The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of two Amblyseius largoensis (Acari:Phytoseiidae) populations in controlling Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). The treatments were: release of A. largoensis from the island of La Réunion; release of A. largoensis from the state of Roraima, Brazil; and a control, without predator release. Initially, 20 predators were released per plant; three other releases were done at a rate of ten adults per plant, at 46, 135, and 156 days after the first release. The population densities were estimated every 20 days, during six months. Both A. largoensis populations evaluated are not sufficiently efficient to control the R. indica population.

The root knot nematode (RKN), Meloidogyne incognita, is widespread worldwide and a major pathogen of several cultivated crops. The use of resistant genotypes is the most effective and environmentally sound way to manage RKN. In this study, we screened 16 selected sweet potato cultivars including Amanda, Bárbara, Beatriz, Beauregard, Brazlândia Branca, Brazlândia Rosada, Brazlândia Roxa, BRS Amélia, BRS Cuia, BRS Rubissol, Carolina Vitória, Duda, Júlia, Marcela, PA-26/2009, and Princesa obtained from Embrapa and Universidade Federal do Tocantins? germplasm bank. Studies were conducted under greenhouse and field conditions and the agronomic performance of the cultivars was evaluated in a nematode and soilborne insect-infested field. All 16 sweet potato cultivars tested were rated as resistant to this nematode both under greenhouse and field conditions with reproduction factors < 1. In the field infested with M. incognita, sweet potato cultivars Duda, BRS Amélia, Beauregard, Brazlândia Rosada, and Brazlândia Roxa stood out as superior cultivars, with average yield ranging from 26 to 47 tons per ha. Overall, most cultivars exhibited a fusiform to near fusiform root shape, a good characteristic for the market, and were moderately affected by insects (attack incidence 1 to 30%). As global demand for energy continues to rise, selecting new cultivars of sweet potatoes with increased resistance to nematode diseases and with high yield will be important for food security and biofuel production.

Os tratamentos aplicados no experimento 1 foram a testemunha capinada, a testemunha sem capina, sulfentrazone 25 g i.a. ha-1, sulfentrazone 50 g i.a. ha -1, sulfentrazone 100 g i.a. ha-1 e sulfentrazone 150 g i.a. ha-1. ABSTRACT: The control of volunteer soybean plants (Glycine max ) has intensified in recent years in function of the increasing incidence of soybean diseases mainly the Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Moreover, the competition of volunteer soybean plants can cause yield losses in successive crops. Two experiments were conducted under field conditions in Rio Verde, Goiás State, Brazil, in order to evaluate the control of volunteer soybean plants in sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The experimental design was a randomized complete block, with four replications. Treatments applied on experiment 1 were: hoed check; unhoed check, sulfentrazone 25 g ai ha-1, sulfentrazone 50 g ai ha-1, sulfentrazone 100 g ai ha-1, sulfentrazone 150 g ai ha-1. The treatments applied on experiment 2 were the same doses described on experiment 1 plus sulfentrazone 200 g ai ha-1 and 250 g ai ha-1. The sulfentrazone is unable to completely kill the volunteer soybean plants. However, there is a temporary stoppage of soybean growth enabling the initial startup of the sunflower plants. Doses ranging from 114.2 to 158.8 g ai ha-1 provided the highest sunflower yield, avoiding the competition of the volunteer soybean plants.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of row spacing and nitrogen topdressing fertilization of two materials (genotype 07SEQCL441 CL and cultivar BRS Esmeralda) on the plant height, yield components, grain yield, and quality of an upland rice crop grown in a no-tillage system. Trials were conducted for two growing seasons under field conditions in a 3 x 4 factorial, randomized, complete block design, with four replications. For each material, treatments consisted of the combination of row spacing (0.225, 0.35, and 0.45 m) with nitrogen (N) applied as topdressing (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1). The lowest row spacing (0.225 m) for genotypes 07SEQCL441 CL and BRS Esmeralda provided a higher number of tillers, number of panicles m-2, and grain yield of rice. Increasing rates of N in the topdressing improved the rice grain yield for both cultivars, but for 07SEQCL441 CL, the grain yield was positively affected only to applications up to 50 kg N ha-1. Row spacing and N rates did not affect the rice grain quality. Therefore, these results indicate that the narrowest row spacing used (0.225 m) with N fertilization as topdressing increased the rice grain yield most in the no-tillage system.

Biochar has been used worldwide as soil amendment. Due to the high sorption capacity of organic compounds by charcoal in general, the use of biochar can change the soil sorptive properties, that could result in a environmental protective strategy in one hand and/or in need of higher pesticides doses in another hand. However no data in the literature is available about the long term effect of biochar application in the sorptive properties of the soil, even studies about the sorptive properties of soil treated with biochar are scarce, the few available papers are with pure biochar. This unprecedented work, evaluating the sorption of atrazine in a clayed soil treated with biochar, under experimental field conditions, evaluated the sorption isotherms one and three years after the single biochar application (16 Mg ha-1 of biochar). One year after the biochar application the Kf was two times higher for the biochar amended soil than for the control one (without biochar). This effect decreases after three years from the application, but it is even significantly higher (50% higher) than the control treatment.

In field conditions two experiments were carried out in 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, to evaluate potassium (K) content in berries, and pH and total soluble solid values in the must. The experiment 1 was carried on a Udorthent soil and the experiment 2 on a Haplumbrept soil, both at Southern Brazil, Bento Gonçalves city. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapevine was grafted on different rootstocks (Rupestris Du Lot, R. 99, R. 110, SO4, 420 A, 1103, 101-14 and 3309). At full ripening, berries were collected and potassium concentration (2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons), pH and total soluble solids (2001/2002 season) were determined. Rootstock didn?t affect potassium content of berries, and pH and total soluble solid values in the must.
