ABSTRACT The multifunctionality (MF) of the agriculture traditionally has been approached from the perspective of developed countries and very few times it has been analyzed in the context of countries in development. The present study, by means of a field work that consults several social actor, identifies the presence of multiple social, economic and environmental functions that they go beyond the productive function in the case of the agroindustry of the panela (not centrifuged sugar) in Colombia and it establishes differential characteristics in the relevance and environment of these function in three local agrifood systems (LAS) of the panela. Finally, starting from these discoveries it outlines new research challenges to measure the MF and for the design of policies based on the MF that allow to activate and strengthen LAS of undeveloped countries.

Seventh grade students share personal characteristics that are analyzed in this paper based on the teachers´ performance of the proper mediation for the students´ learning. The results of an investigation done with the model of teachers´ profiles at this level will be the basis for this paper (Alfaro et al, 2008a). We conclude that the biopsychosocial development and maturational stage of the transit-preteen-teen children must be the domain of faculty at this level, as well as, the socioeconomic context of family and social contexts of their students.

This paper analyzes the impact of change processes experienced by many student populations when completing primary education (1st-6th grade) and starting secondary education (7th-11th grade). Based on the research conducted, this paper describes situations and aspects that may result in conditional factors for the student’s adjustment at this level: time-space changes, as well as organizational and dynamic changes that would set the new educational environment and social context in which this new stage will be developed. Such conditional factors that affect learning in incoming students: programs, teaching methodology, learning styles and new evaluation methods will be discussed. As a result of this research, a proposal is presented to facilitate transition from primary to the secondary education. This proposal includes guidelines for awareness and strengthening of pedagogical mediation, which would contribute to the permanence of students from all types of institutions in the education system.

This article studies the importance of pedagogical mediation in helping first-year students in the Teacher Training area to advance from intellectual heteronomy to intellectual autonomy. It explains some strategies and experiences implemented by the authors. It focuses on the need of paying attention to students in order to understand their expectations, opinions and previous experiences as a basis for developing different topics and concepts, to favor an actual free participation in the pedagogical mediation dynamics and, consequently, opportunities for students to express themselves with autonomy. The aforementioned strategies allow for the transition from a pedagogy centered on teaching to a pedagogy centered on learning, in such a way that the future educator becomes a protagonist in his/her formation and constructs his/her own intellectual identity, based on the concept of action-reflection-action. The authors of this article consider that the first year in higher education is a privileged opportunity to develop the autonomy of future teachers, and, as stated by Freire (2004), the respect for autonomy is an ethical imperative.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of two online forums carried out with the participation of 42 students of the Licenciaturas in Preschool Education, Primary Education and Secondary Education of the University of Costa Rica. The main purpose of the forums was to determine the insights of the participant students about the competencies they have achieved in the field of education research, and which have been the essential tools for them to systematize their own teaching practices. The discussion forums were part of the course FD5091 Métodos de Investigación Educativa [Education Research Methods] of the School of Teacher Education, delivered from March-April 2010. Of the sample, 60 percent were students of the Preschool teaching program, 35 percent were from the Primary Education teaching program and 5 percent were from the Secondary Education teaching program in the fields of Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. According to the insights and beliefs showed by the participants –both, the future teachers and the profession practitioners–, there are no opportunities for research or systematization of their own teaching mediation, in the current work situation.(1) Translator’s Note: In Costa Rica, the “Licenciatura” is a one-year post-Bachelor study program, usually including thesis. “Primary Education” refers to students from the 1st to 6th grades, and “Secondary Education” refers to students from the 7th to 11th grades.

The biggest challenge is to truly represent the international policy of the country being represented, and that is how this exercise opens windows to unknown worlds which break mental structuresand collective imaginaries, above which prejudice and negative discrimination settle. The interdisciplinaryfocus upon which the practice is built has to be added: the simulated situations demand a wider and holisticconceptual effort to obtain an overcoming proposal.Taking as a model 4th MONUUNQ (2009), it is intended to sustain the idea that role playing habilitatesnew skills, competences and cognitive perspectives for the person who, with insistence and exercise, willprogressively build a real empowerment. Sooner or later, the active subject on those practices will move thelearnt contents to his everyday life and will propel an actual Human Rights Education.‘Normative mediation’ takes place in the public space, the place from which people should fight to be recognizedby equals, ‘with and from other people’, since to obtain an active negotiation and fruitful leadershipwhich will turn into a final written document, the student will have to abide by the codes of internationaldiplomacy – oratory, protocol respect, procedure acknowledge, and defense of the constitutive values of United Nations Organization.
