale was used. ln order to evaluate the symptoms, before and after, the Neuropsychiatric lnventory, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia and Observed Emotion Rating Scale were used. Without significant results, the participation in the musical program improved the scores in the performed tasks, becoming a program with positive effects regarding behaviour and psychological symptoms in moderate to severe stadiums of Alzheimer's disease, although the control group also profited from doing the task that they were exposed to.

/ABSTRACT: We intendend to study wich personality traits relate to depressiva symptoms, and positive and negative affectivity, in a sample of 187 university students, between 18 and 43 years. We did the correlation between the personality patterns scales and the personality patterns of severe personality with the depressive symptoms measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the positive and negative affectivity measured by the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Shedule. We did a multiple regression analysis using the personality patterns scale of Millon Clinical Multiaxial lnventory (MCMI-II) as predictors and the result of CES-D, as dependent variable. We obtained a significant correlation between the borderline, masochist, schizotypal, negativistic, avoidant and paranoid personality patterns and the depressive symptoms. Negative affectivity relates also positively with dependent and schizoid patterns. Positive affectivity correlated significant and positively with histrionic and narcissistic personality patterns and negatively with schizoid, schizotypal, negativistic, borderline, avoidant and masochist personality patterns. ln the regression analysis, the borderline pattern predicts the presence of depressive symptoms as well as the sadistic and dependent, but in the negative sense.

The present study extends previous findings by examining whether defense styles, selfobject needs, attachment styles relate to Neediness and Self-Criticism, as maladaptive personality dimensions focused, respectively, on relatedness and self-definition in an Iranian sample. Three hundred and fifty two participants completed a socio-demographic questionnaire as well as the Persian forms of the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire, Experience of Close Relationships-Revised, Defense Style Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory–II and Selfobject Needs Inventory. Two Multiple Linear Regression Analyses, entering Self-criticism and Neediness as criterion variables, were computed. According to the results high Attachment anxiety, high Immature defenses, high depressive symptoms, and high need for idealization were related to self-criticism, and explained 47% of its variance. In addition, high attachment anxiety, low mature defenses, high neurotic defenses, high avoidance of mirroring, and low avoidance of idealization/twinship were related to neediness, and explained 40% of its variance. A Principal Component Analysis was performed, entering all the studied variables. Three factors emerged; one describing a maladaptive form of psychological functioning and two describing more mature modes of psychological functioning. The results are discussed in their implications for the understanding of neediness and self-criticism as maladaptive personality dimensions focused, respectively, on relatedness and self-definition.

Background and aims(s): The study evaluated the contribution of coping strategies, based on the Toulousiane conceptualization of coping, to the prediction of suicide risk and tested the moderating effect of gender, controlling for depressive symptoms. Method: A two-time data collection design was used. A community sample of 195 adults (91 men and 104 women) ranging in age from 19 to 65 years and living in several Portuguese regions, mostly in Alentejo, participated in this research. Results: Gender, depressive symptoms, control, and withdrawal and conversion significantly predicted suicide risk and gender interacted with control, withdrawal and conversion, and social distraction in the prediction of suicide risk. Coping predicted suicide risk only for women. Conclusions: Results have important implications for assessment and intervention with suicide at-risk individuals. In particular, the evaluation and development of coping skills is indicated as a goal for therapists having suicide at-risk women as clients.
