Dyslipidemia and blood lipid levels in patients tratied in primary care centers in east SAN JOSE

Dyslipidemia, i.e. high levels of blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), is strongly related to cardiovascular disease (CVD). In order to reduce the risk of CVD at any moment in a person ́s life, it is crucial to know his/her –and the population’s– lipid profile. The aim of this study was to assess the (statistical) indicators of blood lipids and the prevalence of dyslipidemia in patients treated in the Integral Health Attention Program from Universidad de Costa Rica. A descriptive study was conducted including 10,044 patients aged 20 to 65 years, who were tested for a blood lipid profile in 2006. A total of 2,969 (29.6%) male and 7,075 (70.4%) female patients took part in the study, with an average age of 43.5 years. General averages for blood lipids were: 203.3 mg/dl for total cholesterol, 50.1 mg/dl for HDL, 120.1 mg/dl for LDL, and 165.6 mg/dl for triglycerides. Prevalence of 17.2% was determined for hypercholesterolemia (≥240 mg/dl), as well as 21.3% for low HDL levels (<40 mg/dl), 11.9% for high LDL levels (≥160 mg/dl), and 26.3% for high triglyceride levels (≥200 mg/dl). Women showed higher overall levels of dyslipidemia than men. Based on health areas, no significant differences were found in general lipid levels by age or sex. Results indicate that the general prevalence of dyslipidemia is close to half the rate reported in worldwide literature and lower than results reported in Costa Rican studies. However, general averages exceeded optimal levels for each blood lipid; consequently, it is important to develop health interventions oriented to reduce the impact of dyslipidemia in the studied population.

EXPERIENCIA MUNICIPAL EN EL USO E IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE UN SISTEMA DE INFORMACIÓN TERRITORIAL

En el Área Metropolitana de San José (AMSJ), 14 Municipalidades se esfuerzan por realizar mejoras sustanciales en la administración de los territorios, la gestión de cobro de impuestos y servicios y el desarrollo de planes de Ordenamiento Territorial Local (Planes Reguladores). Dentro de este ámbito,  la  implementación de un Sistema de Información Territorial (SIT), cobra especial relevancia, por lo que la Municipalidad de Escazú, ha desarrollado proyectos que le han permitido contestar preguntas cruciales en torno de la implementación de un SIT, entre ellas, ¿Por qué se necesita un SIT en la Municipalidad?, ¿Cómo implementarlo?, ¿Se debe ajustar el SIT a la Municipalidad o esta última debe ajustarse al SIT?, ¿Cuánto cuesta y cuánto se tarda para tener un SIT?. El proceso no ha sido fácil, y probablemente el camino para implementar con éxito un SIT no sea único o idéntico para todas las organizaciones, sin embargo, todo aquello que haya sido utilizado y probado puede ser de utilidad para otros.Palabras clave: Gestión municipal, Sistema de  Información Territorial, Sistema de  información Geográfca, Sistema de Información Catastral, Planifcación urbana, Formulación de proyectos.Abstract At Área Metropolitana de San José (AMSJ), 14 municipalities are making efforts to improve their systems for taxes collection and Urban Land Planning in order to achieve sustainable development of their territories. At this stage, implementation of a Geographical Information System (GIS) or Territorial Information System (SIT, in Spanish) takes on special relevance. The city of Escazú has developed projects that have allowed it in turn to answer crucial questions concerning implementation of a SIT, such as: Why is it necessary for a municipality to have a SIT? How does it work? Does the organization have to adjust to the SIT or should the SIT be adjusted to the needs of the organization? Finally, how much does it cost to implement a SIT and how long will it take? The process has not been easy, and probably the way to implement a successful SIT is not the same for every municipality. Nevertheless, the experiences of one municipality can be useful for others seeking to implement such a system. ACTIVIDAD SISMICA DE CARACTER SUPERFICIAL REGISTRADA POR LA RED SISMOGRÁFICA DEL OVSICORI-UNA EN LA HOJA DE SAN JOSE 1:200.000 ENTRE ABRIL 1984 - JULIO 1988

Este trabajo es el resultado del análisis de la información existente, registrada por el OVSICORI-UNA para la región del Valle Central de Costa Rica (Hoja San José, escala 1:200.000).  Históricamente el Valle Central ha sufrido por la acción de varios terremotos.  Entre los más dañinos podemos citar el de Cartago de 1841, el de Fraijanes de 1888, el de Cartago de 1910, el de Sarchí de 1912, el de Patillos de 1952 y el de los del Bajos del Toro en 1955.  Esta actividad asociada a fallas de carácter superficial (z 15 km) y con magnitudes moderadas mb 6.5, muy probablemente se volverá a presentar en el futuro, en igual forma en que se han visto afectada la ciudad de San Salvador en la hermana república de El Salvador.  Es, por lo tanto, de vital importancia investigar conocer y evaluar la existencia de las fallas que han ocasionado dichos terremotos.
