The virtual class as a knowledge democratization model

This paper presents the conceptualization and use of a virtual classroom in the course EIF-200 Fundamentos de Informática, first course in the Information Systems Engineering career of the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica. The virtual classroom is seen as a complement to the class and is conceived as a space that allows to centralize teaching resources, thereby promoting the  democratization of knowledge among students and teachers. Furthermore, this concept of virtual classroom helps to reduce the culture of individualism, present many times in university teaching practices, and contributes to create new opportunities to learn from other colleagues within a culture of reflection, analysis and respectful dialogue aimed to improve the teaching practices.

El Expurgo de Materiales Bibliográficos en las Bibliotecas Universitarias

Las Bibliotecas Universitarias, adquieren cantidades importantes de información contenida en libros, monografías, revistas, videos, etc.; por lo que acumulan un considerable acervo de materiales bibliográficos, audiovisuales y especiales de gran valor y riqueza; sin embargo, es necesario expurgar sus acervos bibliográficos con el fin de poseer una colección depurada, balanceada y consecuente con las necesidades de información que manifiestan sus usuarios.

Quality of life, sense of coherence and levels of sedentarism of faculty and staff from the Presbítero Benjamín Núnez, U.N.A.

The aim of this study was to analyze the quality of life of faculty and staff of the Presbítero Benjamín Núñez Campus of Universidad Nacional (UNA, Costa Rica) as well as to assess the influence of two factors, sense of coherence and physical exercise, in the quality of life of the subjects.  A group of 37 faculty members and 30 staff members participated in the study.  The SF-36 Questionnaire, the Sense of Coherence Scale, and a survey to measure physical exercise habits were used.  In general, results showed a relatively good quality of life and similar scores were found in the Sense of Coherence Scale.  Additionally, significant connections were found between certain factors related to sense of coherence and quality of life.  Data confirmed that persons who practice physical exercise have a better quality of life than those who are not physically active.  It was concluded that, although quality of life and sense of coherence were relatively good, new proposals must be designed and implemented to improve both aspects.  In this sense, physical exercise proved to be one of the pillars in the development of innovative proposals aimed at bettering health in university employees, all of this within the “Healthy Universities” concept.

Perfil del docente en el enfoque basado en competencias

Pero este enfoque requiere de un largo proceso de reformas, lo que implica, necesariamente, la transformación de los actores educativos: docentes y estudiantes. Ya que grupo de docentes constituye uno de los pilares de la educación basada en competencias, en este artículo se presentan las necesarias características o perfiles de docentes universitarios para abordar este enfoque.

El idioma inglés en el currículo universitario: importancia, retos y alcances

Una reflexión necesaria: posibilidad de la construcción de un modelo pedagógico en la educación superior

The current article presents a series of considerations regarding the significance of establishing a pedagogic model in University level education, as well as its main characteristics, this with the purpose of guiding educational processes towards new and critical perspectives. The article is based on the results of an investigation performed by a team of professionals at the Universidad Nacional.
