The aim of this study was to investigate the action of inhibiting S. aureus biofilm formation, and the ability to eliminate formed biofilm, by alcoholic extracts of green, red and brown propolis from Brazil. Ten isolates of S. aureus have been tested, 8 field isolates, 1 MRSA and 1 ATCC 25923, by microplate quantitative method. For the evaluation of inhibitory action, the isolates were inoculated, in triplicate, in TSB 1% glucose in the presence of green (1), red (2) and brown (4) propolis extracts. Biofilm formation was evaluated by optical reading, compared to a negative control consisting of a mixture of TSB and extract. For biofilm elimination assay, extracts were added to plates with 24h cultures of the same isolates. Assays were repeated three times on three different days. Eight out of the 10 isolates produced less biofilm in the presence of the green propolis extracts, so the inhibitory effect is 80%. Brown propolis extracts inhibited the formation of biofilm in 10% to 70% of the isolates and the red extracts in 30% to 80%. Regarding the biofilm elimination activity, green propolis extract was positive for 9 out of the 10 isolates (90%), the brown propolis extracts were positive for 0% to 100% isolates and red extracts for 0% to 10% isolates.

This paper presents a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming approach for solving the self-scheduling problem of a price-taker thermal and wind power producer taking part in a pool-based electricity market. Uncertainty on electricity price and wind power is considered through a set of scenarios. Thermal units are modelled by variable costs, start-up costs and technical operating constraints, such as: forbidden operating zones, ramp up/down limits and minimum up/down time limits. An efficient mixed-integer linear program is presented to develop the offering strategies of the coordinated production of thermal and wind energy generation, having as a goal the maximization of profit. A case study with data from the Iberian Electricity Market is presented and results are discussed to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The sweet cherry ‘Sunburst’ is highly appreciated by consumers due to its organoleptic traits. Regional producers tend to harvest cherries sooner in order to increase their profits. With the aim of understanding the consequences of this we have tested the effect of different ripeness stages at the moment of harvesting on fruit quality. Quality parameters tested included external colour (L*, a*, b*), fruit texture, total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA). To evaluate nutritional quality total antioxidant activity was measured too. Once again, and in agreement with results obtained in previous studies, we conclude that there is no advantage in picking less ripe cherries.

Os investimentos em novas tecnologias de produção e investigação por parte dos produtores também são uma boa opção para rentabilizar a casta e fazer com que ela não desapareça do mercado, o que seria desastroso na perspectiva cultural e económica; ### Abstract: The production of the table grape “Dona Maria”, a 100% national Portuguese grape variety, created and produced in the 1950s in the former National Agricultural Station (EAN) in Oeiras, Portugal, by Leão Ferreira de Almeida, has been decreasing year after year as a result of lack of interest and abandonment on behalf of producers. It is a very sweet grape with big berries and is highly appreciated by the Portuguese, who find it ever more difficult to find it in the marketplace. This case study´s objectives were to investigate the shortage of production by growers, and to suggest through marketing strategies and tools, ways to make this grape better known and more consumed by the Portuguese market. Within the scope of highlighting and promoting this national product, “Dona Maria” grape is an excellent option either as a fresh consumable or raisin in school and university restaurants. Investment in new production technologies and research are also a good choice and direction to promote the variety and avoid its disappearance from the market, which would be disastrous both culturally and economically.

The Archive of the House of Patudos. This dissertation addresses the problematic of archives of house museums in Portugal. These institutions are commonly associated with the perpetuation of the memory of a personality. The objectives of this project are the identification of the archives, the gathering of information about the archival treatment and about the functions that they perform in the institutions. To the attainment of these objectives an inquiry was made. The analysis of the collected data reveals an undesirable reality. Many collections are still not the object of any treatment. It was verified that the use of collections in museological tasks is, in some cases, incipient. As a final result of this thesis, we have presented a guide of the collections in the care of house museums in Portugal. Another objective of this project is the archive of House of Patudos – Museum of Alpiarça. It is made the presentation of this institution, the context and the producers, as well as an analysis of the archive and its functions of the archive in the performance of the museological activities.

Mining and metallurgical industries are the most responsible for heavy metal contamination. These contaminants are often associated to poor management strategies and the lack of suitable containment areas. This is the case of one of the largest metal alloy producers in the São Francisco river basin, in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. During operation, the tailings of this activity have been accumulated in the surrounding area, leading to heavy metal contamination (Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr and As), much above the critical levels, which accumulate in the sediments of the nearby waterways, in the soils of the drainage area, and in the water column. In this work we are going to discuss both the contamination level and its extent in the Consciência river, a small tributary of the São Francisco river, the longest river entirely Brazilian, by analyzing the geochemistry and mineralogy of the accumulated sediments. It will be also discuss the reclamation strategies of this site and the impact on the environment.

The market for table grapes is moving into mass production of specialty seed-less grapes in covered areas, aiming at obtaining premium prices with early or late production of high quality products. Production of quality seedless grapes is not straightforward since it is requires the correct combination of various independent characteristics, such as color, sugars, size and quantity at the right moment for successful harvesting and marketing. The present study was carried out at the two largest Portuguese producers located in Alentejo, and has the objective of studying the effect of irrigation management strategies and two different soils on the various relevant parameters for successful production and marketing. The management strategies were the application of ten day stress at the end of the cycle, in order to promote early maturing of the grapes. Three different timings of the stress were applied. Soil moisture, sap flow, bark thickness, as well as leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content were measured regularly during the production season. The results indicate that the roots explore a rather large soil volume and the plants can successfully withstand reasonable periods of drought without significant changes to the plant physiology. Additionally late rains can mask the effect of any farmer applied drought and invalidate any farmer induced stress to the plants. Water-logged soils tend to cause early onset of maturity, but cause the ripening stage to extend over a longer period of time, and thus, in effect result in a delay in the harvest date. Topography also has some effect on the ripening, since hot air tends to accumulate under the plastic at the higher areas of the field.
