Diagnosis of Student’s Attitudes towards Mathematics in the First Year of Three Graduate Programs in Business Administration

The objective of this research was to determine the student’s attitudes towards Mathematics at the beginning of their graduate studies in Business Administration. The study used an exploratory, non-experimental, cross-sectional design. The instrument used was a questionnaire based on willingness, confidence, utility, motivation and anxiety with Likert questions. The study concluded that students have a negative attitude towards Mathematics; it is considered as a useful but difficult discipline and, for that reason, students show anxiety and lack of confidence when applying mathematical procedures.

Diversas investigaciones han señalado la relación de inequidad que hombres y mujeres poseen respecto a las matemáticas y la responsabilidad que el profesorado tiene en su construcción. Por tal motivo se plantea la necesidad de llevar a cabo acciones concretas que permitan la construcción de relaciones de equidad en dicha disciplina, basadas en los principios de respeto, solidaridad y ayuda mutua entre los géneros.

ACTITUDES HACIA LA ACUACULTURA EN ALGUNAS COMUNIDADES DEL GOLFO DE NICOYA, COSTA RICA

General attitudes toward aquaculture and specifically their interest in and the capture of mullet (Migil spp) was the determined by interviewing 154 artisanal fishermen and 29 salt-evaporation pond owners along the eastern shore of the Gulf of Nicoya. The majority of the fishermen, who likely are already overexploiting the fishery resource of the gulf, knew nothing about aquaculture. Nevertheless, they indicated that agriculture (which includes aquaculture) would be an alternative economic activity in the event that they couldn’t continue fishing. Although mullet is not highly valued on the market, it is very common and utilized by this social group. During winter (rainy season) the salt-evaporation ponds are not utilized and their owners expressed interest in cultivating mullet and shrimp during that season. Aquaculture could help solve the overexploitation problems in the traditional fishery, the overproduction of salt and the underutilization of the salt=evaporation ponds during the rainy season.
